Pours a reddish brown, looks like it should. Opaque, a thin brown head. Not a lot of retention, but leaves some sticky on the glass and a light colored ring around the perimeter.
Might be the best smelling barley wine I've hard. The resinous, piney, hoppy scent is there, but this time the fruit isn't citrus, but something much sweeter...some kind of berry.
The malt backbone is there, as it the overwhelming hoppy flavor, but surprisingly, it all starts with a sweet, fruitness.
It's sweet for a split second and then the bomb explodes bringing bitter and alcohol to the equation. It's tolerable for a barley wine, and quite pleasant.
While hard to drink in general, it's a gentle barley wine. The sweetness from the red fruit and the malt tempers the bitterness. Still hard to chug, but relatively easy to drink for the style.
