Beautiful black pour with a dark mocha finger and a half of viscous head. Nice spattering of lacy foam. Balanced barrel, oak, vanilla and rich chocolate in the aroma. There may be some spicy hops, but faint. The barrel is not over whelming, which for me, is a good thing. It leaves it's mark though. There's a slight acidic cherry quality that faintly shows itself. The taste is lightly boozy, with a ton of chocolate, roast, vanilla, light barrel/bourbon and oaky notes. It finishes with a bit of a chocolate covered cherry and a definite acidity that induces a slight puckering affect. The feel was thick, full and coating...as I would expect from the Yeti.

It appears as though this bottle is on the very mild receiving end of some infectious qualities. While I think it undoubtedly made the experience slightly less enjoyable, this was still a really good beer even still. No doubt a non-infectious bottle would be brilliant. Glad to be drinking it either way!

2011 Vintage. Bottle number 2428, not infected.

A - Black. 1 finger of brown head, nice tight bubbles.

S - Oak, whisky.

T - Whisky/booze, chocolate, molasses, hint of hops, a ton of wood in the finish.

M - Medium. Very smooth carbonation, almost seems bottle conditioned.

Not my favorite of the Yeti variations (oak aged) but comes in a close second.

Poured from bottle - black; yielded a sliver of mocha head that quickly dissipated with a carbonated fizz like soda. Aroma is bourbon and oak. Taste is the same, with bitter, dark chocolate as well. Feel is medium bodied - on the thinner side. Overall, not as good as expected. I was hoping for a thicker mouthfeel here and alcohol is a bit strong in this, especially on the finish. It also lacks a touch of sweetness to balance it off. Perhaps if I were more of a bitter dark chocolate fan I'd love this beer, but alas I am not. Much prefer the Chocolate Yeti to this one, especially when this one was $24.

Vintage 2011.
Bottle # 1703.

poured into snifter glass.

Appearance: Black bodied beer with a dark brown 1 finger head that drops down quickly into a ring around the top of the beer. Average lacing.

Smell: Lots of whiskey. Smoke and dark roasty malts.

Taste: Dominant whiskey barrel notes. Mostly the oaky and woody notes. Smoke and charcoal. The rest of the beer is muted by the whiskey, smoke and charcoal. The beer is fairly roasty too, but it shows up in the finish. Almost has a minor sourness in the finish along side the roasty notes.

Mouthfeel: The unique part of the beer to me is the mouthfeel. Strong whiskey notes that you can taste, but none of the whiskey burn. This Yeti is really smooth, but I still prefer the other Yeti's that get Oaked because the mouthfeels is thicker. This seems just a bit thinner than I expected. Medium bodied beer with a low end of meoderate carbonation.

Overall: I have officially tried all the Yeti offerings. I expected this one to be the best, but I was wrong! I really liked the Expresso Oak and Chocolate Oak better than BA Yeti. Lets see what a year can do to this beer. Aged may help it become a better beer!

This review is of the 2009 vintage

Pours a pitch black body with a one finger mocha head. Head retention and lacing were average at best.

Smell is an amazing mixture of sweet whisky, brownie a la mode, vanilla, burnt malts, and chocolate syrup. Similar to aromas found in Southern Tiers Choklat but heavier on alcohol.

Taste is still hot and big on booze, with some fudge, charred malts, and a bit of bitterness. I like strong beers but this one lacks some balance to round it out. Wish it tasted like it smelled.

Mouthfeel is full and aggressively carbonated. Body was somewhat oily/syrupy. Head died rather quickly which was disappointing.

Overall this beer was good but pretty pricey. I figured after letting it age for 4 years it would be smoother but it still has quite a bite. I love all the yetis but I'd have to say this was prolly my least favorite along with Belgian yeti

A: Insanely black with very dark brown head. Gorgeous stout. Looks like very strong coffee.

S: Chocolate and oak. Lots of tangy/sour oak character and coffee. Reminds me of good french press. Earthy.

T: Wood, wood, wood, sour fruitiness, big time roast, cocoa, VERY oak forward. That oak tanginess is a bit much for my liking.

