Served from a 22 oz bottle into a Sam Adams glass.

A: wow. pours like motor oil into the glass. Visible viscosity. Opaque black, no hint of color. Head is a very dark tan and pours about 3 fingers thick, and quickly dissipates.

S: mix of french-roasted coffee, char, and dark chocolate. A little woody. Also some herbal hop aroma that complements the above nicely.

T: charred wood dominates but mixes in with coffee beans and a little background chocolate. Definitely an alcohol flavor, like a thick stout laced with a fine Scotch. These flavors dominate and there is a very slight hint of dark dried fruit but not really much. Some tanniny wood flavor in the later stages.. The finish puckers a bit with the dry alcohol, a very firm hop bitterness, and a substantial but not overwhelming oak flavor.

M: oily, chewy, and heavy. The alcohol definitely warms the mouth (and the belly). Somewhat puckering.

D: share with a friend if possible, and pair with a creamy dessert (even something as simple as vanilla ice cream) for a nice contrast. After a few sips I definitely can feel it. Would definitely serve this as a closer in a flight, and I will also seek out the other oak-aged Yeti variations.

A - A deep, rich black color with a very fine brown head that rose about two fingers. Great looking.

S - Nice oak, some espresso in there, but more milky cocoa than espresso in there. Nice smelling.

T - Very milky tasting. Nice bitter coffee taste and a lot of milk chocolae. Tiny bit of hops, and something sugary and sweet.

M - Milky, creamy, very smooth. I wish it had some more carbonated bite though.

D - Don't get any alcohol in this, so drinkable, but not a huge fan of it enough to seek it out.

A: darker brown head a finger high that doesn't go away on top of a black opaque body.

S: alcohol, espresso, dark chocolate, and a hint of sweetness.

T: straight espresso and dark chocolate and toffee up front. Creamy, slight sweet with some bitterness towards the end. Probably the best aspect of the beer. Lingering sweetness and bitterness.

M: surprisingly medium body. Thought it would be thicker. Lower carbonation, which would be okay with thicker mouthfeel. Slightly creamy finish.

D: with more carbonation and slightly lower alcohol it would be crazy drinkable.

A solid, but not aggressive pour, sneaks up on me and fills my 25cl tulip glass with three fingers of foam as well as overflowing a bit. The head is a full brown hue that is as dark as I can remember seeing in a long time. The beer is pitch black in color, though it does pass a hint of light around the edges if I really hunt for it (the hue is amber leaning, though it is still pretty opaque). The aroma has a sharp, acrid espresso character to it that is quite noticeable from the get go. The beer is a bit cold so in the microwave it goes for 15 seconds to make it cool. The warming smoothes out the acrid notes a bit, but they still play the dominant role here. Some aromas that do become noticeable though are a charred, blueberry-like, fruitiness, some notes of charcoal, a touch of sweet dark malt, charred tobacco, a toasted brown malt / biscuit maltiness and a touch of chocolate at times. The aroma is a bit simplistic in its overwhelming charred (both espresso and malt) character, though it is not bad.

The beer feels smooth and creamy as it first hits my tongue; it is not overly thick and seems a bit light compared to some heavy Imperial Stouts. Dark chocolate flavors are noticed along with an up front sweetness. Chewy, toasted and burnt whole-grain flavors are here along with a bread / cracker like middle. The finish has a burnt, lingering, roasted bitterness to it; there is also a huge hop bitterness here though, but I don't notice the ample hop flavor presence that is in the regular Yeti. The flavor is somewhat acrid, with a touch of roast derived acidity, but it is quite a bit smoother than the aroma would have suggested. As the beer warms and my palate gets used to it, the beer picks up a lot more roasted fruitiness; notes of burnt prunes, figs and perhaps a touch of raisin are noticeable. It also picks up a touch of dark / roast grain burnt vegetal character at times in the finish, though this is pretty light. The fruit notes are accentuated by the hoppiness and the vegetal note is enhanced by the herbal hop notes. This has a nice, complex sweetness from the dark malt. Some spicy oak accentuates the acrid notes a bit as well as adding a touch of hotness to the finish. The oak is fairly muted overall though.

I definitely like the regular Yeti better as the espresso just makes this a bit too harsh. It is not a bad beer though and I find myself even enjoying it.

Bomber bottled on Feb 13th 2009...

