Served from a 22 oz bottle into a Sam Adams glass.

A: wow. pours like motor oil into the glass. Visible viscosity. Opaque black, no hint of color. Head is a very dark tan and pours about 3 fingers thick, and quickly dissipates.

S: mix of french-roasted coffee, char, and dark chocolate. A little woody. Also some herbal hop aroma that complements the above nicely.

T: charred wood dominates but mixes in with coffee beans and a little background chocolate. Definitely an alcohol flavor, like a thick stout laced with a fine Scotch. These flavors dominate and there is a very slight hint of dark dried fruit but not really much. Some tanniny wood flavor in the later stages.. The finish puckers a bit with the dry alcohol, a very firm hop bitterness, and a substantial but not overwhelming oak flavor.

M: oily, chewy, and heavy. The alcohol definitely warms the mouth (and the belly). Somewhat puckering.

D: share with a friend if possible, and pair with a creamy dessert (even something as simple as vanilla ice cream) for a nice contrast. After a few sips I definitely can feel it. Would definitely serve this as a closer in a flight, and I will also seek out the other oak-aged Yeti variations. (1,201 characters)

A - A deep, rich black color with a very fine brown head that rose about two fingers. Great looking.

S - Nice oak, some espresso in there, but more milky cocoa than espresso in there. Nice smelling.

T - Very milky tasting. Nice bitter coffee taste and a lot of milk chocolae. Tiny bit of hops, and something sugary and sweet.

M - Milky, creamy, very smooth. I wish it had some more carbonated bite though.

D - Don't get any alcohol in this, so drinkable, but not a huge fan of it enough to seek it out. (506 characters)

A: darker brown head a finger high that doesn't go away on top of a black opaque body.

S: alcohol, espresso, dark chocolate, and a hint of sweetness.

T: straight espresso and dark chocolate and toffee up front. Creamy, slight sweet with some bitterness towards the end. Probably the best aspect of the beer. Lingering sweetness and bitterness.

M: surprisingly medium body. Thought it would be thicker. Lower carbonation, which would be okay with thicker mouthfeel. Slightly creamy finish.

D: with more carbonation and slightly lower alcohol it would be crazy drinkable. (574 characters)

March 2009 Bottle Date; Sampled May 2009
A solid, but not aggressive pour, sneaks up on me and fills my 25cl tulip glass with three fingers of foam as well as overflowing a bit. The head is a full brown hue that is as dark as I can remember seeing in a long time. The beer is pitch black in color, though it does pass a hint of light around the edges if I really hunt for it (the hue is amber leaning, though it is still pretty opaque). The aroma has a sharp, acrid espresso character to it that is quite noticeable from the get go. The beer is a bit cold so in the microwave it goes for 15 seconds to make it cool. The warming smoothes out the acrid notes a bit, but they still play the dominant role here. Some aromas that do become noticeable though are a charred, blueberry-like, fruitiness, some notes of charcoal, a touch of sweet dark malt, charred tobacco, a toasted brown malt / biscuit maltiness and a touch of chocolate at times. The aroma is a bit simplistic in its overwhelming charred (both espresso and malt) character, though it is not bad.

The beer feels smooth and creamy as it first hits my tongue; it is not overly thick and seems a bit light compared to some heavy Imperial Stouts. Dark chocolate flavors are noticed along with an up front sweetness. Chewy, toasted and burnt whole-grain flavors are here along with a bread / cracker like middle. The finish has a burnt, lingering, roasted bitterness to it; there is also a huge hop bitterness here though, but I don't notice the ample hop flavor presence that is in the regular Yeti. The flavor is somewhat acrid, with a touch of roast derived acidity, but it is quite a bit smoother than the aroma would have suggested. As the beer warms and my palate gets used to it, the beer picks up a lot more roasted fruitiness; notes of burnt prunes, figs and perhaps a touch of raisin are noticeable. It also picks up a touch of dark / roast grain burnt vegetal character at times in the finish, though this is pretty light. The fruit notes are accentuated by the hoppiness and the vegetal note is enhanced by the herbal hop notes. This has a nice, complex sweetness from the dark malt. Some spicy oak accentuates the acrid notes a bit as well as adding a touch of hotness to the finish. The oak is fairly muted overall though.

