2011 bottling

Appearance: Pours a pitch black color; the dark mocha head is rather small but leaves legs of lace behind

Smell: Chocolate, vanilla and subtle wafts of Bourbon; alcohol detected in the aroma

Taste: After a chocolate fudge opening, the subtle Bourbon flavors blossom on the tongue, with the hops making their presence felt by mid-palate; the barrel flavors build, after the swallow, with quite a bit of oak in the finish

Mouthfeel: Full bodied, with low to moderate carbonation

Overall: This beer has been on my radar for a while so I was shocked to see it on the shelves at Bestway today; really lives up to the billing as a top drawer barrel-aged stout but, of course, I would expect nothing less from the folks at Great Divide

750ml capped bottle into a snifter - 2011 Vintage

A: Pours dark as motor oil with a nice dark brown head that fades to a ring and leaves some lacing on the glass.

S: The nose is very dark chocolate, earthy hops, slight vanilla, and dark blackstrap molasses. Very interesting nose and unlike any other beer I've ever smelled.

T: The taste has huge notes of dark chocolate, vanilla, milk sweetness, and molasses. There's a bit of a lacto/butter flavor which could suggest something amiss but I can't really tell...still tastes good to me.

M: The feel is thick and creamy with a huge oily finish.

O: The nose is a bit odd but the taste was good. The feel is about perfect for the style as well. As it warmed there was a buttery smell and flavor that got worse and worse. Kinda tasted like infected BA Token.

A- Black with dark brown around the edges. Very little head and lacing. 4.5/5

S- Chocolate, dates, and an alcohol twang. 4.5/5

T- Dark chocolate, more on the sweet side than the bitter side. Dark fruits abound. Some bitterness at the very end. 4.5/5

M- Very thick. Coats your mouth. Low carbonation. 4.5/5

O- I didn't think I would get to try this, but santa was very good to me. Damn good Imperial Stout. 4.5/5

750 ml bottle received in the White Whale 4 BIF, 2009 bottle if I'm not mistaken. Bottle 33/1104. Opened a few days before the year 2012.

It pours dark brown, nearly black, with a mocha-colored foam. In other words it looks like Yeti stout. The aroma is special though, lots of whiskey. Sweet and roasted malts behind that of course. It's very tasty, loads of bourbon flavor without any heat. Not as sweet as Eclipse, also a little thicker than Eclipse (an easy comparison as so many Eclipse variations just came out).

Very solid but not really any more special than more accessible BA stouts such as BA BORIS. Nevertheless I was glad for the chance to try it.

2011 bottle into a snifter.

Opaque, nothing could shine through this black body. Small dark brown head upon pour that moves into a ring around the edges of various sized bubbles and some swirling on the surface. Definite legging, minimal lacing.

Baker's chocolate, heavy roast espresso, and whiskey on the nose at first. None overpowering the other or offensive. As it warms vanilla and oak become a bit more apparent with sweeter dark chocolate notes. Becomes a bit hot on the alcohol as it warms.

Roast, sweet yet rich baker's chocolate, and whiskey again. A little bit of oak, vanilla, and molasses. The roast, chocolate, and barrel are exceptionally balanced. Does not deviate from the nose much at all.

Thick with almost no carbonation, sticky.

Wonderful balance between the barrel, beer, and heat on this. A real work of art. Great beer and if you have the chance, I suggest picking this up. They are still reasonable on the bay.

A - darkness, 1cm of dark chocolate head, a few legs.

S - chocolate covered oak. espresso, dark chocolate, vanilla, and oak.

T - more of the smell. decadent and delicious.

M - light carbonation with a creamy mouthfeel.

O - Spot on BA stout that is easier to get than ever. Wish I had another bottle

This one was recommended and without knowing how strong it was. A sipper in deed.

Poured Black. Not much tan head, but lace did ring. Didnt get to see any cascade but im sure it did.

Aroma of burnt malts, coffee and alcohol.

Taste is true expresso, burnt grinds, toast and slight alcohol backnote.

Mouthfeel is what got me. Alot of burnt bitterness and lingering old coffee taste washed down by booze. Thats not all a bad thing, it just made it a harder drinker esp. when you don't give yourself ample time to take in all this beer offers.

Overall drinkable as a sipper indeed. Yes I did take the time to finish every Yeti drop.

I poured it into my Stone IRS glass

A-Pitch black, mocha colored head which dissipates quickly leaving a thick ring of foam. There was some slight cascading.

S-Molasses, espresso, dark chocolate, alcohol, brown sugar, and whiskey. The whiskey was not as prominent as expected.

