Notes/Commercial Description:
Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout is another revered incarnation of our legendary imperial stout. We toned down the hops a bit to allow cocoa nibs to contribute some pleasing bitterness, while vanilla notes from the oak combine with the cocoa to create an aroma and flavor akin to a gourmet chocolate bar. A dash of cayenne keeps things lively, adding just a bit of heat to the finish. Another great Yeti? Hell yes.

Appearance: It pours pitch black with a couple fingers of dark tan head. A small amount of lacing remains after it reduces down.

Smell: Dark roasted malts, and tons of chocolate are what come out first. I can also detect an woodiness and a good deal of coffee. Lots of strong scents in this beer. Very complex.

Taste: Wow, incredibly chocolaty. Lots of malt flavor as well. Some coffee as well as vanilla, with a touch of earthy woodiness. Chocolate is part of the name of this beer and it certainly lives up to that. For my taste, it's probably a bit too much chocolate.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability: Very full bodied with just a touch of carbonation. Very smooth in the mouth. The taste lingers a long time in the mouth after each swallow. Even with the amount of chocolate taste in this beer, it is still very complex and I can taste all the other flavors. I liked this beer quite a bit, and look forward to trying the other Yetis.

A: Pitch black oil colored body topped with a espresso crema colored head. Tons of lacing persists as the head dies down.

S: Espresso, raw cacao nibs, and a hint of vanilla. A bit of alcohol booziness and fresh baked brownies. No hint of the cayenne in the nose.

T: Unsweetened chocolate, bitter coffee, and astringent oak. Reminiscent of a dark chocolate covered espresso bean. Deep roasted malt, fudge, and a slight spicy burn from the cayenne builds as it warms.

M: Medium bodied, with an astringent finish both from the oak and the malts. Great, but definitely an emphasis on the tannic characteristics of heavily roasted grain and oak.

O: Great beer. Oak and chocolate are definite players, but are nowhere near as prominent as I expected. Despite that fact, the base beer itself is great, and the bits of complementary flavor the oak and cocoa nibs round out the flavor nicely.

A: The beer is as black as oil, with a dark brown head the color of chocolate milk. The head stands up nicely and leaves rings of lacing. The head has a very nice color to it. Quite impressive.

S: The scent coming from the glass doesn't travel very far so I have to get really close to smell anything. There's a slight spicy woody scent and it has a bit of roasted grain scent as well. Very faint aromas of both chocolate and coffee. It smells good but it is very very faint. The scent of hops and alcohol come out as the beer warms up.

T: Lots of roasted bitterness but not harshly bitter, just bitter like a mellow coffee. Bitter cocoa flavor and some charcoal at the back end of the tongue. Some earthy woody flavors, a bit spicy. I get some hop flavor and bitterness out of it as well. It's not a chocolate-forward flavored beer. The chocolate is more of a complementary ingredient to the beer. The roasted grain flavor and spicy earthy flavors seem to dominate more.

M: It's a rather bitter beer, but it doesn't linger too long on the palate. Good carbonation and a full body that finishes with a tad of astringency.

O: This is a really good imperial stout and it is enjoyable to drink. It has a great deal of bitterness but doesn't make it too difficult to drink. The focus of the flavor profile is on the beer itself and less on the supplementary ingredients like chocolate. The earthy flavors, whether from the oak alone, or in conjunction with the hops, overpowers the chocolate. If you enjoy regular or oak aged imperial stouts, this will be up your alley and I recommend it. If you are looking for a chocolate beer, this one is sure to bring you enjoyment, but will likely leave you wanting more chocolate. It is only a tease. I leave that to be your choice. I enjoyed the beer and while I do find it to be outstanding, I would probably seek out a different version of Yeti. The chocolate just wasn't present enough to warrant a name on the marquis, so to speak.

Poured from a 22oz bottle with a bottled on date of 3/18/14; into a pint glass.
Appearance - pours dark and thick like chocolate syrup. A huge, creamy brown head forms and leaves a ladder of lace!
Smell - cocoa, brownie mix, vanilla, oak and a hint of alcohol.
Taste - coffee, vanilla, cream and cayenne.
Feel - full and creamy body; the cayenne provides a very interesting and exciting bite, the bitterness from the chocolate adds an excellent touch and they both hide the 9.5% ABV!
Overall - GD does a great job with their Yeti series; so far, they all have a handful of unique differences that make them stand out!
