22oz. bottle poured into a Burley Oak snifter (bottled on 12/18/12)

A: Pitch black with a nice bubbly thick mocha head, but not as big as the chocolate yeti.

S: A bit of dark chocolate, with a lot of that acidic espresso scent.

T: Espresso acidity with a nice slightly sweet malt backbone. Black coffee all the way. Just a bit of vanilla oak in there to complement it. It really comes across in the bitter aftertaste that is just like coffee. Only a bit of warming malts here. There is a bit of chocolate taste in there as well.

M: Almost no carbonation, it is very subtle and masked, just a hint of coarseness so it isn't completely flat and gives it a bit of character.

O: I love that the Yeti offers an affordable way to try variations on a single base stout. I think I said this before in another review but I'm not a huge coffee/espresso guy, but they can really put in that flavor.

a: pretty much pitch black, hint of ruby red at the bottom of the glass. nice healthy looking beige head, 2 fingers.

s: dark roasted chocolate malts, espresso, dark chocolate, candy sugar, slight dark fruity raisin/fig. nice smooth oaky vanilla aromas in here as well. smells like it could be good for your soul

t: big bold espresso upfront. bittersweet chocolate, oak. big sweet roasted malt on backend. something almost grassy in here as well. there is no alcohol in the taste, but you do feel the burn a bit. this finishes much sweeter than i expected, but its balanced out by the espresso as you first sip.

m: full and silky. very very faint carbonation

o: definitely a coffee stout. if your not a fan of the roasted coffee/espresso flavors in your beer, this may not be for you. also if you don't like sweet beers, you may want to steer clear. me? i love both of those things, and am enjoying this. its a sipper for sure, and will linger in your mouth for a while.

A: Totally opaque dark brown with a lighter brown frothy layer on top. Head fades to a thin bubbly top while leaving scattered spotty bits on the glass. Head comes back somewhat with a good swirl.

S: Aroma is chocolate, lactose, lightly fruity and bright, with slight coffee musk book ending everything. Perhaps some orange and pine in the sweet chocolate mix.

T: Flavor goes to the next level. Surprisingly refined milky cocoa, bitterness, and fruit. The coffee is clearly there but at the same time it's subtle and you find yourself focussing on the other flavors. You can't tell in the smell but in the flavor alcohol has a presence.

M: Texture is great. Smooth and silky soft. Carbonation is evident in the finish but is otherwise so well mingled it is barely notable. Full body with a light feel.

O: This slow drinking beer is pleasant & delightful. The coffee is worked into this perfectly. Overall, awesome.

Pours black, about as dark a beer as I've ever seen, with a gorgeously thick, frothy head of slowly receding tan cream on top. The coffee presence is brighter than expected, not so dark and oily as most espresso roasts. Sweet and woody with milk chocolate, a variety of vinous fruity esters, and some toast. Heavier roasted malt in the mouth...dark coffee bean, cocoa, and oak. Faint vanilla and char towards the end. Rich, but nothing close to cloying. Thick and beautifully creamy going down easy with a touch of heat after the swallow. Very, very nice. Some alcohol creeps into the flavor, but plays nicely with the wood. Excellent integration of coffee into an already terrific base beer.

Pours black with deep amber accent and thin, brown, relatively quickly dissipating head. Nice lacing.

Smell consists of dark cherries, roasted malt, anise, and coffee. For an espresso stout, the coffee is rather subdued.

Tastes of roasted malt, vanilla, and coffee. Again, coffee is definitely present, but not overbearing. Sweet, slightly alcoholic finish.

Mouthfeel suits style. Full bodied.

Overall, this is a really pleasant beer. As for Yeti variants, I put this in a close second place to the Choco Yeti, but still very good.

22 oz bottle purchased at Beers of the World in Rochester, NY.

Pours a thick, dark, motor oil style black. Puffy one inch coffee colored head forms, with spots of foam down the glass as I drink.

Smells like bright, just brewed esresso, chocolate, and darkly roasted malt.

Tastes like bitter espresso, sweet milk chocolate, vanilla (likely from the oak-aging), a bit of oak, and some slight hop bitterness.

Full, sludgy mouthfeel. Lightly carbonated.

The best Yeti variant I've had yet. One of the purest coffee expressions in beer I've had. So thick, and so good.

Appearance: It has a nice jet black color to it. It has a nice dark tan head that dies down slowly and leaves lovely lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of coffee, espresso, chocolate, dark roasted malts, vanilla and oak.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has some sweet chocolate, coffee, espresso, rich dark roasted malts, some woody oak, vanilla and maybe even molasses.

