a: After reading all of these reviews mentioning what a gusher this was, I cautiously took this outside to open, but the bottle opened with barely audible pop. I couldn't coax much of a head out of this one.

s: Plenty of grape and some charred maltiness, a hint of wood as well. Pretty subdued overall.

t: Lots more going on than the smell suggested. Deeply roasted, almost charcoal malts with hints of chocolate up front. Somewhat tart wine joined in and the two elements worked pretty well together. The finish is what I liked the most though. Toasty wood and a lingering vinous flavor paired with a hint of tobacco.

m: Thin and a bit still.

o: These reviews are all over the place. There must be significant batch variation. I'm glad I got a good one. Falvor wise, this was pretty much exactly what I hoped it would be.

Bottle pour into st bernardus watou chalice..
Looks richly dark coffee brown active and spritzy for a barrel aged at 10.25%. Young pour as this is a new batch, yet I believe this beer is nice with the red fruit pinot and grape leaf bitterness on the tounge and nose. Strong alcohol presence.This is very dry, chocolate malts here with raisin, plum, and cherry on the nose; interesting blend of dark fruit flavours and vibrant berry like flavor. The barrel is carrying this beer through for me. Resiny dark chocolate and earthy front; boozey, fruity, pinot is a nice touch. A bit boozey and stringent bite upfront, hardly a complaint on the finish..Mouthfeel is medium to moderate heavy, carbonation is Medium. drinks a lot like a quad to me..Suprisingly not too sweet, since the wine balances the heavy booze with nice red fruit sour note.Toungue is coated now with pinot and woodsy oak. A good 3-5 hrs sitting on this one should increase the qualities of this beer.. I would appreciate this with black truffles, meats with horesradish and lemon(parsy/dill/fresh herbs), sweet-breads.

Terrible, agreed with others, tastes and smells like band aids. No coffee roast like one would expect in a RIS and while the pinot is apparent, it lacks the fruit character. It must be infected I can't imagine this being intended to taste like this. Like the rating suggests, the appearance is the best attribute and not that great as the head retention is next to none (somewhat expected with barrel-aging). Back to the drawing board on this one.

Somewhere between dark brown and black, sits this beer. Massive carbonation, head initially, leading into a deep recission and a drinker wondering "dude, where's my foam head?" Solid amount of roast, white wine barrel and smoke in the aroma.

Taste, interesting, made me think of Mikkeller's White Wine Barrel Black Hole at first, and while many think that beer (and this one apparently) are abominations, I kind of dig the juxtaposition of a white wine barrel and a 10% imperial stout. The excessive carbonation only furthers the influence of white grapes/white wine, the wood barrel is very rich in this one too. Because of the white wine and carbonation, I thought this one really hid the alcohol well and stayed light on its feet throughout. If you loathe white wine/pinot, you're going to loathe this beer I suspect. Its really prominent. The beer tastes anything but what it looks like. There even seems to be a little white pepper aspect to it as well.

$6 at Total Wine. I dunno if its worth it or not as a repeat purchase, but I think its good and different enough that everyone should try it at least once.

A- This beer pours a dark dense black body with a deep tan cream and a carbonation of tiny bubbles that glide up the surface of the glass. The head last for a good bit before fading to a thin ring

S- The mellow soft red wine aroma blends with some dark roasted chocolate malt notes and a brewer’s licorice note in the finish.

T- The inky black roasted malt has a tar note to it with some deep chocolate malt flavors with some nice red wine tannin flavors underneath. There is a gentle bitterness in the slightly dry finish. There are some interesting cigar tobacco notes and green wood notes that come thru with the dark roasted malt flavors as the beer opens up.

M- The medium-full mouthfeel has a thick texture that coats the mouth after each sip and some gentle alcohol heat that comes through on the exhale.

O- This is a nice smooth Imp. Stout that has some good notes of Pinot Noir supporting it. They are not really strong and the rest of the flavors blend together making a nice bit of complexity although subtle. Even though the red wine tannins are soft it still gives me that classic red wine heart burn.

Pretty roasty nose, light barrel notes at most. Taste is pretty musty and vinous. A tough lighter bodied than imagined.

Reviewed for what it is, obviously deviates from style somewhat.

Jet black with khaki mocha froth head, thin layer maintains. Good lacing, no sediment.