T-Dark chocolate, espresso, whiskey, oak, vanilla, and a rather large alcohol punch. The alcohol provided some nice warming. This beer's flavor dramatically increases as it warms up.

M-Thick and chewy. One of the thickets mouthfeels I've experienced. It was really great.

D-A true sipper given its complexity and high abv.

Overall, this didn't quite live up to my expectations. However, it was still a great beer and I am glad I was able to experience it.

A: Black in color. Thick and viscous. Forms a small very dark tan brownish colored head that eventually reduces to a surface coating.

S: The aroma is off and I find it somewhat unappetizing. Oak, vanilla, roasted malts, and whiskey. But it comes off as smelling somewhat dirty.

T: Taste is similar to the aroma, but with the addition of coffee, deeply roasted malts, molasses and a light sweetness.

M: Heavy bodied with lighter carbonation.

O: A good RIS, but just not one that I personally cared for very much.

2011 vintage shared by cbutova, awesome surprise beer.

Looks like all other yetis, black body, nice brown head retains well and leaves lacing.

Chocolate, roast, whiskey, vanilla in the nose.

Taste is excellent. Big chocolate syrup, roasted malt, vanilla, whiskey, caramel and some oak and a bit of alcohol. Just awesome, great balance, slightly dessert-like but not sweet.

Slick mouthfeel, good amount of carbonation, some booze but not bad considering, pretty easy drinking, great flavor.

Even next to a plethora of great stouts, this was probably the best of the night for me and that opinion seemed unanimous. This is exactly how I'd hope a Barrel Aged Yeti would turn out, base beer still recognizable and in tact with a great whiskey barrel presence without being overpowering. Probably one of the best bourbon barrel stouts I've had, the price is a damn shame though.

Perhaps the darkest beer I've poured. Slight head with decent retention. Good lacing.

The aroma is some of the smoothest barrel aging I've seen yet.
The regular yeti is faintly detectable beneath it, but it stands up to the bourbon as well as you could expect from most imperial stouts.

The flavor is like a yeti toned down slightly with a very smooth bourbon aging. I don't understand how people think it's hot. I think it's the best of the yetis but I think the espresso isn't far behind.

The body is nicely done. It's very creamy with a decent body. The finish is moderately dry with a slight booze stickiness.

Overall, it was perhaps the nicest of the yetis. I think given the chance I'd drink this as fresh as possible. The 2011 was very smooth.

Falling Rock Tap House in Colorado had three of these in the fridge... soo pumped. I grabbed one and shared at the bar with my dad and a couple other random guys. Gave myself a solid 15 ounce pour.

A: Nice black body with a brown creamy head

S: Whiskey, chocolate, hops, coffee... amazing.

T: Same as the smell. Amazing beer.

M: So rich, cream, smooth... fantastic.

O: The bartender gave me a sample of the whiskey that it's barrel aged in... what a great beer and I didn't even have to wait in line.

Pours a dark viscous black with a bubbly tan head. The nose has lots of wood, notes of dark chocolate, light hints of smoke meat, and some sweet malts. The flavor has lots of wood again, a litte boozy and hot, notes of malt and ashy chocolate with lots of sugar. More heat in the finish with a mdium to full body, syrupy and light carbonation. Singular and overly sweet with a bit too much heat.

2011 bottle, out of SN XXX tulip.

A- Pitch black with a tannish brown head. The head is pretty healthy for a beer of this nature, as is the lacing.

S- Pretty hot an boozy, mostly with notes of whiskey and a bit of peat. Prodominantly chocolate, and dark roasted malt.

T- Very smooth and creamy at first, which changes up to a burnt malt and chocolate flavor. Notes of coffee, whiskey, and oak/peat as well. Really not sure if these are the best barrels for this beer, though I prefer bourbon barrels.

M- A little thinner than I expected, especially with Yeti typically being pretty thick. The flavor is nice and complex.

O- Overall this is a very good barrel aged beer, though I was expecting more. I think the barrel selection isn't my favorite, and it needs the Yeti thickness. Not bad at all though.

750ml bottle, poured into a Weyerbacher tulip. Thanks to the generous soul who shared this at CdC.

A: Opaque black body, red-brown highlights, and a momentary cap of creamy brown foam. Sticky lace. Intense.

S: Big, bold, and boozy. Whiskey, coconut, coffee, dark chocolate, and earthiness. Lovely.

T: Follows the nose, deliciously. Terrific coconut, oak, whiskey, dark fruit, coffee, and chocolate. Boozy, coffee-laden finish. Great.

M: Thick, highly carbonated, and creamy. A little prickly, but good.

