Wow, an excellent beer that is not getting the right attention...

I'm getting none of the reported issues with over-carbonation.

The beer is lovely. Black, ruby edges. Low carbonation. Thick. Rich. Chocolate (can't drink it slow...)

The aroma is chocolatey and sweet. Restrained barrel characteristics. Frankly flawless.

Taste is equally restrained. Equally flawless. Chocolate is still present with some woody character... some tannins and slight astringent bitterness. Overall balance just towards sweet.

Medium slippery mouthfeel. Very nice.

Overall, a beautifully executed beer. I will be buying more if I can find. No negatives. A magic bullet for friends timid of big aggressive Imp stouts. This one isn't huge, but it is nicely round and has nice nipples.

Instant drain pour! in theory this brew could have been amazing, unfortunately is doesnt just fall short...it drops off the map! This crap was nasty, what a let down. I really thought I would like this being a fan of Supplication but Moa is flat out toilet water.

A - Pours jet black with about a finger of tan / light brown head. Decent lacing

S - Tart, woody aroma, almost like a cassis or kriek, with a faint scent of roasted malt. Strange boquet of fruity esters and even tropical notes. You get some sweet, sour pineapple, some figs and prunes. The nose is all over the place, a little messy even.

T - Taste is a lot closer to a dark belgian beer, similar to a stout made with wild Belgian yeast. Does not jive well, I personally taste a little too much woody sweetness and the belgian characters don't sit well with the flavors of the malts. It's entirely too messy and jumbled, with no real subtlety or blending among the flavors. Disappointing.
[EDIT:] After you give this beer a good 20 minutes in the glass, and a few sips in, your palate adjusts, and the temperature kind of helps smooth out all the flavors. Definitely not as offensive after awhile as at first.

M - Not thick enough for the style, and carries the flavor poorly.

O - disappointed as hell. Wish I hadn't sunk 22 dollars into 4 of these I'll never drink. [EDIT:] now that I know how much more this beer improves when it sits in the glass for a little while and gets a chance to kind of settle, I'd say I can probably finish these. Still, for 22 dollars, it's not really worth it.

A - pours into tulip glass with an enormous head. This beer is extremely overcarbonated. almost opaque black with a deep tan head.

S - be careful breathing in after pouring this beer... So much CO2 escaping I can barely smell anything. Once that's gone, deep dark fruit,tobacco, burnt oak, orange peel, molasses, and toffee.

T - the first word that comes to mind is "tart." Tobacco, oak, slight alcohol warmth. Aftertaste is tannic, astringent, and sharp. sourness, then nearly metallic. Lingering tones of red wine and tartness, and later, bitter husk and chalk.

M - this is where they really missed the mark. The beer is so carbonated that even a very careful pour produces 80% head. The carbonation left in the beer is low, but with a sharp taste of carbonic acid. This makes the body seem very thin, and for the already-sharp flavors going on in this beer, it really doesn't work.

Overall - not worth the $5. Judging by other reviews, I don't think my overcarbonated bottle is a fluke. The problem here is balance - too many sharp flavors (roastiness, tannins, unsweetened chocolate, tartness, over carbonation) and not enough residual sweetness. Quite the opposite of the velvety smoothness that oak (and particularly wine barrel) usually brings to a beer.

Pours a dark chestnut brown color that appears pitch black in the glass with a massive three finger head that takes forever to dissipate. Looks to be over carbonated with large chunks of soapy lacing left behind when the head finally settles into a lasting collar.

Deeply roasted dark malt aroma with a strong oak presence but not much wine or vinous fruit character. Charred oak, burnt sugar, stale coffee, toast and ash. Desperately in need of some sweetness to prevent it from being so acrid in the nose. Not sure how long it was in the barrel but all I'm getting is oak and the Pinot noir character is completely obliterated.

Medium bodied, extremely dry and way over carbonated. I could see how some would think there's an infection but its just insanely acrid and dry and the carbonation level is off the charts. Burnt wood, ash, cigarette butt, smoke, rotten coffee bean, burnt malt and toast dominate the palate. Just like the aroma, it's in disparate need of some sweetness and the Pinot noir flavor is not detectable. The high ABV is well masked but this beer is an unprintable mess. Drain pour.

Somewhere between dark brown and black, sits this beer. Massive carbonation, head initially, leading into a deep recission and a drinker wondering "dude, where's my foam head?" Solid amount of roast, white wine barrel and smoke in the aroma.

