Picked up a single of this brew at my local establishment, Civera's Deli in Drexel Hill. Let's see how this panes out. Pretty stoked since I haven't really had a doppelbock all winter to really enjoy.

Appearance: at first pours a somewhat cloudy, amber brown, but that quickly changes as it settles into a muddy, brown, opaque coloring. I dare you to hold back and resist this great looking beer. Tan, frothy head settles to about 2 inches and takes its time fading all the way to the bottom. Impressive lacing down the glass.

Smell: Dark roasted, caramel, little hop goodness is quickly noticed. Somewhat cocoa roast is also noticed and is quite inviting. Possible dried fruits like fig are noticeable. Some graininess balances out the whole aroma department. Delicious and inviting. Can't wait to take a sip.

Taste: First sips reveal an instant rush of caramel and roasted malts goodness. Hints of chocolate and molasses are definitely noticeable and gives a sweet flavor to the roasted malts. It's a pretty big pop of malty goodness. But towards the end, the malts turn to an almost bready flavor. Bit of a downer, but not trying to bash the whole thing. Good overall.

Mouthfeel: Medium plus body with medium carbonation. Finishes somewhat dry.

Overall: Coming into this brew, I wasn't really expecting much. But boy, was I blown away. Not just another boring bock, but something special. The sweet cocoa and malty bitterness really balances out the flavors and brings everything together. Delicious and goes down quite smooth. I would try again and would totally recommend to a friend. Cheers!

a: Rich browns

s: Carmel and roasted chocolate

t: complex with carmels. chocolate, and roasted wood.

m: very good tasting beer. Nice complex flavors but no over powering. The wood overtones were real nice.

o: this is a very good dopplebock and a great beer to put in the fridge. It was very much like the german dobbelbocks but had a nice addition of local flavors to enhance the taste.

22oz bottle split between a pair of pint glasses. Poured at fridge temp, around 41 F. It's been sitting in my fridge for a long time -- bottled on June 5, 2012 (today is February 16, 2014). So...not sure what that means for a dopplebock.

Pours rich, dark coppery-brown color. Little head. Not hazy, just dark. Little or no carbonation. Smell is caramelly, yeasty, slight dark fruit. Fairly mild aroma.

Taste is sweet, caramelly, some kind of roasty bitterness. Darker roast is very evident. Slight smokey character. More hints of dark fruit.

Mouthfeel is a little flat (maybe age?), quite sticky. Overall, it's not bad. Not special. But, I wouldn't consider this a definitive review, being more than 1.5 years past the bottled on date.

A- Murky reddish brown in the glass. Poured a nice creamy 2 finger head. Good retention, trailing and lacing.

S- Cinnamon raisin bread. Dark fruits, earthy spice, a little booze, and some pepper.

T- Dark fruits, raisin, caramel, apple, bread, booze, earthy hops, and cinnamon.

M- Medium body with light carbonation. Slick on the tongue.

O- I enjoyed this beer. It had a lot going on with really nice balance.

Bottled in July 2013, poured into dimpled stein.

This beer has such a great, rich color-- a dem-like deep reddish bronze, deep deep coloring. Very beautiful to light. Thick beige head doesn't last, but makes a lovely topping to the beautiful glowing liquid. Smell is all German lager; bready malts, candied nuts, ripe fruits and an overall earthy hop aroma. Sweeter, but lots of complexity. No alcoholthat I noticed, just that rich doppelbock aroma. Wolfgang enters the palette on a slighty herbal note, with more hops upfront. A malty middle brings on lots of those fruits; plums, apples, I've seen some people mention raisins/licorise and I see where they could taste that. I like a sweeter, less hoppy doppelbock and Great Divide has seemingly tailor-made this for me. Lots of rich malty tastes, with a wonderful lager body. Lots of complexity but it is still easy to sip and savor.

A great go at probably my favorite style of beer. So yummy, masterfully brewed. Another home run from Great Divide. A whole bomber to myself, lucky me.
