Appearance: deep black in color with a thick 2"+ head that looked like a dollop of chocolate mousse, very frothy and creamy looking.

Smell: some mild roasted malts and chocolate were noticeable, but somewhat light from what I expected.

Taste: this is a meal in a glass. Thick roasted malts, chocolate, molasses, hint of vanilla, alcohol, strong bitterness, and a very soft hint of bourbon. Well balanced.

Mouthfeel: heavy in body. Smooth at the start, almost syrupy at the finish. Aftertaste is long on the roasted malts, chocolate, and alcohol.

Drinkability: Definitely good, but can' t give it a higher score with the noticeable alcohol levels. A must try if you enjoy the regular Yeti.

650 mL bottle poured into a Kuhnhenn snifter. Bottled 10/7/2011.

Appearance - Pours with a big mocha head. Settles to just a collar, but a nice one. Just a couple of flecks of lace.

Smell - Oak and lots of black patent malt. Slightly grassy nose to it. Very chocolatey.

Taste - Oak immediately present again, but dies down to a more standard Yeti flavor. Still very green, almost grassy. Chocolatey and bitter. A variety of bitternesses. Oak bitterness, hop bitterness, and malt bitterness.

Mouthfeel - Abrasive bitterness, but nice body. Medium carbonation.

Overall - All these Yeti beers have the same grassy bitterness that I don't welcome in a stout. I get that it's an RIS, but it's over the top. The oakiness doesn't smooth it out at all, just adds to it.

Pours with a frothy, quite large, creamy dark brown head, that jumps out of my glass after forming a 4 inch thick head. The beer is a pitch black color that allows no light to come through. The aroma is interesting, there is a note that is a interesting mix of wood and roasted malts. I get notes of rich espresso, chocolate, vanilla, and an actual woody note. The taste is sweet up front with a subtle yet rich vanilla note that moves to a soft creamy note of rich chocolate. This beer is so creamy and smooth in the mouth, it is very reminiscent of a chocolate shake. Wow I am quite impressed here, this beer is quite a bit more interesting and flavorful than the regular version, which was perhaps a tad too bit simplistic. The oak adds a whole other dimension here that really brings this beer to a new level. As the beer warms up the oak starts to kick in a bit more, the finish becomes a bit more astringent with a solid tannic note. I am definitely enjoying this beer, especially since I was not expecting much from another oak aged brew.

I'm in for the long haul with a 22 ounce bottle. At $13.99, I better be. On to the beer:

Pop the top, pour into an Imperial Pint glass..oh damn! I spilled some beer on the floor. Hey, what's that I'm smelling? Wow, that's a lot of oak. That espresso colored head on top isn't dropping anytime soon, and that black as midnight body intiminates. The nose is clogged with oak and it's unintended consequences of licorice and sharp fruity esters. Faint hoppiness exists underneath it all.

I embrace for an oak smackdown in my mouth, and that is what I end up getting. It's just a bit overpowering IMO, and you can't really taste much of the beer itself. All those cocoa and hops play second fiddling to the oak. Strong oak, licorice, and vanilla flavors. The alcohol is spicy and perceived, but not beating on the palate.

That was fun to try. At its pricetag in my area, I won't be doing this again for awhile, but it's worth trying out for those who are interested in a full-flavored oak aged beer.

Another brew I had at the brewery. When asked what kind of oak was used, I was told it is a secret. Can't be a big oak as the vanilla and oak flavors were weak.
I love the Yeti, but this one is not better. A solid beer, had the coffee and cocao of the Yeti, but the vanillaness took away their strengths without adding sufficiently of its own. Nice brew, but cannot top, or parellel the Yeti.

After the last disappointment of a beer found its way to feeding the bacteria in my septic system I needed something to get that taste out of my mouth. I've had this beer several times in the past and I was kind of surprised I hadn't reviewed it yet.

Pours a solid black hole of color with a smallish coffee head that slowly dissipates and sticks much lace. Smells of coffee, chocolate, roast, licorice, vanilla, oak, smoke, earthy hops, a hint of ethanol. Now this is more like it. Taste is roasted grains, bitter dark chocolate, creamy espresso, licorice smoke, earthy herbal hop flavor, a bit of vanillin. There's a lot going on here, and its all good. Finishes with a long lingering mocha, alcohol, and hop bite. Medium to thick body with a light level of carbonation and a smooth oily/creamy mouthfeel. This is a great stout, one that I really should indulge with more often.

Poured from a bomber into an oversized red wine glass.