Mouthfeel: It has a low carbonation with a very nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with great flavors and aromas.

*Notes from 05/31/13

A: Jet black body sits totally opaque in the glass. A closer inspection of smaller sample size does reveal a lighter walnut brown edge. Fizzy and active carbonation forms a nice thick two fingers worth of mocha tan head. Decent retention efforts despite the vigorous bubble action. Minimal lace with just a few ribbons of splash down the glass.

S: Roasty aromas full of dark coffee and chocolates with a pronounced vanilla oakiness. I am surprised at the amount of oak presence actually. Getting some subtle grainy character of toasted oats in there as well. The Espresso really blooms as the beer settles towards room temp in the glass.

T: Rich bold roast flavors meet with a firm hoppy bite. Dark chocolate, oak, and vanilla crème integrate with subtle espresso roast coffee developing some nice complex layers throughout the drink. There is an upper level of hoppy bitterness with a bit of pine noted and some earthy grit to it. Alcohol is noticeable adding a dash of spiced heat. Finishes with some very moderate char and a whisper of licorice. Very nice roast flavors without the astringency which I appreciate. There is a big hop presence to the beer and the oak treatment is evident. Espresso is a bit restrained however it is a nice addition to the base beer and works well here.

M: Great consistency. Should be a big full bodied beer but the spritzy carbonation carries it well. Combine that with an upper level of hop bitterness and you get a nice dry crisp action on the finish. Some warming alcohol. Creamy overall with a nice protein coating left on the tongue.

D: Damn solid variant to the base beer. Lots of layering going on with the dark grains, oak, hops, and espresso. Suprisingly well balanced and drinkable for such a beast of a beer. Worthy of the price tag.

Poured into snifter. Jet black with a thick brown head that sticks around. Smells of rich chocolate and espresso, caramel, as well as oak. The oak seems to bring out some hop smells as well. A bit of alcohol comes through in the smell too. Taste is dark roasted malts, sweet chocolate and bitter espresso, and some oak smoothness at the end. Mouthfeel is big and creamy. This is a great stout, would be great with dessert.

Bottled 1/9/13: Pours motor oil black color, like a black hole, with a thick 1 finger creamy/foamy light brown head that faded very slowly with lava like bubbles popping as it eased down leaving excellent lacing gripping the sides with foamy rings after each sip. A layer remains on top, officially making this a very impressive stout to admire as the aroma seeps out of the glass like an alluring siren (yes, siren was used in the classic mythology context…).

Smells of fresh coffee beans, chocolate syrup or hot fudge, cocoa powder, vanilla, peat moss, burnt wood which I assume is the oak aged influence, and a whole muddled wave of chocolate and coffee malts mixed together for an incredibly rich aroma. Might be detecting hints of brown sugar and molasses, but in the grand scheme of things the differentiation is not required as this is dominated by coffee and chocolate and it smells really damn great.

Tastes as good as it smells, and if you are into coffee stouts then this is sublime perfection: roasted malts, fresh coffee beans, chocolate syrup or hot fudge, cocoa powder, vanilla, peat moss, burnt wood, oak notes, brown sugar, molasses, burnt grains, burnt toast, light floral hops, and what seems like dry chalk ; it’s quite acidic and bitter, but the robust coffee and chocolate notes cradle the hops to balance this just enough not to make this like a cold stale coffee, but in fact like a dynamic espresso infused stout. This Yeti series pretty much nails it every time and this brew is smooth, flavorful and extremely complex for a beer that is actually dependent on two main flavors which somehow seem to alter a bit with each sip as it warms up. The bottle states that this is a stout aged on oak chips with coffee added in the mix, so that must be the secret to the hyper reaction of the intense mixed flavors. I don’t know how else to explain the complexity of the ingredients used, but I can surely state that I have enjoyed every sip of this bomber.

Mouthfeel is creamy, smooth and slick for such a thick, chewy beer with a heavy body, mild carbonation, lots of coffee bitterness like a cup of Starbucks, and a semi-dry finish that trails off with plenty of roasted malts, cocoa and coffee notes. The alcohol is kept in check, and while it peeks through at times it is just another element in the very complex brew that doesn’t let up.

Overall an excellent stout, and with almost 6 months of aging it was delicious, so I’m hoping the next bottle I open at year’s end is even better with some age adding more depth and flavor. This was a great beer and one I highly recommend trying if you are a fan of big, bold coffee stouts. World class indeed.

Presentation: Very cool label in the Great Divide style. Label gives bottled on Date(1-10-13), web info, ABV info, Brewery info, a small description of the beer, food pairing info, Cap is wrapped in an attractive gold foil.