Taste, interesting, made me think of Mikkeller's White Wine Barrel Black Hole at first, and while many think that beer (and this one apparently) are abominations, I kind of dig the juxtaposition of a white wine barrel and a 10% imperial stout. The excessive carbonation only furthers the influence of white grapes/white wine, the wood barrel is very rich in this one too. Because of the white wine and carbonation, I thought this one really hid the alcohol well and stayed light on its feet throughout. If you loathe white wine/pinot, you're going to loathe this beer I suspect. Its really prominent. The beer tastes anything but what it looks like. There even seems to be a little white pepper aspect to it as well.

$6 at Total Wine. I dunno if its worth it or not as a repeat purchase, but I think its good and different enough that everyone should try it at least once.

Drank from my Duvel tulip

A - Pours classic ebony colour with an off white head the retains as a film

S - Tinny hoppy aromas, no wine or oak.

T - Up front some nice vanilla flavours with a hint of bitter wood pinon noir type notes. The finish is a little bitter, the booze is well hidden.

M - Silky smooth with low carbonation.

O - Would have liked to have tasted the barrel influence in this beer, tastes pretty much like a standard impy stout, and I expect more.

Pitch black with no highlights. Thick soapy, rocky mocha colored head.
Smells incredible, chocolate, very sweet and alcoholic. Slight caramel and licorice notes, and little bit of wine in the aroma.
Unfortunately it doesn't taste as good as it smells. Mostly Alcohol taste of alcohol and licorice. Little bit of roasted malts.
Thick medium to full bodied mouthfeel with a thick texture and an average carbonation. Alcohol warming with a dry finish.

This beer is really impressive in smell and appearance, unfortunately it's very average in flavor.

Appearance: Deep black in color, with a small, very dense tan head, thick glass-coating lacing. No carbonation is discernible.

Aroma: Begins with a strong punch of hops with notes of pine, and bitter grapefruit rind. Faint notes of coffee and roasted barley are also discernible, but are overwhelmed by the hops.

Taste: Opens with a strong wave of bitter cocoa, soon followed by cold coffee and roasted barley. The high alcohol content (10.2% ABV) is artfully concealed, it is a faint presence in the taste, and only mildly warming. As the taste progresses, the roasted barley and hops rise to ascendency. Late in the taste, distinct wood notes appear. Finishes with a moderate, herbal bitterness, which lingers on well after the end of the taste.

Mouth feel: Smooth, soft, full, quite pleasant.

Drinkability/notes: A pleasant,example, perhaps a bit lacking in balance, or perhaps it merely needs a few months of cellaring.

Presentation: Packaged in a 12.7 ounce custom green glass bottle with a cork and cage, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.

Sourcing information: Purchased at Spec's in Texas on 02/15/2013, at $19.99 for a four bottle package.

Odd sized 12.7 oz dark green bottle that was corked and caged. Very simple gray wrap around label. Right on the front under the black letters in yellow is where they tell you it's an Imperial Stout aged in Pinot Noir bottles. There was no date or bottle code anywhere. There was however the imprint of an ostrich or an emu on the neck of the bottle. $5 for a barrel aged New Zealand Imperial Stout? What's wrong it? If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

I poured this barrel aged Imperial Stout into a Cycle Brewing Snifter. It poured a moonless night pitch black color. It was pitch black, but it wasn't oil thick. When I held it up to the light, all I saw was a reflection of myself in the glass. On top was a creamy 1/2 an inch light tan colored head of foam. Nice retention that left behind a big string of foamy rings and a number of small blots of lace around the glass. No $5 problem here.

The aroma was on the faint side of things. I got a faint whiff of roasted malts and dark chocolate. The majority aroma is this weird sour like grape and oak aroma. I'm sure that's the Pinot Noir kicking in. Funky can be a good thing, but this is a funky bad aroma. Slight $5 problem here.

For an Imperial Stout, the taste was on the weak side. This beer had a little roasted malt, a dab of dark chocolate, and a subtle taste of roasted coffee. The end of the taste goes to the weird bad funky grape and oak taste that was in the aroma. Too much Pinot Noir and not enough Imperial Stout. There's a $5 problem here.