I definitely like the regular Yeti better as the espresso just makes this a bit too harsh. It is not a bad beer though and I find myself even enjoying it. (2,448 characters)

Bomber bottled on Feb 13th 2009...

Pours a very dark, almost black with a tan one finger head. I can see small red highlights if I hold it up to the light. Head is sticking around for the review. The smell is actually more boozy than expected. I thought this beer would mellow with a half a year age on it. I can definitely smell the oak and chocolate, but I'm struggling to find the espresso on the nose. A quick swirl of the glass only brings up the alcohol aroma. Definitely smells sweet and roasty once you get past the hot alcohol presence. As far as taste goes, it's a grand slam. You get a rush of sweet fruits and alcohol, but it is mellowed quickly by a very nice coffee and cocoa presence. It seems like the cocoa sticks to your tongue, making for a very nice mouthfeel, almost like the way a sugary hot cocoa leaves a residue of sticky chocolate on your tongue. Very nice. Wouldn't consider this one too drinkable, might be better with a little aging. I attempted to keep this one as long as I could, but it was calling my name. Not the first I've had, but the first I sat down to review. Very solid stout. (1,118 characters)

22oz. bomber into tulip glass on 4/15/09. Thanks to FooFaa for sharing!

A - Poured a black body with a burnt tan head that reduced to a thin veil and deposited some spotted lace around the glass.

S - Surprisingly muted nose for an espress oak-aged Imperial Stout! Subtle bourbon and woody notes with some vanilla sweetness and a hint of coffee. I was expecting a much more prominent aroma here.

T - Flavor is quite hoppy throughout with bitter coffee and a hefty roasted character, which then segues into a prevalent vanilla aspect that cools everything down just a notch or two and alleviates some of the bourbon's warmth. Some earthy hop notes and coffee bitterness/astringency appear in the finish. This is one hoppy mo-fo of a stout!

M - Full bodied with an oily texture and a touch of carbonation. Lingering metallic bitterness in the finish.

D - I can't believe what I'm about to say, but I actually found this to be a bit too hoppy and a bit off-kilter. I felt the espresso character wasn't pronounced enough. I was overall pleased with the roasty and bourbon qualities but this just didn't blow me away like I was expecting. With that said, this version of Yeti is still a fine brew. (1,199 characters)

Poured into a snifter from a bomber.

A Pours a dark brown that borders on black. It is topped with a very thick mocha head that has excellent retention.

S Lots of chocolate, some coffee, with a bit of a hoppy background. Smells amazing kind of sweet with some plant like presence.

T A very strong coffee and hop presence with a lot of bitterness that almost borders on too much.

M thick creamy mouthfeel.

Overall I think that this is the weakest of the Yetis so far. It looks nice, smells amazing, and feels nice but the overwhelming bitterness in the taste kills it. Still a very good beer though. (608 characters)

Thin head, opaque red-brown.

Rich malt, some cocoa and coffee nose.

Rich, pretty bitter from malt and even some leafy hops, even though this apparently expired last February. Bold flavor, and there's some oak and alcohol burn. Some leather and chocolate.

Standard mouthfeel.

This is pretty harsh, even with the age on it. Why would espresso need hopping so heavy? (367 characters)

This beer looked thick and dark as it sludges out of the bottle. I have had lots of dark beers in my day, but this might be the darkest. No light comes from anywhere. Really attractive thick bubbly dark mocha head that isn't going anywhere. Some of the head does die down, but it sticks really well to the sides of the glass. 

Smells fresh, a strong wood presence with some vanilla, bourbon, strong coffee and dark chocolate. A wonderful blend of all of these and I spent about five minutes just smelling it. 