Appearance: Pours out a deep black that lets no light penetrate, with a deep brown 1½ finger of a medium density. Head retention was 2min 44sec before fading to a very thick frothy coating and ring. Excellent lacing.

Smell/Aroma: Smell is intoxicating with strong hints of deep espresso beans along with a sweet dark cocoa. Oak and a slight vanilla also come through along with a slight alcohol scent. A very slight hoppiness is detected. Impressive.

Flavor/Taste: Taste starts out with a smoked oak along with sweet dark chocolate flavor, followed by an ever so slight vanilla that quickly turns bitter with a nice hop bite. Finishes very roasty with a slight warming alcohol bite.

MouthFeel/Drinkability: Thick, creamy, and full bodied with a medium carbonation. Very drinkable and enjoyable.

Overall/Comments: Wow. This beer was impressive. The nose was intoxicating and complex leaving me wanting to just enjoy the aroma all day. The flavor profile was just as impressive and complex. I was left wanting more. Highly recommended. Consumed 3/24/13. Classified as an American Double/Imperial Stout at 9.5% ABV.

I’ve been anticipating this Yeti ever since I tasted the oaked version; adding a little coffee to that stout sounds like a prescription for awesome.

Brewed over five months before the date of this tasting (December 17, 2012).

A: The body pours thick, colored a chocolate brown with reddish hues. It’s covered by a dark tan head that bubbles slowly out of existence, leaving a few strings of lacing behind.

S: An unrelentingly coffee-forward nose, erupting with intense aromas of rich roasts, mocha, hazelnut, and charred oak barrel – an aromatic coffee tone on a bed of chocolaty, round tones. Cocoa, cinnamon-sugar, and the warm hint of bourbon are blended beneath.

T: Like the other Yetis, this is dense and chocolaty: chalky, bittersweet cocoa, fig, anise, and vanilla taffy form the base character. Bitter hop flavors of earthy pine and grass intensify the palate, coupled with a woody, astringent alcohol taste. Though one-dimensional, there is an oaky, smoked finish that brings this beer to a dry, toasted aftertaste. Simple, sweet, satisfying.

M: Moderate body with a pronounced crack of fizzy carbonation. While this is a high-alcohol stout, there’s nothing here that’s too thick to keep it from being undrinkable.

O: Though it’s a potent coffee stout, this beer, like most of the Yetis, has a blended flavor – it’s tough to pick out individual tastes, that is, when everything runs together with a single roasted character. Nonetheless (again, like most of the Yetis), I thoroughly enjoyed it.

A great beer! Overwhelmingly coffee flavored as one might expect from the beer's name, but a beer more complex than that. This beer exhibits the whole range of the dark roast flavor palate. A cold winter's day beer. I would rate this beer higher if not for the alcohol finish.

A - Pours a dark opaque brown with a light reddish brown rocky head, which dissapates quickly (-).

S - Coffee, dark roasted malts, dark chocolate, black licorice.

T - Dark roast coffe, even some dark fruit, some sweetness, medium bitterness, slight unassuming alcohol taste. oak/whiskeyy flavor begins to dominate as the beer warms and the session lasts.

MF - A medium body beer, slight mineral edge, not the viscousness or even the creaminess one might expect. Definitely alcohol in the finish.

A: pours dark black, thick like molasses, no light gets through this beer. Half finger dark tan head that dissipates quickly.

S: deep wood nose, slight notes of chocolate. Espresso is subtle and blends well with the other notes this beer hits

T: wow, instant wood!

M: thick, light carbonation. Alcohol is hidden beautifully. Coats the mouth lettinge savor ever moment.

O: great beer, very well balanced. Oak, subtle chocolate and espresso with a nice malty char wood finish. I'm defiantly getting more to put away. Can't wait.

A-Pours a pitch black, motor oil color with a thick, creamy light brown colored head with lovely retention. Foam coats the entire glass and sticks to the side in one of the thickest latticeworks I've ever witnessed.

S-Dark chocolate, meat grilled over oak chips, a bit nutty, bitter and dark chocolate with the faintest twinge of alcohol. Booziness is well hidden for a 9.5% abv brew.

T-Sweet dark chocolate comes through at the front with a touch of nuttiness that precedes the charred oak in the middle of the palate. Finishes with a bitter taste of coffee (as expected) with a faint twinge of booziness again. Lingering aftertase of vanilla. Malty sweetness is balanced well with the bitter coffee and oak chips. Outstanding.

