Brewed with heavy handed additions of Pacific Northwest hops, this beer is gently aged on French and American oak resulting in a wonderful balance of bitterness, caramel sweetness, vanilla, and undertones of pine and citrus.

To start there is white stuff floating in my glass. Not sure whats up with that and it was an immediate turn off for this brew. Poured with very little head but did leave nice lacing down the sides of the glass. Nice subtle hop taste with a touch of citrus. Very orange centered beer we have here. i like the oak aging here though. It helps balance out the beer a lot. I can't stress how much the white stuff put me off about this beer but ill probably try it again since great divide is a good brewery.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a clearish copper color. The head is a finger high, with an off-white color and excellent texturing. Its creaminess retains acceptably.

S: This is interesting. I suppose it's better than me saying "LOLMALTY", but the oak aging gives it subtle touches of vanilla and oak - enough to pique my aforementioned interest. The primary malt backbone is actually fairly nutty (almost resembling a brown ale). Hops? Well, there's a twinge of pine floating around. This is oak-aged and not a fresh bottle, so this didn't stand a chance of showing off significant hoppiness.

T: Hops are here. They aren't vivid, they aren't defined, they just exist as a general finishing bitterness - there's even an acidic bite to it. The malt backbone is solid, bringing good caramel and nutty flavors. After half the glass, I pick up more of its oak aging. Its finish soon becomes quite vanilla-heavy. Works better as a strong ale, I think.

M: Full and creamy for an IPA, yet the tannic presence gives it some semblance of drinkability. Still, the long and caramel-laden finish makes this one a sipper. Carbonation is decent.

O: At first I didn't like it too much. But once that vanilla presence hits my tongue, I grow to respect it, if not love it. The caramel flavors get in the way just as I expected, and that's ultimately my main gripe with this beer (and a reminder that oak-aged IPAs are more of a novel experiment than a great style). GD almost turned an apocryphal design into a minor miracle, which at least earns them a couple brownie points.