Pours a very dark, almost black with a tan one finger head. I can see small red highlights if I hold it up to the light. Head is sticking around for the review. The smell is actually more boozy than expected. I thought this beer would mellow with a half a year age on it. I can definitely smell the oak and chocolate, but I'm struggling to find the espresso on the nose. A quick swirl of the glass only brings up the alcohol aroma. Definitely smells sweet and roasty once you get past the hot alcohol presence. As far as taste goes, it's a grand slam. You get a rush of sweet fruits and alcohol, but it is mellowed quickly by a very nice coffee and cocoa presence. It seems like the cocoa sticks to your tongue, making for a very nice mouthfeel, almost like the way a sugary hot cocoa leaves a residue of sticky chocolate on your tongue. Very nice. Wouldn't consider this one too drinkable, might be better with a little aging. I attempted to keep this one as long as I could, but it was calling my name. Not the first I've had, but the first I sat down to review. Very solid stout.

22oz. bomber into tulip glass on 4/15/09. Thanks to FooFaa for sharing!

A - Poured a black body with a burnt tan head that reduced to a thin veil and deposited some spotted lace around the glass.

S - Surprisingly muted nose for an espress oak-aged Imperial Stout! Subtle bourbon and woody notes with some vanilla sweetness and a hint of coffee. I was expecting a much more prominent aroma here.

T - Flavor is quite hoppy throughout with bitter coffee and a hefty roasted character, which then segues into a prevalent vanilla aspect that cools everything down just a notch or two and alleviates some of the bourbon's warmth. Some earthy hop notes and coffee bitterness/astringency appear in the finish. This is one hoppy mo-fo of a stout!

M - Full bodied with an oily texture and a touch of carbonation. Lingering metallic bitterness in the finish.

D - I can't believe what I'm about to say, but I actually found this to be a bit too hoppy and a bit off-kilter. I felt the espresso character wasn't pronounced enough. I was overall pleased with the roasty and bourbon qualities but this just didn't blow me away like I was expecting. With that said, this version of Yeti is still a fine brew.

Poured from a bomber into a half-pint glass.
Bottled on 12/20/10

A: Opaque black color with less than one finger of diminishing beige foam head. Moderate lacing remains on the glass.

S: Hearty coffee, freshly ground, is joined by faint bitter chocolate. Almost all suggestion of dark fruit is suppressed by the aggressive coffee. There is a charcoal crispness present also covering up or filling in where one might expect a little too much fruit to show up. No alcohol is detected.

T: Begins almost sweet, with roasted malt and acidic dark fruit. Coffee emerges in the middle, contributing intense bitterness that transitions rather seamlessly into similarly intense hop bitterness in the finish. Chocolate is largely absent, as is wood, although mineral astringency shows itself periodically--most notably lingering late. No alcohol is detected.

M: Medium to thick viscosity, slick on the palate but also harshly acidic, with low carbonation.

D/O: This imperial stout is distinguished well from its Yeti siblings by the addition of coffee. It has big coffee qualities, but they are effective in the way they are integrated into the base beer. Unfortunately it is tethered to that dark beer-acidity that can turn a good stout into a challenging stout that becomes wearisome quickly. Here acidity is more prevalent than in other Yeti varietals, probably an unintended contribution of the coffee. The drinker must take the good qualities with the less-palatable when it comes to coffee in beer.

Bottled on may of 2009, the bottle is a 22 ouncer with gold foil around the cap. The beer pours thick and dark with deep orange and reddish highlights during the pour but becomes a black hole when it hits the glass. A rich solid foam rises above the beer the color of milk chocolate. It lasts forever and laces the glass down to the last drop.

The EOAYeti smells like dark fruits, full dark grains and a little earthy woody note. The espresso is present but not the wallop I was expecting. A nice chocolaty roasted nose, but the coffee portion of this beer smells stale and bitter.

Taste is thick and heavy on the tongue. There are a lot of competing flavors in this beer that I feel kill the character. The chocolaty grains are cut by a coffee and hop bitterness. An old oak plank flavor is mixed with a raisin, current dark fruit note that fights each other. Too much conflict and not one flavor being a dominate player.

Where this beer shines is in the finish. The roasty, toasty goodness is amazing and lasts well past the beer going down your throat. The mouthfeel is viscous and chewy making a smooth slick feeling beer. Light carbonation lets you taste the complexity of the flavors (even if I feel there are too many competing) which adds to my enjoyment. This beer is a fine brew but not one I would put in my top 10. Very enjoyable but too rich with all those fine flavors. I'd rather see this one focus on it's best asset and have the rest back off a little to solidly back it up.

A- A deep, dark black with an absolutely massive orange/brown head that has excellent retention. Astounding.

S- Espresso, cinnamon, a big roasty aroma, some oatmeal, and and loads of oak.

