I have several Great Divide bottles hanging around & what with today being NBS (Week 653), I decided to make this the opening salvo in my next brewery horizontal. There is an upside to The Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody & the opportunity to conduct & CANduct such horizontals is it.

From the bottle: "HEYDAY is an eminently pleasant pour. Brewed with barley, oats and raw wheat, HEYDAY is uniquely flavorful for such an easy-drinking ale. With a slightly cloudy appearance and traditional yeast, it is a balanced, agreeable offering. Exuding mild hop bitterness and a nuanced body, this is the easiest decision you'll make all day."; "Suggested Food Pairings: Moule frites (mussels and fries), Kung Pao chicken, Gouda cheese, Belgian waffles, and peach cobbler."; "Great Minds Drink Alike".

I Pop!ped the cap, but this time, I employed a heavy-handed pour as I wanted all of the adjuncts and flocculate in suspension. I have seen Kristalweisses, but a KristalWit? No way! I got a finger of dense, rocky, foamy, bone-white head with excellent retention from my pour. Color was a hazy, not quite cloudy, Pale-Yellow (SRM = > 2, < 4). Hmm. Nose was definitely yeasty with notes of honey, lemon, clove & black pepper. Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium, not watery, but not much beyond it, either. The taste was decent, but muted. The honey and lemon flavors were quite evident, but the peppery, clove spiciness was dialed down, where it should have led the way. Finish was dry as one might expect from spice adjuncts, but I just felt unfulfilled.

From December 2013 notes: Pours an opaque deep straw/pale gold producing slightly less than a finger of finely bubbled, foamy, rapidly diminishing, white head that leaves minimal blotches & motes of lace. Aroma is wheat, yeast, clove, thin apple/pear & pepper. Taste is wheat, spice, yeasty clove, apple, peach, pear & just a hint of banana & orange with a nice, spice & pepper bite from mid-sip that does not fade until well into the aftertaste. Finish is bittersweet white fruits & some honey. Mouthfeel is light-medium bodied with moderate-high carbonation, crisp, smooth & drinkable. As with the last couple of Witbiers I've tried this one is also good but not great. The date on the bottle put this beer at nearly 7 months old so I would suggest that I give it another try later with a fresher example.

Sampled yesterday on 12/14/15. Comes in a 12 ounce bottle. Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured in to a handled-glass 20 ounce stein.

Brew pours a hazy golden-yellow in color with a good 1-finger foamy white head. A decent amount of sticky lacing is seen when sipped that stuck to the sides of the glass. Aroma is of wheat grass, lemon zest with a hint of honey. Pretty much can be said for the taste as well with maybe a hint of banana and spice also. Very well balanced with nothing over-powering the other flavors. Goes down very easy and finishes with the light touch of honey. Really enjoyed this one. Medium-bodied with good carbonation.

A very pale straw hazy pour with a 3 finger fizzy super white head into a pint glass. Minor lacing. Guess I poured too vigorously as there was sediment detected. Nose was a bit soapy with a tiny hint of lemon. Lemony and a bit yeasty. The taste grew on me but the aroma was hard to overcome. Moderately carbonated but the feel reminded me of a little of seltzer.

September 20th, 2013 - Lemony, tart and even some white vinegar, Great Divide's Heyday is a real palate cleanser, but delivers It's own delicious flavors too. I might even mistake it for a kind of goes. The flavor is sweeter, adding a lemon-lime blend, and easily mistaken for a shandy. The palate is thin, and maybe a little watery, and the aftertaste frames the sugar and tastes, delivering light margarita notes. So, it goes down hill near the end, but this is a great summer sipper (or September, in my case) and a good candidate for beer pairings.