M: Full and smooth. Interesting balance between rich dark malt and sour wood.

On tap @ Churchill's "Night of the Yeti" during SDBW. Reviewed from notes.

A: Pours black with few bubbles around the rim and no lace.

N: Sweetish whiskey booze is evident. Like a chocolate brownie soaked in whiskey.

T: Mildly sweet, vanilla present with some oaky notes and dark chocolate, grainy/malty.

M: Full body and light carbonation. Slick and oily roasted finish.

O: Aside from the low carbonation, this was very enjoyable.

2011 Vintage - 750 ML - Bottle #789

Poured this into a brandy snifter.

Appearance: Pours a thick, dark brown. Like syrup, it sticks to the glass. A limited amount of carbonation.

Smell: Smells of raisins and dark chocolate. A bit of fresh whiskey notes can also be had. I don't get the vanilla.

Taste: It tastes of fresh raisins and has a bit of whiskey bite to it, which is a result of the barrel aging. The chocolate flavors come through towards the end of each sip. It needs some time to mellow out in the bottle, but is still a great beer.

Mouth: A medium bodied stout. A slight whiskey burn upfront and lasting chocolate silkiness at the end.

Overall: Great beer and I can't wait to see where cellaring takes this beer in a year or two. I'll be interested in tasting this down the road with the Stranahan's barrels no longer being used.

Poured from the bottle an opaque jet black color, with a thin collar of cappuccino colored foam. A whole lot going on in the nose here--bourbon, vanilla, cocoa beans, licorice and alcohol. On the palate I got a lot of bourbon, which is a bit overpowering. Also some vanilla, dark chocolate, dark fruit and roasted malts. Alcohol is very evident and very warming. A nice effort.

A: Black in color. Thick and viscous. Forms a small very dark tan brownish colored head that eventually reduces to a surface coating.

S: The aroma is off and I find it somewhat unappetizing. Oak, vanilla, roasted malts, and whiskey. But it comes off as smelling somewhat dirty.

T: Taste is similar to the aroma, but with the addition of coffee, deeply roasted malts, molasses and a light sweetness.

M: Heavy bodied with lighter carbonation.

O: A good RIS, but just not one that I personally cared for very much.

Served chilled in a Founders snifter. Supposed to be the most recent batch. Tasting notes.

Smells of sweet malts with the slightest amount of barrel coming towards the end. Really needed to fight to find the barrel. Looks beyond fantastic. Nice rising head that recedes into good retention. Black with fantastic legs. Flavors are of sweet dark malts with a slight roast, light hop backbone and then some non-dominating whiskey in the finish. Good body.

I'm not convinced that this was a recent batch based on the sweet malt presence. I have no other experience with this beer though, so I can't say for sure.

Appearance: Deep, dark brown - nicely sized, creamy, tan head - fades to a few wisps of a cap, nice ring that lasts forever, leaves a few nice spots

Smell: Chocolate and bourbon, in some semblance of balance - dark chocolate, baker's chocolate, and coffee - a strong bourbon presence, with some wood, vanilla, and booze - somewhat backed up by the malts - roasty, burnt

Taste: It's like mocha, with bourbon - bourbon and wood are in the front and quite potent, and actually become more intense as it warms (suboptimal) - dark chocolate - lightly burnt malts - roasty coffee - vanilla - malty and vanilla sweetness, a bit too sweet

Mouthfeel: On the light side of full body, smooth, with a lot of heat at the end

Overall: Yeti in a barrel, slightly more interesting than a barrel of monkeys

I should probably stop drinking bourbon barrel aged beers. I haven't really enjoyed one in a while. This issue notwithstanding, I can appreciate this beer. The Yeti base is strong enough to hold up to the bourbon. And this isn't a wood bomb like Oak Aged Yeti.

This was the last beer in the tasting during the beer extravaganza weekend. After a night of drinking phenomenal beers, this one did not disappoint. Bottle 290 of 470.

A: Flat black color, just like a good Russian Imperial Stout should be. There is a creamy film of dark head that forms on top of the beer as it cascades in an almost syrupy appearance from the 750mL bottle.