MF-Sticky as hell. Probably the stickiest beer I've had as it clings to the glass and does not want to let go. Body is full and thick, finishes like whole milk with a touch of carbonation. Well played, Gread Divide.

O-The best version of the Yeti series. And probably my favorite Imperial Stout so far. Balance is perfect. Complex as hell and the alcohol is hidden well. Absolutely no complaints.

Served in a snifter glass.

Appearance: Motor oil black, freaking dark and seriously opaque. You see the light brown bubbles hovering to the surface of the brew creating a dark tan head just about 2/3".

Smell: An appetizing aroma of coffee, plus a hit of molasses that shakes/ up the nostrils.

Taste: I served this brew cold but indeed let it sit a bit to warm up so I could absorb how rich it is. Strong coffee bean, slightly over shadows the rest of the beer but still outstanding . Little sweet in the end maybe the molasses or the aging (because you definitely feel some vanilla).

Mouth: Medium and sticky, comes a bit dry. The bitter finish is the awesome.

Overall: If you like coffee infused imperial stouts, this one should be at the top of your list. It is a little pricy but it never hurts to treat yourself every now and then. Think of it a a super-sized breakfast stout, breakfast not included. Salud!

Great Divide Espresso Oak-aged Yeti Russian Imperial Stout, Great Divide Brewing, Denver, Colorado.

Fully black, utterly deep, with dark brown head. Looks fantastic, very promising.

Aroma: Espresso is detected first, with chocolate not far behind, rich, decadent cocoa. Very nice.

Taste: On the tongue, it's thick, rich and hoppy. Not getting the oak just yet, but the flavor is dominated by cocoa and coffee. Great and surprising balance in this big, big beer. The espresso flavor is here, but doesn't dominate like in some coffee stouts. Full-bodied, with a long, sweet and hoppy finish. There's a certain cherry-like sweet character that stands on top and melds well with the bitter notes. Cocoa and coffee lurk in the back of the throat, hang in there, never letting go.

This is not the behemoth I worried it would be, it's a complex, and wonderful ale. Many flavors unfold during it's duration. Massive malt, incredibly full-bodied, flush with flavor.
Knockout stout, this. Maybe my favorite Yeti? No, it has to stand just behind regular oak-aged Yeti, though I haven't had it in a while. Maybe I should…

Dark black with a one finger mocha head, which fades to 1/4 inch and holds, leaving nice lacing. The aroma has dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, and roasted malt.

The taste is more coffee forward than chocolate forward, as the name suggests. There is coffee, roasted malt, chocolate, cocoa, alcohol, and oak. The oak is pretty strong, and a bit too strong in my opinion. Still solid though.

Medium bodied with average carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel. Has a strong coffee aftertaste. Another good effort in the Yeti series from Great Divide.

Bottled on: February 12, 2010. 22 oz bottle with gold foil into a DFH signature glass.

A - Pours a jet black body with three fingers of dark mocha foam. Thick edging with solid lacing and retention.

S - Rich milk chocolate, cocoa butter, roasted malts, vanilla and some light bitterness. Oak is there but obviously not as complex as a a barrel. The coffee is definitely faded and about as noticeable as any non coffee stout which develops some of those bean notes via the malts. A bit harsh and boozy on the finish.

T - Rich and decadent chocolate, cocoa powder, woody oak, light roast, a touch of vanilla and then faded coffee beans. The oak is very noticeable and quite tasty against the chocolate backbone but the coffee is just an afterthought now. Luckily there is no awkward bitterness from the coffee left over, which is something I've found in KBS with a year or two on it. Mouth feel is thick and creamy.

O - Probably a former shell of itself as the large selling point, the espresso, is all but gone. Fortunately the oak shines through and the standard yeti is a delicious chocolate bomb which makes for an outstanding stout with nearly 2.5 years on the clock.

Appearance:
The beer itself comes closer to a really dark brown that borders on black. The foam is a coffee colored tan.

Smell:
Coffee and sweet dark chocolate dominates the nose.

Taste:
The main notes are coffee and dark chocolate with a bit of hops that tastes pretty nice. I get tiny bit of vanilla that along with the dark chocolate balances well against the strong coffee tastes.

Mouthfeel:
Barely any carbonation. Very full-bodied.

Overall:
A fairly decent Imperial Stout and one that I would probably pick up again.

22oz from Belmont Station.

A: Pours with a big foamy dark mocha head. So black it obscures the printing on my Bailey's tulip. Some good stains.

N: Lots of smoke, espresso, and oak. Strong enough to smell from a few feet away. Chocolate, tobacco and leather. Overtures of vanilla. Coffee brings an overt acidity. Dry earth. Worth savoring.