I get hit with a wave of strong coffee at first, which turns into a slight sweetness from the oat and vanilla notes. Finishes hop strong. The bitterness from the combination of the coffee and hops is almost cloying. There is not alot of sweetness in this beer, and it makes it's drinkability a little difficult. Overall, a really good beer but I wish I had split the bottle with someone. I will be really interested to see how this beer hold up in my cellar. I think some time will bring out some more vanilla notes that might have been hidden behind the coffee and hops.  (1,087 characters)

Unfortunately, for me, this beer didn't do it. I am, for the record, I'm a huge fan of great divide beers. Always will be. maybe i got a bad bottle, maybe not. I have another that I will try later and edit if necessary. The color of this beer is awsome, the head is excellent. the taste is also excellent. However, I had coffee been "chunks" in my bottle. Not happy with this at all. This just shouldn't exist in a good beer . Sorry. (433 characters)

22 oz. bomber bottle with a recycled paper label and a tight gold foil over the cap. It's a basic label with the name of the beer in coffee grind colored letters and a small silhouette of the Yeti with a coffee mug in his hands. To the left is a description of the beer, another picture of the Yeti, and food pairings. To the right is all the mandatory US information and a stamped bottle on date at the bottom. My bottle was bottled on February 13, 2009 which happened to be one of the year's Friday the 13th.

Appearance: Because this was an Imperial Stout and since it was bottled on Friday the 13th, I had no other choice to pour this beer into my Maudite Snifter. Have you ever been to a coffee house before and ordered either an espresso or black coffee. Good! Take that pitch black color and up it 2 shades of black and you got the color of this beer. It's so black in color that if you hold up to the light, all you're going to see is a reflection of yourself in the glass. Light can and will not penetrate this beer's solid pitch black color. Sitting on top of this beer was a thick and creamy 1 1/2 inch dark mocha head of foam. This thick head of foam had some nice slow retention that left behind a thin mocha film and a hand full of tiny blots of lace around the glass. Solid black in color with a good head head of foam. Not much more you can ask for from a Coffee Imperial Stout appearance.

Smell: Great Divide wasn't joking around when they said this was an Espresso Aged Imperial Stout. Straight out of the barrel was the strong aroma of dark roasted espresso beans. Not only was there espresso beans, but I swear I smelled some coffee beans lurking behind the espresso beans. Following the coffee and espresso beans and equally as strong was the scent of dark roasted malts. After my nose got passed the malts, I was able to pick out some bitter dark chocolate, black cherry, a gentle touch of plum, charred oak, and a subtle whiff of vanilla toward the back. The beer had one of those aromas where you could stick your nose in it again and again and it will never get boring. A pleasure to smell!

Taste: This Imperial Stout was dark, thick, chewy, and roasted like the appearance and aroma. That would have been great if it didn't taste like the dark roasted malts and the bitter dark chocolate weren't jealous of the espresso and coffee beans. They didn't like they got top billeting so the chocolate and malts tied up the espresso and coffee and shoved them into a closet. The beans were able to see a little sunshine, but not as much as they saw in the aroma. Besides those 4 tastes, there was also the taste of charred oak, a touch of black cherry, and like the aroma, the taste finishes up with a hint of vanilla. Toward the bottom of the glass, the roasted coffee beans were able to escape the closet and show themselves to your taste buds. To me, it was a little too late.

Mouthfeel: This was a light bodied beer with a faint roasted aftertaste of malts and chocolate. if you believe that, then you're the one that believes that the Yeti owns a condo in Florida. This was a full bodied Imperial Stout with a low level of carbonation and a bitter and roasted aftertaste. It was bitter and roasted with dark roasted malts, dark chocolate, roasted espresso beans, roasted coffee beans, charred oak, and a speck of vanilla. This aftertaste will linger on for a few minutes and then it will decide to pack up it's espresso and coffee beans and leave.

Drinkability: If you like the regular and Oak Aged Yeti, then you should like this version of the Yeti. If you can't find this beer, grab an Oak Aged and add more chocolate and coffee to the mix and you got this beer. It was a good beer, but it was a little disappointing in the taste. Damn you chocolate and malts! It was fun to try, but I'd still rather have an Oak Aged Yeti. (3,854 characters)

A: pours a wonderfull inky, black color. Dark tan head. Lots of lacing.
S: Lots of sweet, boozy coffee odors. More boozy then coffee, but it is there, with hints of chocolate
T: The espresso shines through. Honestly, I was expecting A LOT more oak, but there are only slight hints (bottle is over a year old, oddly enough). Not that it is bad, but I was expecting more out of this beer. The oak is an aftertaste, with the espresso/coco flavor very much pushed to the front. Not complaining, just saying. Solid flavor profile, but nothing that blew my mind
M: Not overly heavy, but there is a nice weight behind it
D: All in all, higher then expected (649 characters)

Bottled 2/13.

