The Old Dock Street Brewery "Sexy Beast"
16 fl. oz, can without freshness dating or production codes
Notes via stream of consciousness: Well it's got a good name! And it says it's a "chocolate stout", I wonder if it's actually brewd with chocolate? - I looked it up "ABV 7%, 26 IBUs ...this velvety ale is silky smooth from the addition of 22 lbs of Belgian Chocolate (100% cocoa, no sugar). Brewed with European malts, Sterling and East Kent Golding hops, and fermented with a Belgian Abbey yeast strain." Interesting, but unless you know how big the batch is saying it's got 22 lbs of chocolate doesn't really mean anything, but we'll find out how much that really is in the taste. First, the aroma: chocolatey but no more chocolatey than most stouts/porters, fruity, softly roasty, a slight hint of phenols and perhaps alcohol, and no sign of hops (which is fine/expected). It's nice. On to the flavor... I'm getting a lot of roastiness and coffee that I didn't find in the aroma, and the fruitiness is clearer and fuller with apple and raisin and a bit of pear. The Belgian yeast character is quite limited and although there's some very nice spiciness there's just a slight bit of clove, which is fine by me, and I'm finding just the right touch of alcohol in the background and then again in finish. It's not that bitter but in conjunction with a slight bit of acidity from the dark malts, the roastiness, and the spiciness from the yeast it's really well balanced and finishes dry. It's a nice, smooth, polished Belgian-style stout, and its medium body and moderate, fine-bubbled carbonation really enhances that. What did they say it was "velvety" and "silky smooth"? Yes, it is. I could see drinking this in quantity, two or even three pints while out with the lads, and not getting tired of it or having it become too much for you. Yeah, at 7% she's a Lorelei drawing you in to crash on the reef! Enjoy the journey.

I found this very enjoyable. Poured with a nice head, looking good from the start. Smelled nice, with chocolatey malty notes. Definitely drank as a chocolate stout, with a softer medium bodied mouth on it. A little sweet but not too much. Nice all around for either a stout or chocolate stout.

Sexy Beast - Dock Street
Chocolate Stout - 7% abv
Purchased for $4.29 at Monde Market
L - 1-finger hazelnut head atop a deep dark brown body.
S - dark chocolate, some other sweetness (caramel?), coffee, peanuts?
T - Dark chocolate at first, then peanut butter. I’m not sure if there is actually pb in this beer, but it’s definitely in the taste. Mildly boozy with a noticeable bitterness. Not very sweet.
F - medium body and carb. Very dry.
O - A very confusing beer. I thought this was going to be a dessert stout, but it’s not sweet at all. Then throw unadvertised peanut butter into the mix, and I don’t know what to say. The dark chocolate they used does taste quite nice at least.

Pours black with a light brown ring around the edges of the chalice. No head forms, but just a wispy film lingers with minimal lacing, and the appearance shows a low carbonated brew.
Really roasty and chocolate scents in the beast. A surprising cherry scent mixed in with the chocolate.
Probably one of the most rich and chocolate-dominated stouts that I have experienced. Just dark and roasty malts really running the show here. Chocolate aftertaste. This is solid.
Low carbonation and pretty relaxed mouthfeel with absolutely no detection of the 8% abv.
All around goodness and very drinkable. Sexy Beast is easy to sip and you'll want to analyze the real Belgian chocolate infusion more after your first pour. ABV becomes obvious after the second pour and it can creep up on you because the body is light overall. Kudos to Dock Street Brewery in West Philly for this one and I'll be searching for it again.

Had on tap at Bluedog in Lansdale
A:Pours an opaque black with a small dark brown head the fade into a thin layer.
S: Aromas are of Belgian chocolate and a roasty almost smokey smell.
T: Smokey flavors come out more when I taste this beer. Chocolate is still there with a hint of Belgian yeast. Hops are very subdued compared to what I'm used to.
M: Light smooth mouthfeel. This beer goes down easy, but there is a hint of alcohol heat on the backend.
D: This beer is quite drinkable. The flavors are not over powering. The more I drink of Belgian style stouts the more I like them.