O: Wow, now that's a serious stout. Major barrel presence, and yet plenty of malt to stand up to it. I'd love to sit down with a bottle of this on a cold winter's night, and just sip on it for hours.

A: Pow! From the first drop, it's easy to tell that this dark wonder is gonna coat the glass and then some. Motor oil, anyone? A standard pour yields a dense, 1.5 finger creamy mocha head.

S: Extremely vinous. Not much wood or smoke is picked up, moreover it's compact dark fruit.

T: The flavor profile is quite similar to the nose. I don't really get a whole bunch of tannin or char. Instead I'm getting a lot of chocolate, the 40% dark kind. The finish is yet again a bit vine fruity.

M: Right on target. Rich, thick, creamy and so forth. Know what a killer stout feels like? Ok then.

O: Not quite the beer I was expecting. Great Divide's Barrel Aged Yeti is certainly a good beer, it's just packing a ton of dark fruit that, with age, might dissipate. Though I found this more then enjoyable, there are certainly better limited release RIS's out worth hunting.

Big bottle purchased by colleague at The Bobolink, The Big, OR., $10, October 2010 bottling.

Dark brown head, a bit uneven bubbles, fairly slow dissipation with significant lacing on top of uber-dark brown opaque body, no visible carbonation. Huge frickin' dark chocolate hit in the nose, re +70% cocoa, citrusy and floral hops for balance. Taste mirrors nose, really chocolatey, hops are absolutely subsumed by the huge chocolate malt profile. Mouthfeel is on the full side of medium, some effervescence but not too much. Not sure this is the most drinkable of beers, definitely worth splitting a bottle, palate wrecker to be sure. Worth a try for fans of big ass chocolate stouts. Wondering if I shouldn't seek out that Stranahan's barrel aged version...

Poured from 750ml bottle into red wine glass at Black Friday tasting.

Aroma: Molasses, vanilla, malted milk, toasted coconut, and rich dark chocolate syrup. Wonderfully complex aroma!

Appearance: 1 finger dark brown head slowly dissipates. Body is dark espresso brown/black. The beer leaves some suds behind, from which decent legs run.

Flavor: Mmmm! Rich fudge brownie, bourbon, coconut, and toasted marshmallow, followed by a nice touch of smoke at the end. OUT OF THIS WORLD flavor!

Mouthfeel: Medium carbonation, medium-full body, and slightly drying cocoa tannins at the end. Booze provides some nice warmth as well.

Overall: Due to the seeming ubiquity of many of the other Yeti variants (they seem to be slow movers at many of my favorite shops), I didn't get as excited about this one as I should have. Upon hearing some buzz, and reading reviews, though, I fortunately sought it out in a trade. And, thanks to the above credited trader, I was able to procure one! BA Yeti edged-out Sculpin, Blushing Monk, Marshall Zhukov's, and even Black Tuesday, in the line-up of beers at our Black Friday tasting. Great Divide really did something special here. I'll definitely be looking for another one!

2011 batch (aged for 9 months in Stranahan's whiskey barrels) poured into a snifter. Bottle #2704 - 10.7% ABV. The last time I tried this beer was when the first batch was released. It's been a long time.

A: Appears ebony, exhibiting a level of viscosity that would make a rheologist gape in wonder. The head forms two fingers of Sepia froth. Great looking beer.

S: I get caramel with a lot of roast and a light coffee presence. There's some fusel alcohol that stings the nostrils but it's faint. Whiskey is aromatic and pleasant, blending with vanilla and oak - there's a lot of oak. Dark fruit is restrained.

T: Lightly bitter up front with notes of earth, dark chocolate, and cocoa. I get a little caramel with accompanying fudge. The Stranahan's whiskey barrels provide notes of whiskey and vanilla, and malt effects a strong roasted characteristic with subtle burnt notes. Brown sugar appears midpalate and grows stronger in the caramel fudge whiskey finish. Alcohol is well masked until the finish.

M: Full in body with upper medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is silky with pleasant alcohol warming.

Overall: This is certainly a good barrel aged Imperial Stout, but it isn't in the upper tier. I'd definitely purchase a glass of it if offered the chance, but I wouldn't buy another bottle.

2011 Vintage - 750 ML - Bottle #789

Poured this into a brandy snifter.

Appearance: Pours a thick, dark brown. Like syrup, it sticks to the glass. A limited amount of carbonation.

Smell: Smells of raisins and dark chocolate. A bit of fresh whiskey notes can also be had. I don't get the vanilla.

Taste: It tastes of fresh raisins and has a bit of whiskey bite to it, which is a result of the barrel aging. The chocolate flavors come through towards the end of each sip. It needs some time to mellow out in the bottle, but is still a great beer.