Pitch black body with a dark tan head and matching lacing. The aroma is rich with clean, fresh oak and sweet chocolate and roasted grains. The flavor is a nice mix of black grains, espresso, unsweetened cocoa with a tinge of citrus rind from the hops. I also really like how the bitterness just slightly overmatches the malt here. Makes for, as usual, a great combination with the dry, heavily roasted malts. A top notch imperial stout, fairly drinkable for it's size and tasty to the end.

22 oz. bomber, bought at LoneHill Liquors in Glendora, CA,

A: Pours an opaque black, with a very thick, tan head, which is fluffy and voluminous at first, but slowly retreats to about a centimeter of tan foam throughout the drinking experience. Widespread lacing is thick and abundant.

S: Very complex, vanilla, oak, hardwood, coffee, chocolate, and a hint of smoke and cherry. Hops are very light in the smell as compared to the other scents, but they give a slight floral character.

T: Magnificent, this is probably the best tasting stout I have ever had. Had my first bottle back in December of 2006, and it is just as good as I remembered. A thick chocolate and coffee flavour hits you when you first take a sip of the beer, the oak aging is evident, as a sweet note of vanilla and wood comes along for the ride. Even at 75 IBUs, the hops are not really evident until the beer warms to room temperature, where they give off a nice, pine resin flavour. Overall, a very haunting, but soothing and poetic flavour.

M: Thick and smooth, hearty, robust, a bit resiny as well, definitely a mouth-coating big beer.

D: An amazing feat in the annuls of craft brewing, one of the best beers, period, made in America. The only downside is that I have to drive to Glendora or Walnut to get it and can't get it locally, but I guess that makes each experience that much more special. A truly fantastic brew, every stout lover should pick this up.

A. Pours a jet black from a bomber into 2 pint glasses. A nice dark tan head forms.

S. Hops, Alcohol, hints of roasted coffee.

T. Roasted malt accented by vanilla. The oak character is very present in this beer. Notes of chocolate and a lingering bitter alcohol finish.

M. Creamy on the tongue, smooth overall feel. Full bodied.

D. I'd call this a session beer, but you probably wouldn't.

Poured from a bomber, this beer pours like friggin motor oil. Great cascade, with a very chocolatey looking head that is thick and dense in texture. Aromas of chocolate, oak, coffee, and heavy malt...smells like it is directed right at my sweet tooth. The beer is a very intricate blend of sweetness, including chocolate and molasses, with bitter coffee and oak essences. The flavors are extremely well balanced, and ride in on a smooth, creamy, and boozey body. This beer leaves a chocolatey lacing all over your glass, and the same consistency of the head that lingers all the while you are drinking. The aftertaste is a bit booze and a bit dark chocolate and all delicious. The finish lingers a bit, but mostly booze flavors after a while. Very tasty, and intoxicating at the same time. This is a great dessert beer, or winter warmer. Or, you know, for whatever reason you want to come up with...worth drinking...over and over and over...

I really wanted to like this beer, but I think it is seriously overoaked and what is normally a very nice stout has become a mess. Pours black with a thick tan head. Smell is roasty, sour, and with hints of vanilla. Both the sourness and vanilla come in large part from the wood. The taste is all wrong. There are roasty notes, malt, and chocolate struggling to make themselves known, but they are obliterated by the heavy oak flavors. It tastes like there is a shot of anejo tequila in this beer. Heavy vanilla, wood sourness, and cherry flavors from the wood as well as a woody aftertaste make this less than enjoyable for me. Give me the non oak-aged Yeti any day over this. The mouthfeel is nice and creamy, but still there is that tannic wood in the background cutting against it. Not very drinkable at all, like a beautiful cabernet that someone has oaked all to hell. More restraint on the wood would have added subtle touches of wood and vanilla sweetness and would have been welcome. I'll try another batch in the future and see how it goes.

Very dark in pour, almost black. With a hint of bourbon/oak in aroma. Chocolate to mocha head color. A bit of dark fruit in flavor with oak, also some chocolate and mocha notes. If you like Great Divide's Yeti Imperial Stout you should really try this beer.

22-Oz bomber with no bottling date on it.

Pours a jet-black beer with a tall and thick BROWN head that dies down only grudgingly. The doesn't let go easy either it densely sticks to the walls of the glass. A word of warning, the head on this can get out of hand; take it easy or it will overflow the glass.

Smell is strong chocolate aroma that reminds me a lot of Kahlua. Spicy alcohol scent carries more chocolate scents and a good whiff of hops. Additional scents of butter, rum, burnt sugar, and isley scotch with a touch of smoky peat. Earthy scents of wood and sage round out the scent of this most impressive looking stout.

