Picked this up recently at the new Bottle King on the Livingston Circle, having never had this beer before. I enjoyed the Yet and the Oak Aged Yeti and also noticed that this was rated highly. While not a bad beer, this had a bit too much going on to fully sit back and enjoy and the ashen, woody notes nearly overtook everything else when it came to the flavor of this. I love Stouts as dessert beers but this needed a big glass of water to wash it down once I had finished this off.

The pour to this was great, as this beer had a nice, rich dark brown hue and solid tan head that was present but not overly thick. Lots of brown lacing was present down the side of my glass as I worked my way through this as well. The aroma wasn't that strong but there was enough bitter chocolate and espresso in it to live up to this beer's potential. Both of those were present in the taste but that, as well as the vanilla and roasted malt were inundated by the woody mouthfeel to this. Had this been a bit creamier and lighter on the booze, I would have mistaken this for an Irish Dry Stout. There was a bit of whiskey in the aftertaste and this did feel a bit too strong at times, because the flavors weren't long-lasting enough to compensate for the strength of the alcohol.

This wasn't like a Russian Imperial Stout when it came to the ABV but I would have preferred this to be just a hair weaker. It felt quite roasted and the espresso didn't thin this beer out enough to make it feel completely true to form. While not a bad choice, this wasn't an improvement over the other Yeti's that Great Divide offered and after a while, I got the impression that variations on a theme are only worth it if they augment the original in some way. Coffee and caffeine addicts may get something out of this but for me, this was only worth a go one time around. Just a bit too generic for some that came across as being different from the pack. (1,927 characters)

This beer is absolutely amazing. Every variant of yeti I have had has been perfect. This would have gotten a solid 5 if the smell was a bit stronger. (149 characters)

Poured into a Duvel snifter glass.

A - 5 - Couldn't ask for a more ideal appearance as far as stouts go. Extreme dark, burnt caramel colored head, as dark as they come. Pitch black, oily colored beer. Extremely impressive head potential and retention, especially when considering the high ABV. Really impressive, solid walls of lacing left behind on the glass. Very thick, dense and creamy head.
S - 4.75 - Tons of black, rustic coffee grounds, almost to a smokey level, very roasty. Vanilla bean, tons of malt, light touches of dark chocolate and an extremely distant, red pepper spiciness. The espresso is the center stage focal point here.
T - 4.5 - Medium sweet espresso, chocolate and malt upfront, fades into vanilla bean and a light almond nutiness, marzipan perhaps. Ends on a decently bitter, black coffee bean note. Excellent.
F - 4.5 - Nice medium/full creamy and thick body and mouthfeel.
O - 4.5 - Really awesome imperial stout. Definitely focused on the coffee, but not to a palate tiring extent. Would make a fine breakfast food pairing brew, but also works great as a warming, slow sipper. I tried this beer fresh since it is easily obtainable locally for, to determine if I want to buy another to let age. Yes! Definitely buy a second one to let age, has a decently noticeable hop profile that will surely fade with age and make the malt much more deep and robust. Highly recommend to fans of the style! (1,421 characters)

Great to finally get my hands on this brew I have wanted to try it for a long time.Poured into a imperial nonic a jet black with a tight formed creamy dark mocha colored head.A mix of dark fruit and vanilla tinged rum stand out most in the nose,the espresso beans show up in a passing lingering note.Wow full rich,thick mouthcoating mouthfeel,it glides down easy and is very lush....perfection in my mind.Big complex flavors,a mix of vanilla-like rum and dark fruit with that espresso roast and bitter chocolate rounding out the finish,there is a hint of char and wood after it warms a little as well.Hell yeah this is where its at,just kick ass. (646 characters)

Appearance - This poured out like the proverbial engine oil. It was thick and black with an oily texture. The head was absolutely gorgeous. You have to work the pour a little bit to round it up, but it is a very dark brown, stubbornly uneven, and left some nice lacing on the inside of my glass.

Smell - The espresso is roasted all to hell so this doesn't smell like a normal espresso-based coffee drink like you'd get at Starbucks. The oak too is very strong and full of sweet, alcohol-infused vanilla. The chocolate is dark as it needs to be hanging around with this crowd. Overall this is a very rich, powerful, potent, almost boozy nose and my only criticism is that it's on the verge of starting not to smell like a beer.

Taste - This almost becomes a sweet coffee drink at the taste. The heavy roasting keeps the sugars in check so there's still some big bitterness, but again it is moving away from the idea of being a beer.

Mouthfeel - This is full-bodied, sweet in the cheeks but balanced with a huge burnt bitterness, and almost flat as it should be.

