Poured from 22 oz bomber dated 3/18/11 into an IPA glass
A - Dark orange with 3 finger think soapy, slightly orange tinted head. Lacing is good down the side of the glass.
S - Weak hop smell which is disappointing in a double IPA. All of the hop aroma is masked by the strong oak flavor from the barrel aging. Some sweet malts play a background to the oak.
T - A lot of wood flavor up front, to be expected from something with "WOOD AGED" all over the front of the bottle. Lots of bready malt and sweetness is counteracted by a pretty bitter backbone. Not extremely bitter, but good bitterness balanced by the malt. I think earthy also fits the bill for this beer.
M - Mouthfeel is average for the style. A little too much alcohol flavor and carbonation on the finish.
O - It's good for what it is, but DIPA guidelines specifically say that "wood aging is not appropriate for the style". Plus, at $10 for 22 oz, I won't be trying this one again.

Pours a deep, rich copper colored body beneath the rocky off-white head which is slow to dissolve leaving a dense, sticky lacing in its wake.
The aroma offers a unique blend of earthy hops, sweet caramel and Munich malt, vanilla, and wood notes. I'm sure the two years this beer has on contributes to what the senses detect.
This is quite tasty and two years after the fact the generous malty backbone of caramel and breads malts are a bit more pronounced than the earthy hops. There is a sweetness of dark fruits as well at this point and generous woodnotes and vanilla.
This is a big chewy beer with a dry woody finish and medium carbonation amidst the massive body.
This is a good wood aged DIPA with great elements of hops, malt, and wood notes all well balanced. The woody aspects do not dominate this beer which is appreciated.
