An aggressively hopped American Style India Pale Ale brewed with Columbus, Simcoe and Amarillo hops. The use of 20% rye gives this ale it's trademark dry and spicy character.

16oz can purchased from the fridge as a single for $2.99. No canned-on date, I think it's relatively fresh.

Look: An aggressive pour yielded two fingers of a rocky khaki-colored head that slowly crumbled. There are lots of tiny bubbles rising up to maintain the head. The beer has a nice amber color with excellent clarity.

Smell: Interesting aroma. It kind of smells like it has a caramel malt backbone, but not quite. There's a bit of a brown bread note along with some mild spice notes like clove, cinnamon, and ginger. Earthy and a bit grassy. Notes of pine, orange zest, and peppercorns up front along with green bell pepper on the finish after swirling the glass.

Taste: This is nice - it's very flavorful and highly drinkable. The finish is a bit spicy and has a nice amount of dryness, as the label says. It's very pleasant and makes it very easy to keep going back for more. There is a mild to moderate lingering bitterness with notes of pinecones and orange zest and pith. Chocolate-covered candied orange peel lingers on the palate after the bitterness fades. The name of the game is tasty and drinkable, for sure. It's an East Coast take on a West Coast IPA with a healthy rye addition.

Feel: The mouthfeel is surprisingly impressive. It's medium plus bodied - the beer is very clean yet it has a full body for its weight class and leaves a nice lingering texture on the palate. It almost comes off like a wheat beer or Vienna lager in terms of the mouthfeel. The carbonation is spot on too. Very pleasant.

Overall: This is really good. This is my first Rye Beer review. I totally could see this being placed in the American IPA category instead though. It's not the same style at all, but this beer reminds me a bit of Maine Beer Company's Zoe, which is an American Amber / Red Ale. I think that the darker malt and hop profiles have some similarity (both have Simcoe).

From the can:
Alc. 6.8% by Vol. 65 IBUs. The Dock Street West Philly Flagship. An aggressively hopped American India Style Pale Ale brewed with Simcoe and Amarillo hops. The use of over 20% rye gives this ale a unique dry and spicy character.

Ehh, I can do a rye but this one fell a bit short for me. Back in the pre-craft days their Dock Street Ale was a standout, give that one a try.

16 oz. can. Tons of foam on a dark copper body. The flavor is piney and flowery, resinous, with a light malt base due to the rye usage. AS it warms it becomes more bitter in an appealing way. Outstanding.

Results of a pint can poured into a clear glass liter mug begin with its color. Too dark to be copper, light brown is probably the best description. Good standard IPA aroma is present. Mostly of hops but with some grassy malts contributing. This is one fine tasting ale. There is enough rye included to add a little earthy smoothness and enough hops to prove it is a true IPA. Flavorful and nicely bodied, it still is light on the palate. The finish is clean, except for a mildly bitter reminder. A good reason to invest in rye IPAs.

The Old Dock Street Brewery, LLC "Dock Street Rye IPA"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "092117A" and sampled on 040618
$1.83 @ Cherry Hill Liquor, Wine & Beer (Wegmans), Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: Nice label with a sailor riding atop a shark. 6.8% abv and 64 IBUS. 20% rye. Sounds good. Ahh, and it looks good too. It's poured a slightly hazy deep copper/chestnut brown colored body beneath a finger-thick head of densely creamy off-white foam. Very nice. The aroma displays caramelish malt with a hint of spiciness from the rye. I'm not sure here the hops are. The neck label states that it's "... brewed with columbus, simcoe and amarillo hops." but I'm not finding them. That's OK, if the hops were there you wouldn't be able to smell the rye so it's a fair trade-off. On to the flavor... more caramel and rye, and some hops. I get the orange-like character of the Amarillo lingering in the dry finish along with a swirl of spiciness. It's a bit piney and herbal as well. 64 IBUs? Yeah, that seems right, it's a solid bitterness but there's a lot of malt there that it's got to balance as well, and of course the spiciness of the rye helps. Looking back there's a thin but almost solid sheet of lace covering the glass from where I began to where I'm at now, which is about a third of the glass. Not bad, points for that. What have I missed? Mouthfeel. Medium bodied and crisp. Not too crisp, but more than just gently crisp. Probably a pretty standard 2.5 to 2.6 volumes of CO2. It's nice, I like it. The rye gives it a lot of character, and the citrusy hops are refreshing against it. Well done all around and worth trying to be sure.

It pours fairly dark for an IPA, with a frothy head and an aroma that is nicely balanced between piney hops and sweet maltiness. The flavor profile is similar to the nose with the bitterness being relatively prolonged.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a brown color with a 1 inch head. Smell is of citrus, rye. Taste is sharp rye, spicy, pepper stands out, minty hops, none of the citrus in the aroma, fairly bitter. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent beer.