Appearance - Pours jet black with a fluffy dark tan head. Rings of sticky lacing. Only slight negative is that the head is not very persistent.
Smell - Espresso and roasted malts.
Taste - Smooth chocolate, espresso, slight vanilla note, bitter finish.
Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied (was oddly thin at times and full at others), smooth
Drinkability - A sipper, but still relatively easy drinking. This is a rather rich beer though and one I recommend sharing. (469 characters)

On-tap at the Great Divide Tap Room.

A: Midnight black with a voluminous hot cocoa head. Head retention is decent, and patches of lace are left behind.

S: Smells like coffee being brewed in a pine forest, with the pine winning out. Hop aromas dominate with a heavy pine scent, but the coffee aromas do their best to keep up. Bakers chocolate is in the back doing its best to break through the other aromas.

T: The hops dominate, but the coffee gives them a run. After an initial hit of espresso and dark chocolate, bitterness bursts onto the scene with heavy pine and grapefruit flavors. Espresso flavors ride through the experience. Baking chocolate is there if you actively search for it. Finishes dry, with an odd citrus bitterness/coffee acidity combination.

M: Heavy body feels oily and slick. Carbonation is on the high side.

D: This brewery fresh sample really felt rough. Hops and coffee battled for dominance while leaving the other flavors behind. The acidity of the finish bothered me a bit. This beer is probably a worthy candidate for cellaring, simply to get things to smooth out. To be honest, the regular Oak Aged Yeti was a better fit for me. (1,164 characters)

A- jet black with a two finger mocha head. ample sticky lacing. looks pretty viscous.

S- tons of oak, booze, chocolate syrup, baking cocoa, and heaps of espresso. also, a surprisingly strong hop presence, piney and citric even.

T- real oaky, slight lactic/milky component too, caught me off guard. dark fruits and straight espresso grounds. as bitter and dry as any stout i've had. the bitter hops add a nice element as well. earthy, but finishes with a hint of sweetness.

M- very good for the style, creamy not as this as regular yeti.

O- definitely seek this out as the price is right and it's well above the average off-the-shelf stout. love what the coffee did to this one, but that's not to say that oak aged and regular yeti aren't great on their own. will be picking up a few bottles tomorrow, highly similar to BORIS. (830 characters)

Doin' it at Haven with my #1 bartender in Orange, CA.

...20 minutes later after having let this bad sucker properly warm up... Ok, and... aite, just aite. It's not "Starbucks bad," but it sure as hell ain't coffee from a civet bean. This sucker is more like your local hippie coffee shop; it definitely makes the cut, but is Raul trippin? Not at all.

The main man would love a thicker texture and more presence in the espresso department.

Pours jet black with about a .5in mocha head that slowly recedes. Nice retention and lacing. Good looking beer.

Smell is somewhat subtle given the style. Notes of chocolate, wood and sweet malt in the nose. Pleasant enough if not overly assertive.

Taste is notes of vanilla, oak, and chocolate. Only the slightest hints of coffee. A slight tart kick in the finish, which, as the glass warms, seems to start transfering to the front of each sip.

Mouthfeel is solid for the style. Maybe a bit thin given the flavors involved, but I can't fault it too much.

Overall, this kind of fails as a coffee beer, but is generally sucessful as an imperial stout. If espresso wasn't in the name, I would never identify this as a coffee beer. I suppose that the coffee may have faded since the bottling 6 months ago, but i've not had similar problems with other coffee beers. A pleasant enough beer, but not worth seeking out at the price tag. (933 characters)

Poured from a Bomber into a snifter

A- Pours a motor oil black. Creamy white two finger head with decent lacing.

S- Chocolate and woodiness hit at the start. Coffee not as present as I expected.

T- Strong almost overbearing coffee flavor. Chocolate with a small hint of vanilla. Hops more apparent than expected.

M- Creamy and smooth. Light carbonation allows for a solid feel.

