I had one of these a few months ago, but i forgot...

Pours out a dark black, only hints of sherry coloring at the stem of my tulip.

Slight anise and pit fruits in the nose.

Flavor definitly puts maté right in the front, sort of a dusty slight tea flavor, not the best flavor n my opinion, but definitely maté. Also chocolate and cigarettes. Its definitely interesting and I give it props for that, if you want a new flavor try it.

Mouthfeel is dry, but perhaps that is the used cig butt taste affecting my palate. Nice medium carbonation.

Okay maybe a decent one bomber beverage, maybe for one time only. But I kinda like it. Even though I don't smoke.

Clear black colored beer with a tall light brown head. This certainly looks the place.

Smells roasted grains with patent malt aroma of smoke and coffee with a really faint bit of carob. Hop aroma does not stand out here.

Starts out mildly sweet with a stronger than expected roasted malt flavor, tastes of coffee with a smoky aftertaste. Doesn't really taste like a lager tastes like a porter.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall this is OK but not anything special, can't think of a reason to buy a second one.

Ok, caffeine/tea beer. I like tea, well the good stuff anyway. We'll give this a try.

Yup, it's black. Not pitch, a bit clear-looking, perhaps dark cola color. A small off-white head. Would like a thicker head, but hey, it looks good.

Roasted malt, some chocolate roast, tannin-tea leaves, baked caramel. Earthy

Roasty with some nice hops underneath. Somewhat piny. Small coffee hints play back and forth with the tea tannins and flavor. Very fine hints of molasses that are a bit overtaken by some smokiness.

Somewhat thin feel, with a nice hop/tannin bite/dryness on the end. A good black beer

On tap at Tony’s Darts Away in Burbank, CA.

Pours a super dark brown with a 1/2 inch foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small splotches of lace stick to the glass on the drink down. Smell is interesting with some herbal, perfume, and fruit notes that mix together. Taste is of dark malt and some earthy herbal/dirt flavors. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer and I believe this is my first experience with mate in a beverage.

On-tap at Tony's Darts Away. Beer with yerba mate....well, I've already had one in Brazil, so this will be number two. On to the beer:

Black like a schwazbier, with a hue of ruby orange at the bottom of the glass. Decent head retention and lacing. The aroma goes against the schwarzbier tradtion by being very herbal, almost like a scottish grut. A little biut of licorice is noted. Strong herbal flavors to taste, lots of pine needle flavor, but much of the malt is hiding. As it warmed it got a little better; the herbal flavor retreated a little.

It's okay as it is, but I would prefer the malt to shine better with the herbal flavors. A little unbalanced, and quite honestly, a little unexpected for me.

22oz bomber bought in Redmond and shipped back to Chicago.

Pours a dark, mahogany brown from the bottle, lots of foam that turns to lacing on the glass. Coffe aromas pervade, and burnt leaf, probably the mate. Tastes like it smells, with some black tea mixed in. Very light on the palate. Restrained hop bitterness that mostly shows up in the back of the throat as astringency.

Overall, an interesting beer. I have to admit I like it.

A - Pours a dark black with a bit of brown in it and a finger of frothy tannish head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some lacing.

S - Aroma is a mix of dark roasted chocolate and caramel malts with some coffee, earthy hops, and some yerba.

T - Starts off with a mix of roasted chocolate and caramel malts with a bit of black licorice and a hint of sweetness. Through the middle, some roasted coffee comes through with a bit of earthy hops and some yerba. The finish is a mix of roasted chocolate and coffee, some caramel malts, yerba, and a bit of sweetness.

M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a dry and roasted finish.

D - Very drinkable. Nice balance and good finish.

Naturally caffienated? Hmmmm.

I haven't had many black lagers, so I thought the bottle looked interesting enough to give it a spin.

The brew poured thick and black, no light was gonna get through this stuff! The head was barely there, but no matter.

Still half expecting the brew to be like a stout through and through, I was initially surprised at its...well, blandness I guess is the right word. It wasn't bad by any means, but nothing jumped out and said "HEY!".

I was hoping to find that balance between a coffee flavor, a roasted malt...heck, even some hops or something.

It was a decent beer and worth a try. I just wish it had more personality.

Poured into 10oz glass. Poured black, with just a hint of red around the edges, with a half-inch of dark tan head that low retention and lacing.

The aroma was fairly typical, grains, a tickle of hops, a scent that I assume is the Yerba and a bit yeast. The flavors were the same, fairly typical.

The body was average for the style, light and clean. Drinkability was OK, the Yerba wasn't overpowering. Overall, an OK beer but nothing special. Try it or don't, whatever.

straight yerba mate. pours a black color with a mediocre head. smells mate and roasted coffee beans. flacor is fair, a cup of tea with a dark beer flavor. well balanced and unique. mouthfeel is decent. a bit less carbonated than id prefer, but smooth and drinkable. a good brew, and an appreciable caffeine hit, but not a session beer no way. better than the ipa they make. right on

A: Pours a clear but very dark brown - clearly not black if you hold it up to light - with a nice topping of dense tan head. A rim around the edge of the glass retains well enough to leave a few spots of lacing.

S: Roasted malt with a touch of coffee, and very noticeable tea aromas. Kinda weird, but not unpleasant.

T: Roasted malts, leading into some slightly bitter roasted notes. The tea shows up mid palate, and then again in the aftertaste.

M: Medium body, medium to low carbonation.

Overall it's not bad, and it really does combine beer and tea flavors, but those aren't really flavors that I want to be combined very often.

Pours a very opaque dark brown, almost black with dark brown highlights. 1/2 finger of tan head.

Very big herbal tea on the nose, almost smells like chai. Powdered cocoa with not really any hops in the aroma.

Very thin mouthfeel. Finishes dry. Dry, roasted coffee and tea leaf on the tongue. Also a hint of bitter chocolate.

Very interesting and not sure who Mendocino is marketing this to.