S: For a barrel aged beer, I expected more bourbon and whiskey notes. Otherwise, this nose was packed full, though it left me slightly disappointed at the lack of bourbon/whiskey. Strong roasted malts and toffee notes are extremely evident up front. As I move my nose closer to the head to get a better smell, not only do I almost get beer up my nose, but I find a delightful chocolate character that goes very nicely with the toffee.

T: Roasted malts dominate the beginning of the flavor profile. Oakey and vanilla flavors from the barrel aging manifest themselves in a slightly understated way, but that understatedness is perfect, because it doesn't take away from the rest of the beer. Hops are present, but are very mild. The whiskey shows up if you look for it, adding a nice character, but not making itself a focal point. Again, would have liked a bit more whiskey flavor, but the beer was phenomenally balanced and very very good.

M/D: Very smooth from the beginning through the finish. Thick and heavy, this beer is a very good offering from Great Divide. The low drinkability rating may be hurt by the fact that this was 5th on a stellar lineup of beers, but I highly recommend this very highly regardless.

2011 vintage. Split with angrybabboon.

Appearance: Thick pour. Small cinnamon colored head drops to a small bubbly cap. No lacing to speak of. Minimal carbonation.

Smell: Rich, roasted burnt malts. Sweet, deeply cooked malts. Bourbon adds some nice layers of oak and vanilla with touches of toffee. Pushes toward brown sugar at times. Some cocoa and milk chocolate. Nibs. Bourbon heat stays on top of everything else. Chocolate cake and dark ripe cherry. Almost like a bourbon soaked brownie.

Taste: Bourbon and fudge. Cocoa and chocolate. Homemade caramel with vanilla. Crazy roasted malts. A touch of burnt. Some char. Vaguely smoky. Raisin. So much chocolate and bourbon. Oak. Woody and a touch earthy. Some citrus in the back. Fudge and cake. It's magically a dessert beer. Dark cherry in the back.

Mouthfeel: Thick body. Minimal carbonation. Surprisingly clean on the finish.

Overall: Still searching for the elusive Sasquatch.

A standout use of whiskey barrels. A solid base beer and mellow whiskey influence. Not really an improvement on the original.

2009 bottle, opened at TN whales tasting 3/16/2013.

Pours dark black, creamy coffee colored head but not a lot of it.

Smells of tangy sweet fruit, caramel and vanilla, a bit of bourbon, something slighty grassy that I imagine is from faded hops.

Taste is fudgy but light, wood and caramel, that mild grassy character again.

Nicely carbed for a big BA stout, body is a little thinner than I'd like but still good.

This is a good beer but pretty disappointing to me. I'm a huge fan of regular Yeti with a few years on it, and I've been enjoying the hell out of my last few bottles of 2008 Yeti, so I figured this would be phenomenal. But oddly I get more faded hop character from the BA version, and less of the delicious mellow maltiness.

This one was recommended and without knowing how strong it was. A sipper in deed.

Poured Black. Not much tan head, but lace did ring. Didnt get to see any cascade but im sure it did.

Aroma of burnt malts, coffee and alcohol.

Taste is true expresso, burnt grinds, toast and slight alcohol backnote.

Mouthfeel is what got me. Alot of burnt bitterness and lingering old coffee taste washed down by booze. Thats not all a bad thing, it just made it a harder drinker esp. when you don't give yourself ample time to take in all this beer offers.

Overall drinkable as a sipper indeed. Yes I did take the time to finish every Yeti drop.

fudgy chocolate syrup nose, no perceived barrel character; deep tan head quickly fades to light lace, light roast and ash flavor, balanced to bitterness, big very prominent alcohol flavor, not hot, burnt raisins, medium light body. Overall a very nice beer, but I feel the alcohol flavor imparted by the barrel or the higher ABV overwhelmed a lot of what makes Yeti a pretty phenomenal beer.

750ml capped brown bottle poured into a snifter. Notes.

A: Very dark brown with ruby reddish tinting. No real head with some large frothy bubbles from an aggressive pour. No real lacing, either.

