12 oz bottle poured into a snifter. Bottled on Aug 4 2010. consumed 11/19/10.
Pours a sticky, cloudy amber color with almost no foam. Very viscous. Aroma is very sweet, toffee, caramel.
First sip - overwhelmingly oaky. Vanilla. Toasted coconut. Very slick, oily mouthfeel.
There is a bit of lingering bitterness, but this beer is all about the oak. I was interested to see how an IPA would stand up to oaking... the oak dominates. Sadly, any hop flavor is lost in the shuffle. Drinkability suffers a bit because the oak flavor becomes a bit too much to handle.
Interesting, to say the least. I love to try experimental beers such as this. Would score better if it wasn't listed as an IPA.
EDIT - had again on 8/9/2011, bottled 6/15/2011. This one I enjoyed significantly more. More like an IPA. Tastes much hoppier, nice lingering bitterness, and oak is greatly subdued. Not sure if recipe or time on oak changed, but I'm upping my score a little bit based on this second bottle.
