Interesting beer, on-tap at the big bottle release party at the brewpub. Clear golden colored brew with an ample white head, lots of retention and lacing. The servers were having trouble with this one, getting tons of overflowing head and seemed to have difficulty controlling the taps; not sure what exactly was going on there.
The aroma is mostly sweet, with prominent honey, a faint trace of something vaguely chili-like and burning; grainy, some subtle yeasty notes. Again, honey was the dominant aroma. In the flavor there is also a strong sweetness, redolent of honey. Can’t say I know what blue agave tastes like exactly, though I’ve had plenty of tequila over the years. My father cooks with blue agave syrup but I couldn’t quite recall the flavor; must be the honey-like taste. There’s a faint chili-heat in the flavor that emerges nicely after the swallow, prickling the mouth a bit with spiciness, although it remains fairly subtle and definitely not overwhelming or excessively burning. Touches of citrus and some yeasty esters. The medium-light body and crisp carbonation help to move things along, give the beer life, and make for a fairly refreshing drink despite the almost cloying sweetness and lingering chili heat.
Intriguing, tasty, and different. Well executed take on the chili-beer style. It wasn’t until I looked this up on the website that I noted the high ABV; it’s completely hidden in the taste and nose, perhaps only noticed when one rises from their barstool.