S: Some light whiskey notes. Light molasses with a small touch of vanilla. A bit of roasty bitterness.

T/M: Lots of bourbon, more stinging than flavorful. Nothing from the barrel character and no real vanilla. Some bitterness from the dark roasted malts. Very thin body, especially for a RIS. Very little carbonation.

D: ABV is big and bourbon is too aggressive. Tasty, especially if you drink bourbon straight up, but too much in a beer, though.

Bottle 707/1104. Poured into a Delirium Tremens tulip.

Half inch dark beige head the dies down to a ring of foam with some specs of foam in the middle of the surface. Oily legs and some lacing left behind. Pitch black body.

Lots of spicy oak. Smells of rich dark fruits like cherries, raisins and plumbs. A touch of chocolate and then some wet cardboard oxidation in there as well. The beer doesn't smell all that strong.

Tastes of tons of dark fruits (cherries/raisins/figs/plumbs) up front. Then there are some whispers of dark chocolate that are immediately taken over by vanilla, oak and bourbon. There is also some piney hoppiness and an unpleasant wet cardboard note suggesting some oxidation. Luckily the wet cardboard note is pretty faint.

The mouthfeel on this one is quite thick and a touch syrupy. Coating. Good carbonation. Some heat as well.

Pretty good drinkability.

Yes, this is the barrel aged variant. Not the oak aged.

BOTTLE: 2011 vintage. 750ml brown glass with a foil-ed over pry-off pressure cap. Cost was $29.00. Bottle #1687. 10.7% ABV.

Expectations are high given this beer's reputation, and the fact that it's currently #14 on the Top 50 Colorado list. Served cold into a stem-tulip. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: Dark tan colour. Nice creaminess and thickness. Retention is horrible - maybe 30 seconds at best. Leaves no lacing on the sides of the glass as it recedes.

BODY: Opaque solid ink-black. No light penetrates. No yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.

Appears aptly-carbonated. Not unique or special for an imperial stout, but it looks good for the style. A fuller longer lasting creamier head would be nice, but they've got the darkness of head colour dialed in nicely.

AROMA: Grape, dark malts, chocolate malts, plum, and prune. I struggle to find any oak - or subsidiary vanilla or whiskey spiciness - but can't. It seems with three years of age the barrel has disappeared - at least in the aroma. It's sweet, with the grape dominating.

A pleasant aroma of average strength.

No yeast character or off-notes are detectable.

TASTE: Dominant grape. Subsidiary plum and prune. Dark malts. Chocolate malt. Raisin.

Any barrel character is extremely reticent. I wouldn't know this was barrel aged if I tried it blind. No oak, vanilla, whiskey spiciness, or barrel sugars. No marshmallow. Not even any char or burnt characteristics. Where's that Stranahan's character I know and love?

There's no coffee, no rich chocolate, no vanilla bean...this is a boring flavour profile for an imperial stout. It just doesn't bring much complexity/intricacy, nuance, or subtlety to the table, and in this style you've got to. Depth of flavour is merely average. Average duration and intensity of flavour.

I rarely cry infection, but the tartness in the third act and the unexpected grape notes make me think it's a distinct possibility. Blakelive784 notes an accompanying lactic acid presence which I second.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, creamy, full-bodied, thick, and syrupy without coming off too viscous or overbearing. Carbonation is apt. It could be softer.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, harsh, rough, or scratchy. Unfortunately, it's slightly astringent, and right on the finish it's unnaturally dry and coarse, lending it an off-putting arid presence on the palate, extinguishing the joy of the beer.

OVERALL: Drinkable for its high ABV - which is barely noticeable. But as a Colorado boy, having heard about how this was the best of the Yetis for years, and seeing it always in a high position on the leaderboards, I expected an imperial stout with at least a great whiskey barrel presence, but this doesn't have even that. Maybe it's just the three years of age, but I'd almost say the Oak Aged Yeti evokes more of a barrel character. In spite of the grapey infection, I am enjoying it for what it is, but there's no way I'd pay the abominable price of $29.99 USD for this again. I'm reserving judgement and would like to try it without the infection, but I'm forced to rate as-is. That said, I think it's a testament to the quality of the beer that even with noticeable infection it still earns a B from me.

