750mL bomber shared with 2 buddies; poured into tasting glass; Bottled in 9/2012

An ink black body with a tan colored cap. The cap is pretty creamy. Fading in swirls over the liquid and leaving some lines of lace.

Notes of chocolate and cocoa with mild roast from the base beer sit underneath a layer of funk. Sour, acetic vinegar notes with musty, rotten wood, apple and barnyard. Pretty aggressive. Some faint booze pokes through, but has a hard time cutting through the tartness.

On the palate, smooth chocolate flavors roll onto the tongue with horse blanket and leather quickly in tow. Notes of green apples and sour vinegar wrapped around old, musty wood. Some mild roast pokes through towards the finish before a sweeping tartness. The finish is a blend of bitter roast, sweet milk chocolate, and dry, crisp sour notes.

Medium bodied with low carbonation, which really isn't an issue given the agenda of this beer.

This is a well-soured porter/RIS blend. Excellent funk notes with just the right amount of apple brandy barrel influence. I have to seek out more bottles.

750ml bottle shared with friends and poured into a matching Dock Street cervoise. The brew appears black in color with a frothy tan cap. Some spotty lace sticks to the glass. A swirl revives a thin film back across the top. Some clarity is seen when held to the light.

The aroma is funky with notes of raisin. Some chocolate and roast come into play that mix strangely with fruity alcohol. At times there is a touch of vanilla and almost a candy-like sweet aspect to the nose.

The taste includes those previously mentioned notes of raisin and cocoa. Some mild bitterness and roasty elements. More sips reveal a tartness that brings out more of the fruit and mild funk aspects of this brew. Some mild vanilla and caramel linger into the aftertaste.

This is a medium bodied brew with a light level of carbonation. This is not nearly as sour as I was expecting based off the description I was given by the employee of Dock Street when I purchased the bottle. It is pleasantly tart and funky but nowhere near the sour bomb he made this out to be. The overall profile of this is a little strange and disjointed, it doesnt really meld together like some other funky dark beers. Regardless, this wasnt bad, just a bit of a let down.

I split this with a friend over Christmas, served in tumblers. The pour is very dark, medium white head, slight lacing. The aroma has a hint of barnyard, with lots of funk. The flavor is a great mix of roasted notes with the perfect amount of funky tartness. It has a lingering tartness on the finish. It is medium in body, good carbonation, easily drinkable for the style. My favorite beer from dock street. If they have it on sale again I strongly suggest it.