T- Espresso, cinnamon, and a shit load of woodchips. A bit hoppy and hot. The more I got into this, the more enjoyable it became. The woody aspect was still a bit overdone.

M- Smooth with just a bit of oak, alcohol, and hop harshness on the end. Overall it is very smooth though. On the tail end, this is a beast and I can feel it on my breath.

D- I am a bit torn with this. I know that with some time, the oak flavors will die off a bit, but so will the amazing espresso parts. Definitely worth a shot, and probably worth aging- just for fun.

A - Pours a beautiful black with a deep brown thick head. Deep brown on the edges. Tiny bubbles form a thick head and some stick on the glass. Probably one of the nicest looking beers I've seen.

S - Espresso, chocolate and oak are heavy up front with the espresso taking the lead. Smells like freshly brewed coffee.

T - Coffee bitterness gives way to a dry oaky finish. Milk chocolate in the middle is brief. Long and dry finish due to the oak. This is a very strong brew up front and in the back...overwhelms the middle flavors.

M - Rich and full bodied. Great carb, very dry. The driness sticks on the toungue for a very long aftertaste.

O - Overall a nice beer. Almost unbalanced due to the strength of the coffee up front and oak in the back.

A: Pours pitch black with about a finger of brown head. Retention is great.

S: I get strong spicy oak with espresso, dark chocolate, and floral hops. Oak is really overpowering, but the aroma is still quite nice.

T: Again, overpowering oak with lots of dark chocolate and bitter hoppiness. Espresso builds stronger as the beer warms, as does milk chocolate. Once the beer gets up to room temperature, it's quite smooth and nice. The oakiness and hoppiness seems to fade a bit.

M: A tad thin with strong prickly carbonation.

O: The oak on this is really strong, but this beer is quite nice when it warms up. Still a bit oaky and hoppy for me, but a nice beer.

Tasted in a Spiegelau tulip during a RIS tasting (with plain crackers and water for palate cleansing between tastings).

Pours a deep brown, almost black, with an espresso crema-like head with moderate lacing and nice retention.

The aroma delivers on the label's promise, sweet espresso, light raisin notes back up the coffee roast.

On the palate the espresso roast is most forward, it's a touch stale, but still nice. Astringency is prevalent, and it's a little one note, but a quite tasty one.

Medium full with a lingering, bitter finish.

A solid coffee stout, but not one that ranks with the best.

A - It appears like the prototypical 2x Stout, black and tan head, great lacing.

S - I can tell this stuff will give me the coffee-jitters from the smell alone; a coffee-lover's dream. Huge espresso aroma dominates. In this regard it is a one-trick pony, as many of Yeti's intricacies are overwrought by the massive dose of java.

T - The strong dark roast coffee flavor pervades, with small suggestions of lemon zest. This bottle is about 2 years old; it probably could've chilled out at least another year. I would say that the hop flavor has dwindled substantially but the bitterness hasn't, and when fused with the coffee it verges on acrid. But espresso is supposed to be like that anyway, so it isn't a problem, but it would be nicer if more of the sweetness would come out. My verdict, as far as aging this: I would either drink it pretty fresh, or chill it out for at least three years.

M - On the thin side, but very slick, so it all evens out. Fairly well-carbonated.

D - This beer is a bit much, strong flavor for a one-trick pony. Second-tier stout at best.

Bomber poured into a pint glass

A- An opaque black with less than a finger of a dark brown head that holds very well with nice lacing.

S-Roasted malts most prominent at the beginning as it changes to the coffee/espresso smell of the middle of the beer that is coupled with some dark chocolate. Mild amount of hops can be noticed as the back end of the beer changes more to a burnt coffee smell.

T- Subtle roasted malts begin the beer moving into the the dark chocolate and a slight taste of roasted coffee. Towards the end of the beer it moves into a harsh hop bitterness with some dark chocolate and burnt coffee beans. The bitterness lingers with little amount of alcohol noticeable. A little disappointed in the lack of coffee/espresso taste in this beer along with the harsh finish.

M- Thick, chewy body with moderate amounts of carbonation.

D- Harsh finish on this beer makes the drinkability suffer a little. Surely not hard to drink though.

Notes: Not my favorite Yeti offering and a little disappointed since I was looking forward to this one so much. Certainly worth a try though.

This selection was a bomber poured into a pilsner glass.

A - Poured jet black. Maybe a quarter finger caramel-colored head with nice lacing.

S - Espresso, espresso, and little espresso. Actually when you get into it you get chocolate, molasses, and hints oaky vanilla undertones...but it's definitely all about the espresso.