Nose is complex; bright tannic dark fruits, blackcurrant, coffee roast, oak, leather, tobacco. Really nice bouquet of an aroma.

Palate starts dark juicy fruit, bakers chocolate, bright acidity, mild oak and lengthens to dark chocolates, touch of vanilla, and sharp roast. Really complex and digging what some wine barrels can do to an imperial stout.

Full body, finishes slightly dry and pulling on the palate. Carbonation is right on target moving the beer along well.

For what they were trying to achieve with the aging in Pinot Noir barrels, I think they nailed it! Brings really complex oak, vinous tannic fruits to the style and it works.

Crazy, death-level carbonation. Strange smell. Chocolate, sour grapes and cherries, coffee and some strange funk. taste is sharp and acidic. Grapes, dark roasted coffee, slight chocolate, and sour cherries. The mouthfeel is very light and bubbly for a stout. The pinot noir notes may be a bit too strong for the base beer. Not bad but not something I'd buy again. The $5.99 price tag just made it too tempting to pass up.

So insanely carbonated that as soon as I removed the cage the cork exploded across the room. Murderous.

MOA Brewing - Imperial Stout [Stout Aged in Pinot Noir Barrels] (12.7oz ---> Stemless wine glass : 10.2% ABV)

Pours extremely dark and opaque, with about an inch and a half of foamy khaki head… The nose is that of a chocolate and roasty malts, with darker berries on the finish… Going to take my first sip, I notice the retention in the head and the lacing are both quite nice, as both has remained quite well with minimal assistance from the hardly present carbonation… A light chocolate bitterness is the first taste to present itself on the palate, followed by a warm wave of cranberries with traces of molasses woven in there… The mouthfeel is not horrible, though it does have a syrupy viscidity to it, which is not entirely appreciated for this particular brew… The finish doesn't exactly "align" with the rest of the beer, which can be said about just about every other aspect also… It's as if it's an All-Star Team at their first practice - All the right stuff, but no chemistry… So while all the components make this a very alluring beer, it lacks unity and structure… Though, on a comprehensive level it falls short, the highlights of this beer make it one I feel is at least worth a try for someone looking for alternative tastes… Another good brew - Cheers!!

Deep plum color with low visibility, thin tan head. Nose is fabulous, dark berry notes, black currants, earthy and woody, faint typical stout notes like chocolate and coffee, but they're not the highlights.

Nice beer, incredibly powerful. Almost decadent. Pairs amazingly with black pepper. Espresso, coffee, and chocolate up front, Medium bodied, but silky, oakiness comes through with berry like wine notes, a bit of alcohol on the finish and some earthy woodiness. Dark fruitiness, tobacco, coffee, chocolate, a deep complex brew, flavors blend well together, definitely a sipping beer, flavor is very overpowering on the finish, however food seems to hold up pretty well. A touch of citrus is in this as well, incredibly incredibly complex. Messy at times, but body is big and smooth and flavors are awesome.

Appearance: A deep, dark black/brown as you would expect with a RIS. A moderately heavy pour produced a finger-deep tan head which subsided to a thin coating at the top of the beer.

Smell: oh yum. Coffee, sweet fruitiness, a slightly earthy funkiness underneath the surface smells.

Taste: dark coffee bitterness, some alcohol, subtle dark fruitiness.

Mouthfeel: silky, but enlivened by lively carbonation. It almost dances on the tongue which is very unusual - and pleasing! - for a RIS.

Aftertaste: lingering hop bitterness with distinct coffee overtones.

As it warms: the bitterness subsides, leaving a rich roast coffee flavour with subtly sweet notes.

Note: this beer is corked and caged. This is for a reason. This is a RIS that is carbonated like a champagne. If you bear this in mind you won't have so much collateral damage to your nerves or your ceiling when you open it :P

12.7 oz. it's black, pretty much no light gets through. Nice half finger of light tan head. Just stuck to the glass a bit.

Aroma, heavy road malt, anise, some plum and port like grape.

Taste, heavy roast malt, along with large plum, black currant. Herbal type hops, dark chocolate. Some earthy dry cocoa in the finish.
Struggled between 3 and 3.5 here, gave the nod.

Pretty thick body, could be full if not for the higher than normal carbonation. Drinks easy enough, but the high carb chops it up a bit, and adds a little more harshness. Improves as it warns though.