Drinkability - I don't think I've ever had a beer that would go better with a cigar than this one. Having said that, it was a little too artificial to stand as one of my all-time favorite but a great beer nevertheless. (1,283 characters)

22 oz. bottle served in a tulip at The Birch, Norfolk, VA, $18. Beautiful dark creamy head, excellent retention. Nose reminded me of 409, which is probably just the oak barrel taking over the brew. A hint of vanilla does come through after you wade through the oak (almost peppery). There are some roasted chocolate notes, and the espresso is defintely in the flavor profile too. Good mouthfeel, typical of imperials.

As another reviewer stated, there is just too much going on in this beer. They should either eliminate the oak aging or the espresso, so you can enjoy the ingredients. A bit pricey, but they have something they can tweak in future batches. (659 characters)

Bottled in 2009. Pours dark as hell and thick as hell. Surprisingly good amount of foam for a three year old imperial stout. The head is beautiful - dark tan leather, huge and foamy. The nose is full of intense bouts of chocolate, coffee, and roasted malts. Upon taking a sip, the bittersweet cocoa hits you right away. A slight punch of bitterness on the back of the tongue with a nice sweetness that takes it over halfway through. Warmth brings out the deep coffee flavor in the brew, which is very dominant on the palate once it's picked up. Throughout the brew, you're battling back and forth between chocolate and coffee, trying to decide which one is more prominent. Sometimes you get a sip that reminds you of a dark roasted Columbian coffee, other times you'd swear you were drinking a liquid Godiva bar. Some sweetness at the end, which almost is reminiscent of figs or anise - very, very faint, however. The body is extremely rich, creamy, and chewy with a low level of carbonation.

This stout is simply delicious. It has two main flavors which battle for your tastebuds throughout the whole experience - coffee and chocolate - and it's quite amazing. Very rich and definitely something you'll want to sip, however one of the best stouts I've had. (1,258 characters)

The color is black. That is if black were mostly black with a brown twinge . . . Completely opaque with a beautiful brown head. The nose is of very bitter dark chocolate, coupled with a wonderful aroma of medium roasted, coarsely ground coffee beans . . . Wow!

The beer smells so good that I have to dive in immediately! Pummels the palate with liquefied chocolate . . . Fudge, molasses, vanilla, and mocha. Oak tannin present. This beer is ridiculous. By the time you are getting a grip on the malt, which pleasantly assaults your palate, the hops are beginning to replace the sweetness of the malt with intense green bitterness that intensifies as the beer finishes. The beer finishes for minutes . . . All the while, keeping all of the previously mentioned flavors present, and somehow getting more bitter.

This beer starts off very dark and finishes with a lot of hop greenness. At this exact moment, this is one of the most complete, complex, beers that I have ever enjoyed . . . Luxurious! The beautiful coffee aroma and flavor serves as a reminder that this beer is caffeinated. Oh yes, as I discovered, this beer will perk you right up! (1,148 characters)

Bottled April 2nd 2010

A: Poured from a 650ml bottle into a snifter. The beer looks absolutely gorgeous. Dark black with a 1 and a half inch tan head that quickly dissipates into a nice a ring. A lot of lacing.

S: I didn't get a whole lot of espresso on the nose which was mildly disappointing. The dominant characteristic is definitely oak, followed by a hint of vanilla and coffee. You really have to try hard to get anything beyond the oak in this one.

T: Again, I was mildly disappointed. Perhaps the age on the beer diminishes its coffee qualities but all I get on the palate is oak followed by hints of roasted malts, vanilla, and coffee. The dominant characteristic is definitely the woodiness. While this is excellent and delightful at first, even when shared among two people the woodiness really starts to become overwhelming. A bit challenging to get through.

M: On par with other imperial stouts. Thick and chewy with some residual woodiness lingering.

O: Overall, this has not been my favorite imperial stout but it is definitely worth trying if you are looking to explore the world of wood aged beers. However, shy away from an aged version of this style if you are looking to get a dominant espresso quality. My only advice is that I would suggest sharing this beer with one or two other people, as the woodiness can become a bit sore on the palate as you make your way through. I do plan to return to this beer, perhaps as a tasting with the other Yeti's to showcase the versatility and uniqueness of the style. (1,535 characters)

Bottled, what looks like, March 09.

Looks like a Yeti, which is always fantastic. Midnight black and thick with a dark brown head. What else can you ask for?

Bitter chocolate aroma with roasty coffee, vanilla and wood, with a strong hoppy presence. Huge, as expected.

A bottle of this is like a meal, or at least a rich dessert that makes you feel like going to sleep. Your tongue is greeted with an assault of dark chocolate chips and coffee, the body is full, the alcohol warm, and the finish long and bitter. I think I liked it more fresh, maybe just an off moment. (571 characters)

Bottled 12/19/11. Enjoyed on National Stout Day.

Pours a dark brown or black color, with nice mocha colored head. Very thick consistency. Smells llike coffee and syrupy malt. It tastes the way it smells: strong coffee presence and malty sweetness. Delicious beer that goes down easy. (284 characters)
