Not a huge fan of stouts but was hoping the coffee flavor would be a little stronger in this

On tap in a shaker pint.

In the dimly lit confines of the bar, this appears close to jet black, with a wispy head that quickly disappears. This is replaced by an oily sheen that increases the motor oil illusion. Obviously no lacing.

Unfortunately things don't improve dramatically from there. I prefer the java in coffee beers to play a supporting role, but it dominates to a distracting level here. Even with no head and a shitty shaker pint glass, strong coffee greets my nose from a foot away, and I can detect little else upon closer consideration. As for the flavors, a solid base beer seems to lurk underneath, viscous and oily with plenty of dark malts and chocolate sweetness and some warming booziness, but the intense java presence clubs it all into submission.

I've only had one other Yeti variation (oak-aged), and it was quite enjoyable. I will certainly seek out the others, but can't recommend the espresso version. I may grab a botttle or 2 to throw in the cellar to see if it improves with time.

When will I learn.

Tried a bottle of this being intrigued by the espresso and oak aspect of it. Pours almost black in color. There's a very nice dark brown colored head that sits atop the beer. So far so good.
Smell is over the top piney hops. Not even espresso and oak aged can tame this beast. What's the point in even attempting it or putting it on the label. This is just your typical overly hopped stout. So overhopped in fact that you have to hunt during the entire duration of drinking this beast just to find a hint of coffee or espresso buried under this avalanche of piney hops. There are some hints of the oak aging. The mouthfeel is somewhat more creamy than the nose and flavor would lead on. Unfortunately I will never know what this beer would taste like being espresso/oak aged.

Oh well, you live and you learn.

I like oaked beer and love coffee. Until yesterday, I'd never had a GDBC beer I didn't like, and never had a Yeti I didn't love. Imagine my surprise when this became my first of both.

The pour as always is beautiful - gloppy with a polluted looking head. Nice. The smell is a bit subtle, roast, oak, but not a lot of coffee. Not bad, but a bit...hmmm.

Taste is a problem, the coffee is completely absent. Oak and roast are there, but they merge with a totally unexpected shot of hop to create a bitterness that is borderline intolerable. Just not fun to drink. Wonderfully creamy consistency, as is the case with all Yetis. But taste matters most, so this beer is thumbs-down. I will still go after other Yeti mutations, but I am done with this one. Still a bit shocked.

Pour is like every other stout known to man. Pitch black, caramel head.

OK the smell has hops everywhere. Theres an unexpected hop presence in the smell. Sweet chocolate as well.

Hm. Theres a ton going on. Its so bitter. Woody bitterness, earthy hop presence. Lesson learned, hops and chocolate do not go well together. All the flavors are there that would make this thing great: chocolate, stout, bitterness, and oak, but they dont mesh together.

Exhales produce a hop bitterness that I dont really want.

Honestly, it just has this odd kind of overly bitter feeling that reminds of a liquor that I cant get rid of. It seems unbalanced and a mess. I really wanna like this thing, but I just cant. Its like a cheap red wine, thats the only thing I can think of. Bad Pinot Noir or Cabernet.

A fan of Great Divide beers, I was surprised to discover one I do not like, and this is it. Way over the top, it seems it can not decide whether it wants to be coffee or stout. Cloying sweet combined with full alcohol strength. This is meat for somebody else. An expensive waste of time.

22 oz. bottle served in a tulip at The Birch, Norfolk, VA, $18. Beautiful dark creamy head, excellent retention. Nose reminded me of 409, which is probably just the oak barrel taking over the brew. A hint of vanilla does come through after you wade through the oak (almost peppery). There are some roasted chocolate notes, and the espresso is defintely in the flavor profile too. Good mouthfeel, typical of imperials.

As another reviewer stated, there is just too much going on in this beer. They should either eliminate the oak aging or the espresso, so you can enjoy the ingredients. A bit pricey, but they have something they can tweak in future batches.

It pours black with bubbly, tan foam. The aroma is earthy and woody, like an oak aged chardonnay, with notes of chocolate and espresso. The espresso flavor is obvious. There are hints of vanilla and dark fruit. It's very hoppy for a stout, with quite a bitter finish. I wish it was creamier. Apparently, I don't care for oak aging in beer any more than in wine.

I expected great things, but was disappointed. I like big stouts and coffee/chocolate is usually good.

The aroma was OK, but nothing mouth watering. I didn't get much coffee scent, I could pick it out if I tried. The chocolate was there.

Poured into a pint glass. It was black with 3 fingers of head. Looked great.

The taste was disappointing. Lead off was a heavy dose of sweetness, similar to ST Choklat, sweet, but not as rich or balanced. The middle was kind of bland, the sweet faded rapidly to be followed up by a sharply contrasting bitterness; not at all complimentary IMO.

I took it out of the fridge an hour before serving, I though that would be enough. As it continued to warm up after another hour in the glass, the espresso presented itself a bit more, still not all that much.

Not to keen on the drinkability. I never did get used to the stark contrast between big sweet start and huge bitter finish, with the hole in the middle.

22 oz bottle, bottle 2/13/09. Pours a dark black with a thick creamy dark brown head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet chocolate, cream, and coffee. Some roasted and charred malts and black licorice come out as it sits and then take over.

The flavor is sweet lactic chocolate at first with a big charred roasted bitter finish that dominates. It's very acidic and just sits on the tongue. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and a little watery.

Overall, it started off so promising, but the charred tarry finish is just too unpleasant. And where are the coffee flavors? This reminds me a lot of the oak aged Yeti (with all of its faults). The regular Yeti is far superior to both in my opinion.