The mouthfeel was light to medium bodied with a minor aftertaste of roasted malt, dark chocolate, and more funky grape and oak. This was a very light Imperial Stout. I think the problem with this beer was that the Imperial Stout wasn't strong enough to handle the Pinot Noir barrel aging. This is more of a novelty beer than a good tasting beer. It's cheap enough to try. If you don't like it, you're only out $5. That's only 5 $1 scratch off tickets.

The cork pops loudly and forcefully. Pours all foam. Odd. The foam is tan and lumpy at the top of the goblet, and gets darker large open bubbes underneath. It sits on a finger of black beer. As I wait, the foam around the edges collapses faster than the middle, leavina a caldera, with spolotches of eruped foam lacing. It's so dense that when I topped up, a two-finger mountain of foam rose above the rim of the glass.

With patience, a drinkable level was finally achieved. The beer itsef is a black cola, dark, but not thick. Within the head, the beer stains the lowest foam a darker brown.

S: Wow. Wood, smoke, and syrupy pine resin combine elegantly in a strong, but pleasant scent. The nose features a jumble of different scents: pineapple, hot esters, raisins, fig, toffee, bitter cocoa powder, honey, and licorice. It's spicy but still pleasant even at room temperature.

T: The beer opens with hot alcohol. It's big and bitter, and maybe a bit oxidized. Behind the initial blast of heat, the hops assert themselves with a restrained fruitiness and grassiness. They seem less in-your-face than similar beers with west-coast hops, but they still make themselves known.

The guest ingredient, pinot noir, stands out in the flavor, with a tart, grape flavor. Moa succeeded in giving prominence to the wine, although I don't particularly enjoy the flavor of red wine. The wine lingers through the finish.

There's a big body, but lots of burnt malt contrasting the bready and sugarey malt. Toffee and sticky sweet molasses provide a platform for the alcohol, hops, and pinot. It also tastes slightly of salted rye bread.

M: The mouthfeel is astringent, and a little hot/fusel-y. It's heavily-carbonated, but the carbonic bite offsets some of the stronger flavors. A barrel stickiness glues your tongue to the roof of your mouth in the finish. Slightly creamy.

D: This imperial stout's actually really good, and has grown on me through our session. Initially, I was disappointed that it was over-carbonated, but the flavor, smell, and mouthfeel are prefect. The wine's bite is perfectly balanced with a sharp hop, a roasty malt, and spicy carbonation. This would be prefect with a sharp, sea salt cheddar.

Poured from 375mL corked & caged bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: completely black with nothing at all let in around the edges. Head is a thick finger of pillowy tan foam. Not too bad.

Smell: rich, chocolatey aroma with a hint of acidic zip, but only a tiny hint. Not complex, but sweet and rich. I like it.

Taste: sweet, rich, chocolatey malt mixed with a tart, dry fruitiness up front; at the end, though, it's all imperial stout. Somewhat harsh roasted malt and a hint of woodiness back this up. I'm not sure why this beer is so maligned; seems decent enough to me.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a huge carbonation and a concomitantly mammoth creaminess. I think it's great!

Overall: I'll have to go over the other reviews to see why people dislike this beer so much. I think it's a completely respectable Imperial stout with a lot of the characteristics I like. OK, it's not particularly complex, but it's competent and drinkable. What more do you want?

A: Pours a nice thick black color with a slightly creamy tan head. Looks good.

S: You really have to work to get a smell out of this. After a lot of swirling, I picked up some powdery roasted malt, wet earth, some dark chocolate covered espresso beans and some blackberry jam that I assume is from the Pinot. Some tobacco as well.

T: I don't know about this one. The only way I can describe the opening flavor is "spur espresso." Powdery cocoa powder follows with notes of burnt raisin, smoked peat, and charred malt. Finish has some leafy hop resin and merlot barrel. I taste the elements at work here, but I just don't think they go together well at all.

A- This beer pours a dark dense black body with a deep tan cream and a carbonation of tiny bubbles that glide up the surface of the glass. The head last for a good bit before fading to a thin ring

S- The mellow soft red wine aroma blends with some dark roasted chocolate malt notes and a brewer’s licorice note in the finish.

T- The inky black roasted malt has a tar note to it with some deep chocolate malt flavors with some nice red wine tannin flavors underneath. There is a gentle bitterness in the slightly dry finish. There are some interesting cigar tobacco notes and green wood notes that come thru with the dark roasted malt flavors as the beer opens up.