On the dry fruity side. Not overly expensive so worth a try, but temper your expectations.

12.7 oz. bottle poured into a Burley Oak snifter

A: Pitch black with a nice tan creamy head that was 2 fingers thick.

S: Sweet and malty, it smells more like a barleywine actually. A bit of spicy grape in there as well.

T: I haven't had much pinot noir before but it lends the stout a great flavor. It gives it a more floral grape flavor with just a hint of alcohol there. There is a bit of roasty malt in there as well.

M: Nice slightly prickly carbonation every now and then but other than that it is quite silky smooth.

O: My first pinot noir aged stout, and it is quite good. It is an interesting stout that is for sure. The pinot noir barrels change it quite a lot from the standard barrel aging.

- Aged in pinot barrels.

A: A beautiful burgundy-chocolate pour produces a dark, peanut shell toned frothy head of one inch. Strong on the retention with a light medium rise of effervesce that left thick, stratified rings of lace down the glass.

S: The nose was fresh with noticeable amount of fruitiness and white grapes. The pinot wine barrel influence really comes through strongly unlike other beers ive sampled aged in this barrel type. Buttery caramel sweetness with a wet minerality of charred ash that was soft and eloquent with a beautiful aromatic appeal that also featured dark coffee-chocolate that was rich and sweet in nature.

T: The flavor showed rich, esspresso grounds, wet and oily with a earthy campfire minerality ash. Once again the pinot influence is really strong and appreciable, wine soaked fruitiness with a soft touch of alcohol. Dark sweet chocolate with some vanilla toffee notes combine with the pinot aspect to give this a wide range of influence and complexity.

M: Fairly light per style, silky smooth with a gentle charred warmth on the inner cheeks.

O: Overall very eloquent and smooth drinking experience, very well crafted and polished with a great influence from the pinot barrels that pays off with huge dividends which you can appreciate and taste as well smell. Generous glow of pinot warmth alcohol on the finish but still light enough where you would never guess this was 10.2%abv.

Pours solid black with a large, lasting head.
Nose shows char, roasted malt, cocoa and dark chocolate with a little smoke.
Similar flavours, but less complex. Roasted malt, booze. Not much else.
Body could be a bit thicker.
Pretty straightforward, whereas considering the alcohol content I would expect something more complex.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a large dark brown foamy head with perfect retention and great lacing. Aroma of roasted malt with light dry bitter notes is perfectly balanced against some nice vinous notes. Taste is also dominated by roasted malt with some light dry bitter notes and some excellent vinous notes which really don’t clash. Light black chocolate notes can also be detected. Body is light for style with perfect carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Magnificent marriage of different flavours.

Huge thanks to DmanGTR for the opportunity to try this brew.

A: The cork shot out with a loud pop. Pours chestnut brown, in the glass it is black with hints of deep crimson when held to the light.. I'd like to think it's the pinot noir shining through, but reason says it's not. Nice fluffy tan head on top.

S: Dark and roasted grain aroma comes out, light chocolate and licorice as well as a little bit of an earthy aroma. There is a rich berry aroma in the finish that I think is coming from the pinot noir barrels.

T: Interesting. Not quite the beast I was expecting. Coffee notes, as well as licorice. Some berry flavors, as well as a nice earthy bitterness. This beer is all about the finish, when a little more dark chocolate comes out, as well as some booze and a touch of a nut flavor.

M: Mouthfeel is remarkably light. Carbonation is a touch high for the style, although there is a bit of a creamy finish to it.

O: Overall a bit of a odd brew. The barrel process adds an interesting note, but I wish the base beer had a little more uumph.

Pours out a nice dark brown color, almost black and is topped off with a nice dark tan head that’s very bubbly. The bubbles are thick and creamy and there seems to be plenty of carbonation I this one. Mild chocolate aromas come through; fig and raisin are also detectable, light floral smells are also present. This one is very crisp and is rather light bodied for an imperial stout, it’s also pretty bitter there are some berry flavors that come through. It looks and smells good but this is not what I expected from this beer, not bad overall just not what I expected from a RIS.

Had this both on tap and in a bottle. Much better from the tap if you can find it.