Mouth: A medium bodied stout. A slight whiskey burn upfront and lasting chocolate silkiness at the end.

Overall: Great beer and I can't wait to see where cellaring takes this beer in a year or two. I'll be interested in tasting this down the road with the Stranahan's barrels no longer being used.

2011 vintage, bottle #1904. With this bottle, I have finally finished my trek through all of the Yeti variants (that I know of, anyway...). I feel closer to complete than before... Anyway, this stuff pours a straight obsidian topped by a finger of sienna foam. Yeah, it's good-looking, but somehow not as attractive as some of the other variants... The nose comprises whiskey, light oak, cocoa, roasted malts, maple syrup, and molasses. The taste brings in more of the same, along with more chocolate and some light red grape notes. The body is a hefty-leaning medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fairy rich feel. Overall, a damn fine stout, one that utilizes the barrel-aging very well (unsurprising). Good times.

A: Straight black pour, like motor oil, with a small very brown head. No lacing or retention. If it had better lacing or retention it would be a 5.

T: The smell is all booze and whiskey, some chocolate underneath.

T: The taste on this is the best part. Great blend of chocolate, roastiness, booze, whiskey, oak and vanilla from the barrel. Alcohol and roastiness on the back. Balance is perfect as it warms.

MF: Thick and heavy, a little under carbonated, but not as much as BA Old Ruffian. Dry finish and boozy.

O: I Really enjoyed this. I was worried after having BA Old Ruffian earlier and it was way passed it's prime. This was tasty, full of stout and whiskey. Very much enjoyed.

2008 vintage opened by ipa247.

A: Pours a near black color with raisin highlights beneath a thin dark brown head.
S: Smooth notes of vanilla, light woody barrel and oak scents, and a bite of bourbon and creamy chocolate.
T: Crazy smooth flavors of raisins, marshmallows, chocolate and vanilla with a very mild hint of warm bourbon in the finish. The aftertaste is sweet and full of raisins.
M: Full thick body, incredibly soft mouthfeel with soft carbonation, and very integrated and smooth alcohol that is a just a tiny bit warming.
O: I have a bottle of 2011 vintage that I was thinking about opening but after having this I can see it’s worth the wait. An overall thick and chewy stout.

EDIT: 2011 is an infected mess. Sour cherries galore. Damn you.

App- “Is that molasses” asks Gurudels wife. No its not. Its a rich dark deep brown, bordering on black with a good sheen. It was lush, rich and thick in the glass with a two finger slow receding brown head. Like a frothy brown craterous whip cream. Great sticky cling, A very good looking stout.

Smell- A little bit of bitter dark chocolate roasted notes with a stinging fresh whiskey note. The malt and grain are somewhat hidden behind these two other aromatics. On big whiffs its just the whiskey. Missing a key vanilla/oak note.

Taste- Takes a bit of time for this to mellow in the glass. Its not the biggest at 10% but its assertive at points with the booze coming though first and foremost. The chocolate comes next with a little bit of plum and dark fruit layering. A good grain bill retains itself from the base Yeti. The whiskey flavors add a depth of flavor akin to a peat or some moss.

Mouth- A good low bodied stout with a low-medium carbonation. I think they nailed the feel of this stout with some rich smoothness and a touch of whiskey burn and chocolate on the finish. A bit silky. Well done.

Drink- This was a very good treatment for a big favorite of mine. I like the way they went with a homer Whiskey treatment. It added a certain smoothness with some heat, smoke and grain feel. I would like to see a couple more bottles of this one or one with some age already on it. Highly recommend this one.

Reviewed from notes. 750ml bottle shared with some friends over the weekend. It poured pitch black in color with a thin tan head sticking mostly to the edges of the glass. It looked very thick and still in the glass. Pretty inviting appearance for the style.

The aroma has a big dark and bitter-sweet chocolate presence to it. I get some roasty coffee notes mixing with a little burnt bitterness as well. The bourbon is moderate, but very complimenting. The bourbon, oak and vanilla flavors really integrate well into it.

The taste has more of the dark chocolate and roasty bitterness coming out up front. In the finish is where I get more of the bourbon with some oak, vanilla and a little alcohol heat. Like the aroma, the bourbon barrel characteristics really compliment the big chocolaty, roasty coffee flavor profile of the base beer without overpowering it at all.

The mouthfeel is thick and heavy with carbonation being low. Great mouthfeel for my tastes in the style. Overall I thought it was a great beer. I really liked that the base beer shined through and the bourbon barrel flavors complimented instead of dominated. Great range of flavors to it overall and I'm sure it helps that I love the base beer to begin with.