Taste is creamy and chocolately from the start with a bit of black coffee and oak in the first taste. The flavor is a little sweet but not in a bad way and there is a slight acid edge here from the dark malts. There is a strong zip of hops in the flavor that is mostly herbal in flavor and gives this a slight "carrot" after taste once the chocolate and coffee flavors die down.

Mouthfeel is milkshake thick; equal to the best I have ever tasted.

The only possible defect to drinkability is the alcohol content. In all other respects I want unlimited refills of this, but all I have is the one bottle. I do have a second bottle I was saving for a BIF, would be a shame if that got "accidentally" drank and replaced with a Stone RIS!

A: poured a dark as night black in color with a thin brown head and left a little lacing sticking to the glass.

S: intresting that the hop character is pretty noticeable with roastiness, chocolate malts, slight oat grains, and some underlying booze notes. I really didn't detect any oak at all.

T: on the taste I did get roasty smoke flavor alongside chocolate, slight oat grains, bready malts, and maybe a touch of wood but not barrel aged character more like wood chips in the fermenter.

M: the brew was full in body with a low amount of carbonation which had a sweet, roasty, smoky, boozy, and slight creamy finish,

D: it drank pretty good but the oak character was not as potent as I thought it would be. The barrel aging process seemed like it didn't make a difference. Like I said it was probably dry hopped with wood chips; still pretty tasty.

Appears a midnight black with a 4 finger tan head floating atop the brew. Plenty of scattered chunks of lacing are left all over the glass.
Smell is of fruity blended chocolate bars, toasted nuts, roasted coffee, vanilla, and solid American Oak tannins.
Taste is of the same aromas with an addictive amount of flavors swirling and bouncing along the tongue and saturating the palate. There is a moderate amount of hops that I can pick up as the last bit of the sip enters my mouth. Really good stuff.
Mouthfeel is full bodied, smooth, complex of oak, fruit, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, and perhaps a hint of caramel buried in this warming brew.
This one is a sipper but an outstanding night-cap, or after dinner brew.

You can tame a Yeti. I've been doing so in my cellar. I recommend you do the same.

Rigid and adamantly black, the beer is relentless even when held directly into the afternoon sunlight. It is obstinately opaque, allowing no room for radiance or highlighting. A mocha tan line distinguishes its trim where ebony coloured bubbles are worn as a necklace. The splatter of lacing is clingy and hugging. It drapes the beer tenaciously and coats the glass with a dark wax-like paste. It's an exceptional looking stout by all standards.

I might define 'perfection' as the aroma of Oak Aged Yeti. It is a heavy nose-full of oak bark and cedar dust, bitter dark chocolate cocoa solids, flat heavy-roast espresso, vanilla bean late, scorched caramel, and above all else, juicy green sappy bulbous hop cones. It's not overly complex but it is tremendously profound. This combination of oak bark and cedar dust, cocoa, espresso, and hops is beyond luscious. This is stout in all its capable glory.

Oak Aged Yeti is not actually aged in oak - it is aged with oak in it. I won't say that one method is better than the other, however, they do yield entirely different results. Because OAY is aged on French and toasted oak chips it doesn't take on all the complexities and nuances that a true barrel-aged beer would. That said, it does just fine without them. The flavour is brimming with pine-dipped, citrus scented hops as well as rich, dark chocolate, dry balsam wood, and heavy-roast espresso - it's about as decadent as they come.

Although 75 IBU's is about perfect for a beer like this, I found the bitterness to be too abrupt when consumed young. The fresh, plentiful nature of the hops would cut the oaky-chocolaty-bitter espresso linger and create a very brut finish. Young, it has little resonance or grace. Aged - it persists. It crawls every inch of the tongue and saunters all parts of the palate. It is savory and can endure even the darkest of chocolate pairings.

I wasn't overly impressed with OAY my first time around. I remember remarking on how plentiful and dominant the hops were; the fresh pine character was too overpowering. Although I'm not opposed to tasting hops in my stouts, I generally like them to be more roasted and chocolaty. But with time the hops do mellow (although never fade) and flavours amalgamate to a succulent orchestration of espresso, vanilla bean, chocolate, and pine.

Contrary to what others have said, I find Oak Aged Yeti to mature exceptionally well. In fact, I vastly prefer it that way and it is one beer I always ensure to have stocked in my cellar. Over four years ago I splurged for a case of it and that has proven to be the best beer investment I've made. I love many stouts but given the dreaded thought of having to chose a choice few, Oak Aged Yeti would undoubtedly be at the top of that list.

Poured in to brandy snifter

A - Dark brown/black colour with half a finger of espresso coloured head.

S - Stronger smell then the Yeti. Bitter hops up front with coffee and a oak smell in the background.