Appearance-Dark brown/black with nice mocha head. Not heavy in carbonation

Smell-Woodsy, almost earths with an aroma of red wine and roasted coffee

Taste-Very similar to the aroma. Quick bite at first, probably due to the high alcohol content, slight charcoal or roasted flavor, with a full flavor and the hint of dark fruits, but does not finish bitter or heavy. Finishes more like a rich red wine.

Mouthfeel-Expected the feel to be heavy and thick, but not really. Slight carbonation and rolls easily over the tongue.

Overall-Very different when you think of an Imperial Stout. Heavy looking but deceptive and the finish is really different. A lot more flavor characteristics are noticed from the tap rather than the bottle. Really good if you want a "Hey, this is really different" type of beer.

Pours a very dark brown, appearing black in the glass. Massive three finger medium brown head with great retention and tons of lacing. Interesting aroma of toasted malt, vanilla and a light fruity component that must be the wine barrel contribution, but it isn't all that vinous. Great flavor of dark toasted malt, chocolate and a light, intriguing vinous component. Finishes with toasted, slightly charred malt, chocolate, plums and hop bitterness. A unique and interestingly flavored stout. Medium bodied with a hint of creaminess. Wine barrel aged beers are usually not the most enjoyable of barrel aged beers for me, but this is superb. The flavor combination and progression is very enjoyable. An unusual and excellent stout. A brewery that tries to brew a bit outside the box, but succeeds with flavorful beers. I hope to see more of them.

Wow, an excellent beer that is not getting the right attention...

I'm getting none of the reported issues with over-carbonation.

The beer is lovely. Black, ruby edges. Low carbonation. Thick. Rich. Chocolate (can't drink it slow...)

The aroma is chocolatey and sweet. Restrained barrel characteristics. Frankly flawless.

Taste is equally restrained. Equally flawless. Chocolate is still present with some woody character... some tannins and slight astringent bitterness. Overall balance just towards sweet.

Medium slippery mouthfeel. Very nice.

Overall, a beautifully executed beer. I will be buying more if I can find. No negatives. A magic bullet for friends timid of big aggressive Imp stouts. This one isn't huge, but it is nicely round and has nice nipples.

Moa Imperial Stout has a medium, creamy, beige head, and a very dark brown or black appearance, with lots of thick lacing left behind. The aroma is a mix of dark, sweet cherries and a dark-roasted malt. The flavor is strongly fruity, sweet, roasted, dark malts, and bitterness. Quite bitter. There is even a smoked aspect to this. Mouthfeel is heavy, and Moa Imperial Stout finishes dry, super rich, and pleasant. The alcohol is not present in the taste, but does show up in a strong way in the brain after a few sips. This is one to have! I rate it most excellent.

It's a barrel aged stout, but not the familiar bourbon barrel aged stout. That's pretty interesting. The stout itself seems fairly typical for an RIS, which means I automatically like it. Rich roasty malts. Maybe just a touch bitter. Then the barrel aging here brings in the influence of the wine barrels. It's just a little tart, and a little winey. There's something about the barrel aging that evokes bourbon barrel beers, just without the bourbon, if that makes any sense. I like it quite a bit.

Poured from a 375ml bottle> pours a typically dark brown/nearly black with a modest reddish-brown head that doesn't last for long. Nose has some really pleasant molasses, booze, coffee and chocolate notes. Taste is big and rich with strong malt notes that are hearty and bold. A little sweet, a little savoury, thanks to the smoky notes of the dark malts. Excellent carbonation from bottle conditioning.

Corked and caged 12.7oz bottle from Hop City (Atlanta, GA). 6.79. Best by 7/6/15, I assume bottled 7/6/13. Served in a Sweetwater snifter.

Pours a datk tea brown with an eighth finger pale tan head. Persistent thin halo and very little lace.

Smells strongly of wine with other notes of oak, dark roast coffee and an almost sour apple.

Right off the bat the strongest flavor is that red wine. Burnt coffee, oak, cocoa, vanilla, apple, caramel and a hearty alcohol burn. Not all bad but astringent and disjointed.

Fairly creamy, medium thin body with sharp carbonation. Bitter coffee, wine and apple skins in the aftertaste.

While it does improve as it warms, this just doesn't suit my tastes. The pinot noir aging adds an interestingly different element but it's neither complimentary nor does the base beer seem hearty enough for a barrel treatment to begin with. All-around unimpressive.
