Poured from a 22-ounce bomber with a brewed-on date of 9/20/09 into a Saranac pint glass.
A: Poured a very hazy, bright burnt orange color with a massive head of tan color foam. Lacing is terrific and clarity is near-zero. Looks rich and mysterious.
S: Smells phenomenal! Loads of candied caramel malt, a good deal of whisky, burned wood and herbal hops. I loved just smelling the warmth of this beer.
T: Very rich and smoked malt flavor at first. Sticky sweet caramel malt and toffee flavors blend with the mellow smokiness of French and U.S. oak chips. Hints of vanilla and tobacco are noted as well. A slight alcoholic sting and zesty, floral hop bitterness flash up towards the boozy, bourbonesque finish. What a sipper.
M: Mouthfeel is full-bodied, sticky and sweet, but smooth and mellow as any brew I've ever had.
D: The 10% ABV goes essentially unnoticed, as time and oak aging on wood chips has mellowed the harsh alcohol compounds and hop acids. Just wish I could get my hands on another one of these guys; hope they brew a 20th-year as well! This was a real treat to sip on in the bitter cold winds around the campsite.

have a few of these in the cellar, time to break one out and see what's what...
2 fingers of snowy white head, sticky sticky sticky, this one leaves a bread crumb trail all the way down leaving no doubt where it has been, ample carbonation keeps the head well fed, lovely microbubble sheets roll around, nicely done, this is one good lookin' brewski
citrus and wood... who would have guessed? your first instinct is hops but the wood is definitely toning it down and adding something, there is a mellow booziness throughout, old orange rind, the nose is interesting but I don't love it, the hop florals kind of smelling like termite wood.
strange.. the flavor is of ashen wood with some bitterness, it is exceptionally smooth mouth wise but the flavor is throwing me a bit, some dark honey notes, there is just something off I can't quite place my finger on, perhaps this sat too long (bottled 7/2009).
this has lost it's kick imo, without a more assertive hop profile this kind of tastes like soaked wood, too bad, the look and feel of the brew is excellent.