M- The medium-full mouthfeel has a thick texture that coats the mouth after each sip and some gentle alcohol heat that comes through on the exhale.

O- This is a nice smooth Imp. Stout that has some good notes of Pinot Noir supporting it. They are not really strong and the rest of the flavors blend together making a nice bit of complexity although subtle. Even though the red wine tannins are soft it still gives me that classic red wine heart burn.

A gentle pour into a snifter produced an explosion of dark tan foam atop a almost pitch black liquid with zero light penetration. Good lace but it shouldn't take 10 minutes to pour a beer, thus the low score. Head is creamy.
Smell is rich and malty with notes of dark fruits and spice. Good balance.
Taste is very rich. Malt dominates to start but notes of dark fruits, spice, especially pepper, and even some hops make themselves known after the initial sip. Notes of cocoa and nut show up in the aftertaste. Very nice.
Full body with a medium effervescence. Relatively smooth and nicely warming. Didn't see the wine barrel influence as a distinct presence though it was felt. Letting it rest definitely improves this brew. After 20-30 minutes the nose, tongue and mouthfeel all increase by at least a half point

Black with a light mocha head. Good retention and a little bit of lace. Nose of smoke, tar, some burnt plastic and underlying hop character. Taste has heavy smoke, burnt plastic, charcoal, black licorice. Hops are again in the background, finishes acidic. Not sure what the wine barrel added here. Medium high carbonation, lighter medium body. Not something I enjoyed at all, weird flavours and a palate that was too light for me.

12.7 oz. it's black, pretty much no light gets through. Nice half finger of light tan head. Just stuck to the glass a bit.

Aroma, heavy road malt, anise, some plum and port like grape.

Taste, heavy roast malt, along with large plum, black currant. Herbal type hops, dark chocolate. Some earthy dry cocoa in the finish.
Struggled between 3 and 3.5 here, gave the nod.

Pretty thick body, could be full if not for the higher than normal carbonation. Drinks easy enough, but the high carb chops it up a bit, and adds a little more harshness. Improves as it warns though.

On the dry fruity side. Not overly expensive so worth a try, but temper your expectations.

An opaque, black bodied beer with a tremendous cap of khaki colored foam. Retention is strong and the lacing is clingy and copious. Good looking stout.

The aroma is immediately wine like and tannic; chocolate and roasted malt comes wafting in after; dark fruit, oak, and black pepper all emerge as the beer warms and opens and are even more prominent in the taste. Interesting blend of sweet and chocolaty flavors and Pinot noir characteristics; again pepper, oak, and jammy fruits all emerge as you work your way through the glass. Nothing overwhelms anything else; I found this to be well balanced. Also put me in mind a bit of a Cadbury fruit and nut bar.

Fortunately my bottle had none of the carbonation issues others have mentioned; I found both the body and carbonation to be average for an imperial stout and the mouthfeel had a decent amount of smoothness and creaminess. Needless to say I enjoyed this a good deal more than most reviewers.

A - Took the cage off & the cork immediately shot up! Then the beer started bubbling out. I hate it when this happens. But, when I cleaned everything up & poured it pretty black, with a nice tan head and good lacing.

S - Musty, roasty, earthy & slightly sour.

T - Some coffee that transitions to sour grapes & ends with a dry chocolate.

M - Medium bodied with high carbonation. Not a fan of that combined.

O - It's interesting, to say the least, but just not well done, IMO.

Very good looking. Very. Plenty of head, tinted coffee-brown. The coffee, and a touch of bitter chocolate hang around for the scent, coupled with yeast and the slightest inclination of red wine. An odd but appealing blend in the overall smell that implies a very well choreographed beverage.

Taste is initially pretty dry, turns to softly sour chalk, and fades to a dry yeasty mellow swallow that leaves a chalky red wine aftertaste. I very much enjoyed the flavor, though was left to desire a bit more dry bitterness characteristic of my favorite imperial stouts.

Mouthfeel, for the first time I've ever claimed such, is this beer's weak point. Seems to emphasize the chalky aspects in the taste, and the pinot noir barrels (and age) definitely tilted this beer's viscosity a touch towards that of wine. Indeed, for the amount of carbonation and head in the pour, and the complexity of the flavor, the mouthfeel ended up venturing off in a direction I didn't appreciate as much as I did the other novel directions this beer takes.

