One of the first pubs you visit when heading to Balmain along Darling Street from Victoria Road.
Relatively modern inside, the front bar has darker lighting than most of the pubs in the area, but this still has very much a locals vibe about it. Nice restaurant area out the back with leather banquettes along one wall. Also an indoor/outdoor smoking area which always seems popular and generally stops smokers hanging around the entry blowing smoke into the faces of all comers.
The service was impressive, the bartender was keen to start up conversation, something rare for this country. I asked her about the Oktoberfest posters and she told me about the event they are doing for Sunday. So many places out here could do with a lesson.
The beer selection has deteriorated. This place used to get Murray's on tap including one-off releases. Now the only interesting beers were Little Creatures Pale Ale, Coopers Pale Ale, Lowenbrau and Franziskaner. The rest is Australian macros plus Stella Artois brewed in Australia under licence.
I've eaten there twice in the last 2 months. Firstly fajitas and tonight the chargrilled chicken. All meals are generally between $15-20 each, portions are sufficient and the food on the better end of the range for well priced pub food.
Beer prices were ok for the area. $6.50 for a 425ml glass of Little Creatures. The Oktoberfest promotion of lowenbrau was for 10oz pours for $5 and 20oz for $9.

I've popped into the Sackville a few times, and I've noticed that this place has really improved in the past few years.
The TAB section takes up a bit of space near the front of the bar, but they are building a separate room off to the side and plan to move all gambling into it. Once this is completed, along with the beer garden they are constructing out back, this place will be tops as far as atmosphere.
The selection is not nearly as good as the drive-through bottleshop that's attached to it, but they offer a fair few Aussie micros on tap. Little Creatures is currently The Sackville is a bargain too: $6.20/pint. Not too shabby.