T: Starts with the hoppy bitterness. Lots of smoke and coffee which adds another element to the bitter side. Oak dries this out. There's not a ton of sweetness, but it is there. Like drinking a heavily roasted espresso.

M: Oily and heavy, though it doesn't coat the palate like some other RISes. Still it's not slouch. Alcohol is well-hidden.

O: A hoppy coffee forward stout that has a lot of layers and which I very much enjoy. I wish it had a bit more sweetness to prop up the coffee, but it's a minor complaint. Well done. Need to buy more next year.

Appearance- Pours up a good amount of head and reminds me a lot of Stone's Espresso Imperial in appearance- no surprise. A very dark mocha/chocolate milk head that contains hints of purple perhaps a shade lighter than Stone. This appears as if it will take some time though big bubbles are forming. As for lacing, this is sheeting the glass. The body is also an opaque chocolate black. Very beautiful. The sheeting seems to be restricted to the top of the glass. No lacing is left after a little over a half and inch except for some connecting streaks. Leaves sheeting after each sip.

Nose- Fantastic! Smoke came out as I poured it. I can smell rich roasted coffee and chocolate and malts from a foot away. This is extremely rich with coffee and chocolate aromas. Hints of oak, vanilla, and caramel. If the flavor profile matches the aroma, this is going to be at least a 4.5 and maybe a 4.75. There's a good amount of nuttiness that arrives from the elegant roast of chocolate and coffee. Some light notes of cherry and coconut as well.

Taste- Pretty much the nose is represented on the palate. There's a lot going on here. Chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, cherry, coconut, and a warm tingle from the alcohol. This reminds me a lot of many of my favorite imperials. There is a tinge of vanilla and oak but this is much more subtle than Oak Aged Yeti. The oak is subtle in the beginning and has a small linger in the finish. The espresso is not as strong as in Stone because the espresso notes are spread throughout the entire flavor profile. Pretty much all the notes of this very complex beer are diffused throughout the entire tasting. Very dark chocolates and cacao are prominent. Hints of nut- peanut perhaps. The caramel becomes stronger as it opens up. Some honey shows through as well.

Mouthfeel- Between medium bodied and full. Very smooth, very creamy. This has a lovely texture to it. It is imbued with silkiness and tiny bit of grit and carbonation. Pretty much perfect.

Drinkability- This is even more dangerous than the Stone Espresso. I cannot get enough of this beer. At least, it's a little less alcoholic than the Stone. The 9.5% makes itself known at first but quickly fades into the background. This is definitely worth the 10+ (?) I paid. The one thing in Stone's favor- it's seven bucks. I think this one might have been 11,12.

Overall- This is a great beer. It's between A and A+, a definite 4.75. This makes it one notch above the Stone. An exquisite beer.

A gift from a client who knows I like coffee and big stouts...

The appearance of this beer as it pours into the glass is awesome looking. It is thick and black with lacing on the side of the glass and a orangish, brown head.

The smell is of roasted malts and coffee. There is a faint scent of oak as well.

The taste is initially a roasted flavor with some oak. The coffee hits you pretty hard on the back end of each sip. It is bitter but with a faint sweetness.

The mouth feel was fairly full and it felt like it had more carbonation than what showed up on the initial pour.

Overall, a very solid coffee stout.

A – Jet black and thick. Head is a thin, chocolate brown later that leaves beautiful lace.

S – Bitter coffee, chocolate, and oak notes. No sweetness here. In your face with strong, bitter coffee.

T – Dry and more bitter coffee and oak notes, some light cocoa powder. Surprisingly large influence from the oak here. Nicely balanced.

M – On the fuller side of things, though not overly heavy. Reminiscent of a big strong cup of coffee. Finish is long, lingering and enjoyable.

O – Best coffee beer tasted thus far. Rich, authentic, dark bitter coffee flavors without any cloying sweetness to detract.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled 1/10/2013. Pours dense pitch black color with a nice 1 finger dense dark tan head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Good soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big dark roasted coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malt, light char, vanilla, oak, toast, toffee, and light floral. Fantastic aromas with great balance of coffee and dark malts with moderate oak character. Taste of dark chocolate, espresso, roasted malt, light char, oak, vanilla, toast, toffee, light pine, floral, and roasted earthiness. Lingering notes of dark chocolate, espresso, roasted malt, light char, oak, vanilla, toffee, and light pine on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity and balance of dark malt, coffee, and oak flavors; with zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a creamy and fairly slick mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic imperial coffee stout as expected. Great complexity and balance of coffee and roasted flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A highly enjoyable offering.