T - Very sweet up front: caramel & molasses with some bitter hops. Roasted coffee and some chocolate in the malts with a slight bourbon taste in the background.

M - medium to heavy body. Lightly carbonated.

D - A nice smooth RIS with some character.

A - Pours a black in color, some carbonation, nice foamy tan head which disappears quickly, not much lacing afterwards.

S - Scents of hops, malts, chocolate/toffee, and alcohol.

T - The taste is of roasted/smoked hops/malts, slight vanilla, chocolaty, with a nice warm feeling in the palate.

M - Medium body, a complex brew.

D - Very drinkable. A very nice Oaked Aged (my first) from GD.

Tried side-by-side with the non-oak-aged version. Both purchased at K&L Wine Merchants in Redwood City, CA, and brought back to Australia to sample with @tobeerornottobe and @LaitueGonflable.

This one pours exactly the same colour as the original, but with a looser head with larger bubbles. Same colour of lovely light brown with some supple sudsy lacing. Looks very heavy in the glass. Very pleasant with a surprisingly light body. Looks good.

Dark and sweet on the nose, but with undeniable belts of leavened organic characters, perhaps banana skin and crushed leaves. This is particularly noticeable when put side by side with the original. I don't get a lot of oak, but there's obviously something inoculated in the oak which lends the organics to this one. Still very pleasant and robust, however.

Taste here is very subtle and smooth. The oak age really mellows the palate beautifully, still leaving big chocolatey and roasted grain characters, but sweeping them with a round coconut and vanilla character that is more fused than in the original, but less pronounced. It integrates more with the other characters, and makes the palate smoother, but doesn't distinguish itself quite so much.

Feel is smooth and lovely. Still, I'm more enamoured of the original, weirdly.

A very good beer, and a very drinkable Impy Stout. Indeed, the lovely melding truly improves the drinkability on this one. Overall though, I think it skews the beer off a little, and to be honest, I prefer the original Yeti, which was a fantastic brew.

Had this on tap at Max's the other night.

The beer pours a very dark black color with good heard retention and lacing. There is lots of sweet malt and coffee on the nose, but that's about it. Smells big, sweet and powerful. On the palate the beer is soft and creamy, but with noticeable hoppy bitterness on the finish. Flavors consist of coffee, chocolate milkshake, vanilla and a hint of cherry cough drop. Abv. is very well disguised for such a big beer, and the beer has a long, soft, creamy finish. Excellent RIS, though it's hard to imagine sitting down to more then one 12 oz. glass of this stuff.

- Tasted at Split Thy Skull 2011 at Mugs Alehouse -

A - Tar black. Deep chocolate colored head.

S - Molasses. Smooth vanilla. Brown sugar on warm bread.

T - Toast, caramel, and cameo of booze. Oak. Nice barley notes. Some woody bitterness on the backend.

M - Medium body, great smoothness. Nice residual bitterness.

Poured a deep, thick black with brownish hints. Had some nice carbonation, deep brown head. Nose was roasted malts and that mmm mmm mmm oak smell. Taste started out like a stout with that deep oak all the way through then the vanilla comes out. Great indeed. This thing is a masterpiece. I dont know how long it was in the oak but it tasted like years and years. It was so deep.

Pours a one-finger brown head that fades very slowly, leaving a good lace. Black color, no highlights. Light-medium carbonation and heavy bodied. Nose is chocolate and coffee. Starts sweet coffee and chocolate, smooth bakers chocolate finish. Expensive - $11.95 for a 22 oz bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma.

A-This beer pours an inky black body with a nice size dark brown head with a faint reddish hint. The tiny bubble of carbonation roll up the sides of the glass.

S- As soon as I started pouring I could smell the wonderful dark malts. The slight sweetness of caramel, molasses and dark brown sugar are combined with a slight smoky, oak hint and a faint hop note. It has a soft hint of leather way in the background. As it warms some notes of vanilla and prunes start to show up.

T- The dark malt that is deep roasted and some roasted black grain have very soft flavors to them. It finishes with a nice hop spiciness. There is a nice bitterness to the malt that is mixed in with the hop finish, which gives it more depth.

M- This beer has a medium full mouthfeel with a slight slippery texture. There is no alcohol warmth and no astringency.

D- This a very smooth beer that has good complexity. The smells and flavors are dark but not harsh. It was a bit on the sweet side but had hops to blend with the dark malts.

Review from 5/2010 notes. Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours black with a small, fine brown head and lacing. Aroma of oak, toasted malt and chocolate. Oak woody up front with dark toasted and caramel malts and caramel, a hint of smokiness. Woody, chocolaty, malty finish. Nice heavy bodied, thick and creamy. Excellent!