T - Espresso is the definite up-front taste. Bitter cocoa throughout finishing with that oaky-vanilla flavor.

M - Quite smooth - a little more of a hit of carbonation than I was expecting.

O - My passion for coffee lead me to this one and I did enjoy it, but my preference would still be the regular Yeti. Overall, a good Imperial. But for me, a tad bit too strong on the espresso side. I love espresso, but apparently not as much in my beer.

Poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: Matte black (except for the very outermost bottom edge, which was brown). Creamy brown head sits on top and retains well. Excellent ring-like lacing.

Smell: Lots of black coffee/espresso and dark chocolate. Solid roasted malt backbone - smells thick. There's that same sharp, dark fruit smell I got in regular Yeti. Yum. Some piney hops emerge from the shadows. Nice.

Taste: Hmmm... that's a lot of coffee. Should I be surprised? No. But there is something astringent in there that I'm not too keen on. Dark, roasted malts and tons of bitter hops. Lots of roasty, espresso-ness. Isn't that what it's supposed to be? Yes, I suppose... Tons of alcohol in the back. Aftertaste = yuck.

Mouthfeel: Creamy, well carbonated, a little syrupy and quite dry. Drier than it should be. Full-bodied but not overly heavy.

Drinkability: Letdown. Yep, letdown. Not a bad imperial stout, but doesn't even touch Yeti or OA Yeti. Too much espresso and too much alcohol. A lot of good aspects, but a couple of glaring bad ones. Glad I tried it, but I won't be seeking this out again.

22 oz. bottled on 4/2/2010, reviewed 11/20/10. Pint glass.

A- Small dark brown 1/4" head on the 1st pour. I poured the 2nd glass more aggressively and it practically overflowed my glass. The taller head left behind a good bit of webby lacing. Both times the head faded to a small ring. Beer is completely opaque black.

S- Strong oak, espresso, dark roasted malts. Some alcohol.

T- Oak upfront followed by dark, bitter espresso. Burnt sugar, faint toffee. Alcohol at times. Mainly dominated by the bitter espresso for me. Faint vanilla at times, mingled with the oak. No chocolate.

M- Full bodied, lightly creamy. No real carbonation. Dry oaky finish. Some mild alcohol heat.

D- A little bit hot at times, but the alcohol is mostly well hidden. Glad to see both namesake ingredients (oak and espresso) make an appearance on my palette. OK balance here but the bitter, dark espresso sort of becomes the dominant flavor after awhile. I enjoyed this, but it didn't really wow me.

A: nice, very silky appearance. Looks like a volcano bubbling over, head very sludgey. The beer wants to do its own thing. Lacing like a complex topographic map. 4.5

S: Smells a bit more earthy and dry than Peche Mortel with less synthetic smell and brown sugar sweetness and more dry hops. Evokes rye complexities and chocolate. 4.5

T: More complex rye and earthy chocolate. Good bitterness. Had a sweet beer before which may have primed the tastebuds but even then it tastes a little bit sweet to me. 3.5

M: Seems thick enough. 4

O: Good beer. Bit sweet and lacking complexity once it gets to the tastebuds. Drinkable though. 3

Poured into snifter
9 oz pour

Color: Dark brown, almost black. A think caramel colored head forms after the pour and then it quickly disappears. A good amount of lacing is left behind on the glass.

Nose: Bitter coffee, but not a good kind of coffee. Lets just sy I wouldn't enjoy that cup of joe if I had to drink it. Roasted malts, but nothing impressive. The faint chocolate and vanilla flavors save the the nose from being below par.

Palate: Bitter and just blah. Nothing to great here the coffee is present, but its not pleasing. The abv goes in and out and ruins the good parts of this beer. Drinkability is not great, but its not bad when the beer is chilled.

Finish: Just coffee, not much complexity. This beer isn't awful, but its def not good. I expect better from great divide.

Bottle. Drank on July 22, 2011 into Duvel tulip.

Appearance: 4.5
A black body with a mild chocolate brown head of one and a half inches. Very dense. Nice looking beer.

Smell: 4
Prominent notes of coffee, a slight candy sugar sweetness. Notes of dark and milk chocolate.

Taste: 4
Initially slight sweetness and a soft coffee flavor. Oaki-ness comes through more as beer warms. Notes of vanilla from the oak. Midway through the hops bitterness bursts through on the palate. Finishes with bitter chocolate roasti-ness.

Mouthfeel: 3.5
Mild to moderate carbonation, a little thinness. (thinner that I thought it would be). Slight dryness from hops which is more noticeable near the finish.