D- Alright, I quite honestly prefer the traditional Yeti to this one.

As much as I like stouts, this one was simply average to me. (514 characters)

Poured from a 22 oz. bomber into a snifter.

Appears black as all black with a one inch thick tan head with tight CO2 bubbles. A bit of lacing is left behind.

Aromas is strongly of coffee, the oak is also there, with some slight dark fruit character. Also a touch of hop character coming through - citrusy.

Taste is immediately of espresso and it stays that way with other layers adding onto it. Midway through the oak kicks into full gear with the woody tone and a very strong vanilla component. Hops come in towards the finish and leave a citric bitterness combined with chocolate and coffee.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, somewhat thick and a very creamy consistency.

This one is...interesting. Not exactly what I thought it would be like, but I like it better than the regular Oaked Yeti. Still would prefer many other coffee beers over this, especially with the $10 per bottle tag. I had to try it though. (914 characters)

A - Pours as black as you can get; about a 2 finger head that lingers long into the drinking session; a fine looking beer

S - The coffee aroma hit me even before the beer was finished pouring out the tap;Holy Black Beer! The aroma is rich, with plenty of chocolate and coffee there, roasted and sweet.

T - start out with roasted and burnt, creamy coffee; the fine bubbly carbonation is a great complement to that; chocolate, vanilla, and oak are also prominent players in this beer; there is a little sweet and spicy combination, to; and finally a slight touch of alcohol

M - Smooth with a pleasant aftertaste left behind.

D- Just keep serving it on tap, and I'll be there (677 characters)

The beer pours a pitch black body that ultimately absorbs light, with a rocky head that is much like weakly made chocolate milk. The aroma is made largely of huge scents of coffee and milk chocolate. Very little alcohol notes. The taste is largely of coffee and dark malts. The mouth feel is of alcohol warmth and finishes bone dry. It's a slow drinking beer that begs to be paired with vanilla bean ice cream (409 characters)

22oz. brown bomber poured into a snifter. Notes.

A: Pitch black, solid viscosity. 2+ finger head, dark mocha with great retention. Some lacing.

S: Plenty of dark coffee/espresso. Powdery cocoa and plenty of alcohol. Roasty.

T/M: Very roasty and loads of bitter espresso. Loads of lasting bitterness from the sharp espresso. More powdery cocoa. body is medium full with decent carbonation. Dry and bitter.

D: bomber was split between 3 people and mine share was enough. Nice after dinner drink, though. (539 characters)

A - Pours blackish with a dark brown head. Good lacing. No surprises, good or bad.

S - Vanilla, chocolate and a surprisingly muted coffee smell.

T - The first second of this two of this beer are fantastic. A great blend of vanilla, chocolate, coffee and bourbon punch the tongue. But then, before I can begin to contemplate the intense and complex flavors, they completely fade to strong coffee and very hoppy finish. A little out of balance. I do have to say that as the beer gets warmer the initial taste lingers longer.

M - Probably the weakest feature of this beer...Maybe its because I'm having this after a week of drinking of KBS, but it seems a little watery - only a little, but still...

D - The ABV coupled with the unbalanced bitter finish make one enough. (771 characters)

Had this the other night at RFD in D.C. and it was definitely an interesting brew. Everyone loved the bottle and was taking pictures with it threw the night in different spots in RFD. Poured into a pint glass and immediately you see the very dark brew pour out with a lovely brown chocolate head forming. Smell was of Espresso and Chocolate. Taste was over the top Espresso, with chocolate. Towards the end of the brew I was hit with some bitterness and fruit flavors. The brew it's self was very interesting and I was glad that I had it, but for $20 at the place was allot to pay for it. The Espresso flavor is very very dominate threw out the beer, so make you keep that in mind and that you are up for the blast. At the time I was honestly not able to finish it due to the overwhelming strong taste of Espresso, but i am sure more serious stout drinkers would have little problem with it. (891 characters)

Dark beer with little translucence. Initial mocha head dues quickly to retained small film. Smells of lots of cocoa, coffee, vanilla and oak (not as pronouced as anticipated). Taste is of coffee and yeti. Nice mouthfeel. Velvety. Finish is long and hard. (276 characters)
