From: Binny's, Schaumburg, IL
Date: Bottled June 15, 2012
Glass: Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock glass

Great Divide's doppelbock features well-balanced flavors between sweetness and bittering European hops, perhaps the most balanced I've experienced in a doppelbock. Blending herbal, green, and bitter hop components with a subtle caramel, roasted, and chocolate malts, the beer is decidedly appealing to whatever one's interests are. That being said, I felt like this could use more malt depth and complexity, for being a doppelbock, such as using more chocolate or nut-like malts.

Pours a 1cm head of medium tan foam, made up of small bubbles, that has above average retention, gradually decreasing to a thin ring around the glass and an island of wispy foam atop the body. Lacing is above average, with some spiderwebs and smaller constellations of spots elsewhere. Body is a transparent ruby-brown color, with slightly active carbonation visible, stemming from the bottom of the glass.

Aroma of mildly sweet caramel, a bit of brown sugar, light cocoa, a hint of orange esters, yeast, deep brown European breads. The aroma is sweet, but not particularly so, partly due to its generally moderate, average-intensity nature, but also because it is very well balanced by the European hops.

Overall, flavor is not as sweet or caramel-rich as some doppelbocks, instead looking towards a blend of roasted, caramel, and chocolate malts that is well-balanced by the European hop usage that adds notable bitterness and green, leafy flavor to the beer. Opens with some brown sugar sweetness and not overly sweet caramel flavors, Mid-palate features heavy malts with a bit of roast and noble hop bitterness and herbal character. Back of palate picks up continued roasted malt, a bit of chocolate malt, noble hop bitterness, and some caramel flavor. Aftertaste of European hop bitterness and lesser residual caramel-like sweetness.

The beer is medium-bodied, with fairly low amounts of carbonation, leading to a smooth, though too-placid mouthfeel. Finish is expectedly dry, from hop usage and residual sweetness of the beer.

Served in a snifter.

Appearance: Clear red amber with slights haze from the pour. Off-white head maybe 1/3" with a hard pour and light bubbles to its frame.

Smell: Very light maple hop scent. Comes and goes.

Taste: Can you say awesome? Very good relaxing bitterness offset with a bit of sweetness to it. Has maple syrup likeness to it that is very addicting and perfect for this weather we're having.

Mouth: Medium body, feels light with averse at best stickiness.

Overall: i haven't read a review yet for this beer but I can see the reviews being a over the place. Definitely more of a warm weather beer, really doesn't need tweaking and honestly I would be glad to buy another bottle. Salud.