Overall: 4
A very enjoyable beer, but not as amazing as I thought it would be. Still definitely worth trying once, but I have many other RIS that I enjoy more. Espresso does work well.

Spent $12 on one bomber, so this better be good!
Appearance: Pours like motor oil. Pitch black with thick rusty brown head.
Smell: Very powerful! Could smell it right after opening the bottle. Black coffee with some oaky dark chocolate.
Taste: Strong, bitter black coffee with a slight spiciness. Way more bitter than sweet (though it has some sweetness). A very slight booziness.
Mouthfeel: Good amount of carbonation. Pretty thick and chewy with no watery feeling common in many stouts I have encountered.
Overall: This is certainly a good to great beer, but I have had better coffee flavored stouts and this is not worth $12 a bomber. Would try again, but not near that price tag. This issue keeps me from recommending it.

Had a bottle at the GD tap room. While appearance and feel were both very solid for style, the taste was a bit overloaded with coffee for my liking. I haven't had a coffee stout in a while, however, the coffee was so overpowering, it became difficult to overlook this aspect. Coffee was definitely front and center on the nose, but I still picked up a good deal of crusty bread and roast qualities from the malt. While I think a little time in the cellar will make this one a knockout, as of this tasting the coffee makes this almost too one note in terms of flavor profile.

A: Dark black body under a huge brown head. Good lace and OK retention. Good looking beer.

S: Roasted malt, hint of chocolate, lots of coffee and espresso. I felt at the beginning of drinking the lighter coffee notes outweighed the rich espresso I was expecting, but after a few sips they tend to come to an equilibrium.

T: Creamy sweetness up fronts turns to huge espresso, coffee and roasted malt finish. Decent amount of bitterness. Booze is there, and at times is unfortunately medicinal in character. Bit of a grassy hop can be had as well.

M/D: Full bodied, low carbonation, alcohol can be felt. Drinkability is decent. A big beer that needs to be sipped. Overall, I'm slightly underwhelmed with the total package, but it's still a fine beer.

I had this one in the middle of a promotional liquor giveaway. I couldn't resist, even with free liquor around.

It looks just like I want an Imperial stout to look. Black, shiny, with a massive brown head. Poured into a small snifter. I could hardly see any highlights, though the lighting in the restaurant wasn't incredible (still daylight when consumed though, so not a problem). Nice looking. The smell was light on the coffee, very light on the wood (maybe it was too old to get the full force). There were some dried fruits, a tiny bit of sweetness, heavy on the roasted malts. The smell, without the oaking (which adds some vanilla and woody, earthy smells) and coffee (which enhances the roastiness) was about average, but the extra stuff pushes it beyond average. I kind of liked the smell, though it could be better. The taste was right on. I mean, everything was there, but the only drawback was just that the base was a little too estery (maybe a little too hot). There was coffee, vanilla, a tiny bit of wood, some decent sweetness (not quite enough, in my opinion), roast barley, everything. Wish there was a bit of bready sweetness. That is all I wanted. But I found that this had everything else I expect, in fact, it exceeds what the average person does by quite a bit. I mean, if I judge it along the others, it more than deserves the score, if I judge it by my own standards, it just about earns it. The wood and coffee help the mouthfeel, of course. This one doesn't cling like regular yeti, it isn't too harsh or rough, it's just nice and pleasant, a bit better than normal, but not incredible. I drank this one down rather quickly, and enjoyed it. I would ask everyone to try it, I mean, I wasn't a huge fan of the regular yeti, and if you weren't a fan, this was much better. Try it if you can (it may be too late now). worth a shot.

Pours oily black. Creamy, dense, tightly-packed, milk chocolate colored head. Holds extremely well, before it slowly falls, leaving a scattered film.

Smells of fresh coffee grounds, heavy roasted malt, and muted bakers chocolate. Soft, underlying vanilla, with a slight hint of alcohol.

Taste is similar to nose. Strong coffee and roast, almost competing for the spotlight. Vanilla comes out stronger than it did on the nose. Light bakers chocolate. A strong, bold, woodsy oak finish with moderate to high hop (or is that coffee) bitterness.

Medium bodied, medium carbonation. Creamy body. Slight residual malty stickiness. Liberally bittered finish. The sweetness is strong on the aftertaste.

This is likely the oakiest beer I have ever had, its almost distracting. The coffee characteristics are bold, without being overbearing (fd: Im a coffee addict). The subtle vanilla note is perfected throughout. A bit harsh on the bitterness, and I would have liked to see more sweetness.
