A - Pours a clear red-orange with a finger of frothy, slightly pinkish head. The head fades down fairly quickly leaving behind some nice lacing.
S - Aroma is a mix of sweet caramel malts, yerba mate, hibiscus, bay leaf, other spices, lemon zest, and a bit of other fruity esters.
T - Starts off with a mix of sweet caramel malts with some hibiscus, lemon zest, and yerba mate. Through the middle, some bay leaf and other spices some through with some more herbs and a bit of honey. The finish is a mix of sweet bready malts, hibiscus, yerba mate, lemon zest, spices, and some fruity esters.
M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a sweet and herby finish.
D - Very drinkable. Nice balanced beed. The herbs and yerba add some nice complexity without being overpowered.

This ale pours a bright reddish orange color with a very thin white head and a pretty high amount of carbonation. Wow, the smell is very strange and not at all beer-like! The smell is like an intense herbal tea, with strong notes of lemony bay leaves and hibiscus just like the bottle says. The flavor is if anything even weirder than the smell. There are of course hibiscus and bay leaf notes with bay leaf being the strongest flavor is this brew. There is also an iced tea kind of flavor, potpourri, and a somewhat medicinal quality to the taste as well. The body is on the lighter end, but not as light as a pilsner or some pale ales. I would not believe this is a beer if I hadn’t poured it out of the bottle myself. Like the other Mate Veza brew that I’ve had, if you want a beer do not buy these. However, if you want something with alcohol and caffeine that is not too beer-like maybe these are for you. This is probably a good beer to get if you’re drinking with someone that isn’t really into beer. If I rated this strictly as a beer I would have to give it a very low rating because I still don’t really believe it is a beer, but I will instead rate it based on how much I like the flavor of it in general. It is really not terrible if you like tea, but it’s still a little weird for me.

an absurdly underrated brew here on BA, this is entirely unique, brewed with yerba mate tea, hibiscus, and bay leaf. ever had a bay leaf beer before? i did not think so. the color is bright pink, electric and almost artificial looking, from the hibiscus no doubt. the head is short but persistent and bone white. a little haze as well. nose is strongly bay leaf, a little hibiscus perfume waft, and moderately funky ale yeast too. the dominant flavor is bay leaf, hands down, its herbal and very strong, but the bitterness of the mate balances it some, without corrupting the herbal sort of freshness that this has. the hibiscus does a whole lot more for color than it does for flavor, but its there with a pollenated kind of softness that screams late spring. bay leaf dominated though, and gets distracting, especially after the swallow. medium bodied, i like what the yeast bring here, and have heard this gets stranger with time, although I'm not sure how much stranger i want it to get, its already real odd. long herbal finish, again with the bay. id rather cook with it than drink a bomber to my head, but i appreciate what it brings to the table. very cool idea executed about as well as it could be.

On-tap in the Rogue Pub on Union St, San Fransisco on 3rd Feb 2013.
Red with a copper hue: on top a thin covering of almost salmon pink bubbles.
The nose and taste were simular to 'gluhwein', with extra cloves thrown in for good measure. Strange but interesting brew and a good night-cap after an evening trying most beers on the bars chalkboard.