Overall, an awesomely appealing beer and a great concept that is very well executed, but is lacking in aspects personally desired of an aged imperial stout. I would imagine one who enjoys both beer and wine to an equitable degree might absolutely love this one, and I personally look forward to putting some more age on a few bottles and seeing what happens!

Appearance-Dark brown/black with nice mocha head. Not heavy in carbonation

Smell-Woodsy, almost earths with an aroma of red wine and roasted coffee

Taste-Very similar to the aroma. Quick bite at first, probably due to the high alcohol content, slight charcoal or roasted flavor, with a full flavor and the hint of dark fruits, but does not finish bitter or heavy. Finishes more like a rich red wine.

Mouthfeel-Expected the feel to be heavy and thick, but not really. Slight carbonation and rolls easily over the tongue.

Overall-Very different when you think of an Imperial Stout. Heavy looking but deceptive and the finish is really different. A lot more flavor characteristics are noticed from the tap rather than the bottle. Really good if you want a "Hey, this is really different" type of beer.

Moa Imperial Stout has a medium, creamy, beige head, and a very dark brown or black appearance, with lots of thick lacing left behind. The aroma is a mix of dark, sweet cherries and a dark-roasted malt. The flavor is strongly fruity, sweet, roasted, dark malts, and bitterness. Quite bitter. There is even a smoked aspect to this. Mouthfeel is heavy, and Moa Imperial Stout finishes dry, super rich, and pleasant. The alcohol is not present in the taste, but does show up in a strong way in the brain after a few sips. This is one to have! I rate it most excellent.

I am a big fan of most of the Moa and had never tried this beer so was hoping for big things, especially with the barrel aging. Unfortunately the over-carbonation ruins this beer, big time. In a category that is filled with tasty complexity and outstanding examples, this is below average.

Appearance: jet black but way to much yeasty carbonation from the bottle conditioning, even when poured carefully.

Smell: probably the best part of the whole experience as it combines roastiness and burnt flavors with a sourness and musty element from the barrel aging. Not my preference with this style but definitely interesting.

Taste: Like the aroma, it is a mix of burnt coffee and some definite tart, vinous qualities and sourness. The carbonation, though, scrubs the palate way too quickly so none of this good complexity hangs around.

Mouthfeel: The great ruiner of a beer that might otherwise have some unique features.

Overall: I wouldn't buy this again. At a time when the market is flooded with Imperial Stouts and DIPAs as most breweries' showcases of flavor this isn't one that can compete. I'll stick to the MOA pilsner and St. Josephs Tripel.

I like Moa, and their attempt to make an imperial stout aged in pinot noir barrels attracts me. Bottled in a small 375 ml corked and caged container, on to the beer:

Gusher! Once that cage is untied, the cork pushes right up and pops, bringing the force of the beer behind it. Reset. Still pours very foamy. Soapy looking suds sticking around on topand leaving a lot of lace. The body below is obsidian colored and looking pretty. The nose is two worlds, offering a good roasty and smokey stout on one hand and a sourness in the other. The melding of the two isn't perfect, so I'm a haveta deduct from the score.

Extremely carbonated and bubbly, and even this level might be too much for a Belgian. If you can get past the carbonation, you find the taste, which is a bland sourness (possible infection) and some stout character (smokey, roasty, and some molasses). Just the stout base that I can sense would make it a good beer, the rough sourness (whether it's infection or the aging in pinot noir barrels) and hyper-carbonation make this tough to drink.

That's a bust. I still like the Mao brand, but this is not the reason why.

Bottle Into a riedel Shiraz glass

First of all, fuck this beer. After barely loosening the cage, the cork, cage attached, blew out of the bottle grazing my forehead. Then started foaming like an asshole all over my new floor.

A unbelievable amount of foam... I'm talking about foam like I've never seen before. Soapy foam sits on top, thick dish soap foam like what you get from sanitizing when you brew. Black in color...

S very sweet, musty, like a used barrel...

T musty, sweet beginning, ou definitely get a lot of the Pinot noir/red wine in the middle and ntp the end, the end also has a slight malt and roast. The aftertaste is dry red wine.

M thin and way over carbonated. Not great...

O the only thing this beer has going for it is that it is one of the few beers aged in red wine barrels that you actually get red wine in the flavor. Other than that I would not get it again...
