Pours dark brown, basically black, almost opaque with some ruby highlights sneaking through when held up to the light. About a one inch thick, rocky head lasts quite well.
Aroma is dark roasted malts, with a touch of coffee, and semi-sweet dark chocolate. Oak makes an appearance, but isn't the star of the show in the aroma. Maybe slight alcohol note in the background, but not much.
Flavor is dark roasted malt, dark chocolate, with typical oak and vanilla notes you would expect from an oak aged ale. Definately a kick of spicey heat comes through in the aftertaste, which is enough to punch out any possible alcohol notes. Not much hop bitterness comes out, but a little bit of a dark chocolate bitter bite sneaks out in the end.
Medium-full body, moderate carbonation. Somewhat thick, but silky and smooth. Reminiscent of a Hershey's Dark Chocolate with Cocoa Nibs square, if they added some heat to the mix. Probably like something you would get in an offering from Vosqes-Haut. The heat is surprising and stays with you for a while, but gives this a unique twist. If I were to tweak it, I would turn down the heat just a little, and let the chocolate come out more. Certainly worth sampling again.

A. Dark, dark brown, nearly black. An aggressive pour yielded a small amber head that retreats to a minimal film. No laces.
S. Chocolate, coffee, neutral oak, dark roasted malts all at noticeable levels. Hints of vanilla. Mild aroma.
T. The taste follows the nose consistently. A noticeable bitterness, not at all sweet. Major notes of coffee, dark malts, neutral oak, and some hops. No booze. A moderately bitter ale.
M. Moderately smooth, moderate carbonation, medium body.
O. Very balanced and consistent. Excellent. Highly recommended.
