on tap at the 50th and Baltimore brewery

deep black body...creamy light brown head....minimal lace on the glass

fresh roasted coffee nose...some nuttiness....earthy hops

dominated by coffee with a rich roasted flavor...some bitterness from the coffee

medium bodied but still robust with a creamy texture

i like coffee flavored stouts/porters so this is a definite all night drinker...the low ABV along with the flavor makes this a no brainer as far as the drinkability goes....very full flavored with a nice bitterness

On-tap at Varga in Philadelphia.

Pours black with a half-finger light brown head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of robust roasted malts and large amounts of smooth coffee. Also present are hints of dark chocolate.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Equal amounts of smooth roasted malts and coffee flavors kick things off. The roastiness falls off a bit midway through the sip, allowing hints of dark chocolate to work their way into things. The coffee and chocolate flavors carry through to a moderately bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a very nice thickness with grainy carbonation.

Drinkability is great. I finished my glass absurdly quick and could easily have a few more of these, especially at the ABV.

Overall of the approximately 25 beers I had while in Philly this may be the one I would most like to revisit. A very well done coffee stout that has a fullness as though it's 8%+. Very much worth a shot if you see it around.

On-tap at the brewpub

This is certainly a beer for coffee lovers (Dock St. uses 50lbs of espresso beans per batch), but I don't know if it's a great pick for stout lovers. The flavor balance is heavily skewed towards the espresso, which while quite tasty, leaves very little room for the roasted malt flavors of the beer itself. This a nice drink and worth trying, but I'd have liked more beer flavor to put it bluntly.

This beer was a dark black with an irregular and sparse film of tan, served in a dinky cylindrical glass. 10 oz?

Smelled of toasty malts blended with a dash of coffee with a touch of stick barley sweetness and perhaps a touch of honey.

The flavor started out pretty stout-stout like with a good balance of simlar sweet and toasty flavors like the smell, but the beers strength comes in the finish when the stout fades and a pleasant coffee smoothly transitions over from the flavor. The dynamics are pretty solid, but things finish out slightly with old coffee that's slightly astringent.

Feels smooth, but present and crisp with a light playful carbonation.

A nice beer. Nothing that will blow your mind, but you won't be disappointed.

A-Black with ruby highlights. A thin tan head that quickly receded and left spotty lace.

S-Rich, roasty malt with a nice kick of dark roasted coffee. Hints of leather tobacco and smoke sneak in too.

T-A full frontal attack of rich, roasty, toasty espresso roast coffee. A bit of leather and a wafting of smoke in the finish.

M-Medium body with a great bitter finish from the dark roasted coffee.

D-Really good stuff. Full flavoured coffee beer without compromise. Well done.

Poured a deep brown color with some ruby high lights. Came to me with little in way of foamy head and I watched it being poured. There was a strong foam collar through out leaving spotting lacing.

Aroma was of rich roasted malts and coffee.

Taste is rich espresso roasted malts, similar to the aroma. I can also pick up some smoke or charcoal and peat.

Mouthfeel was on the thicker side of medium in feel. Has a bitter finish from the coffee no doubt.

A good beer I thought that is well balanced between the coffee and malts. Each compliment the other.

On-tap at the brewpub, served in a stange

A little surprised in the choice of glassware on this one. It just looks odd. A near ink black with a minimal tan head that was nearly gone by the time it reached my table. A thin collar remained with little to no lacing.

The aroma is of fresh roast espresso beans, dry nuttiness, and some earthy, grassy hops lying underneath. This is really inviting and a joy on the olfactories.

The flavor profile mimics the nose. Fresh espresso, roast, dryness, and grassy hops on top of a bitter finish. The flavor quickly plunges onto the palate and quickly recedes. Not much in the way of lingering. Espresso like bitterness and dry in the finish.

Medium to full body, nothing lingering. Carbonation is a little high, but this is still smooth.

This is a nice coffee stout that was a pleasant surprise. Definitely growler worthy. I will seek this out again.

Serves on tap at the South Philadelphia Taproom.

Pours a pitch black color with tan head. Roasted coffee aroma with hints of chocolate and caramel. Flavor once again dominated by roasted coffe and balanced by chocolate and caramel notes. Bitter dry hopped finish

On tap at Dock Street on 7/3/08. Served in a stange. Beer menu indicated this stout is brewed with 50lbs. of organic espresso beans.

A - Deep black body with garnet highlights around the edges and one finger of creamy light brown head that quickly receded and left a bit of lace around the glass.

S - Big roasted coffee/espresso nose with a bit of nuttiness and perhaps some toasted grains and mild earthy hops. Nice fresh coffee aroma!

T - Coffee all the way! Rich roasted flavor with moderate bitterness from the coffee, not the hop content. There is also a slight nutty flavor and a mild earthy hop bite. But make no mistake... this brew is all about the coffee bean!

M - Medium body, yet quite thick and robust. Texture is creamy and only slightly watery. Finish is dry and moderately bitter.

D - I definitely wouldn't have liked this brew six months ago, but I've since started drinking coffee, so bring it on! This is a very full-flavored, robust brew with a huge coffee flavor and nice bitterness.