Serve cold; the obnoxious dryness on the finish grows more noticeable as it comes to temperature.

2015 vintage on-tap @ Great Divide.

This is more what I was after! Has a great chocolatey core with brilliant notes of cream and marshmallow underscored by Subtle (if not reticent) white oak barrel character. There's no bourbony vanilla or toastiness, but the oak is nice - definitely a step above oak aged yeti. I find none of whiskey's signature spiciness.

750ml bottle (2011 vintage - bottle #2542) poured into a Brooklyn snifter. Supposed to be infected, but we will see.

A - Pours thick and syrupy with a pitch black color and a short finger of a deep, milk chocolatey brown head. A bit fizzy and the head dies quickly leaving a thick ring around the glass...first signs of infection?

S - Lots of whiskey up front, sweet caramelly and molasses base, pruney dark fruits, dark roasted malts. Quite boozy overall with sharp alcoholic aroma. Really no sign of infection here...maybe this is one of the good bottles.

T - Nope...Tart up front with the feared infection starting to take hold. Sour cherries backed firmly by smooth whiskey and followed by a very healthy dose of char and smoked malt. Vanilla, sweet molasses and some burnt caramel can be found too. Infection has certainly left its mark and detracts from the overall. Not undrinkable, but certainly not living up to what this beer is supposed to be.

M - Super thick body...one of the more syrupy beers I've had, even with the infection which typically tends to thin out a beer. Carbonation is lowish but plenty for the style and shows just enough life to be interesting. Tart infection detracts and gives a somewhat puckering quality to the beer.

O - Was hoping to get lucky with this one, but figured I wouldn't. Infection hurts this one a lot, but hasn't made it undrinkable. Certainly keeps this from performing up to its expectations tho. I'm continuing to drink this...not sure I'll finish the whole bottle. Oh well...have to try again when this gets released again.

Pours a dark viscous black with a bubbly tan head. The nose has lots of wood, notes of dark chocolate, light hints of smoke meat, and some sweet malts. The flavor has lots of wood again, a litte boozy and hot, notes of malt and ashy chocolate with lots of sugar. More heat in the finish with a mdium to full body, syrupy and light carbonation. Singular and overly sweet with a bit too much heat.

Pours black. Some coffe grounds, vanilla, bourbon. A lot of vanilla on the front palate, fairly smooth roasted coffee in the middle, then a ridiculously long, bitter finish. Finish on this was seriously awkward, showed some serious flaws next to much better bottles. In our tasting, the only bottle I scored below this was the Brandy Eclipse.

2011 Vintage Bottle # 1449

A - Poured into my Duvel tulip a deep dark brownish black hue with a good solid almost 2 finger deep milk chocolate head that fades to leave light side lacing and a nice thin cloud. Very nice.

S - Fearing infection I take a deep sniff. Ah, no sign of it! Nice bakers chocolate, slight roasty malts, and good whiskey notes. Not boozy at all just solid whiskey aroma. Faint barrel as well. Again, quite solid.

T - FUCK. Pretty sure I'm getting some infection here as my first taste is....sour! Damnit. Tastes like chocolate covered cherries, some wine notes. Not getting much whiskey at all. Fainter barrel notes but yeah, this is very infected. The nose trolled me.

M - Mouthfeel is nicely carbonated albeit a bit on the sharp side.

O - Overall I knew there was a risk with this bottle, still I could not smell any hints of it then I take a sip and WHAM, disappointment. Oh well, looking forward to revisiting this considering I just drain poured this whole bottle.

A: poured black in color with a little dar brown head that left very little lacing sticking to the glass.

S: plenty of whiskey in the aroma with lots of caramel signs of going infected with tart character but did manage to detect brown sugar.

T: like I suspected it is going infected which the tart character gave away alongside lots of booze oaky notes, some caramel but it was definitely infected.

M: the brew was medium in body with fair amount of carbonation which had infected qualities all around.

O: I honestly wish I had a tasty bottle to drink like most of the people who gave this beer a great rating; oh well.
