Moa Breakfast Beer is a blend of premium wheat malt, floral Nelson hops and cherries. A very refreshing and fruity lager specifically designed as a European-style breakfast beer but more commonly enjoyed as a mid-afternoon beverage here in New Zealand. Although not always.

Moa Breakfast is one of those beers that excites me from the moment the cork pops - my nose is assailed by ripe and sweet cherries, such a great thing to behold a brew that entices before the first drop is savoured and this (and only a few others) is one of those beers.

Poured from a 375ml bottle into a St Feuillien chalice.

A: Quite unassuming with its hazy golden body and ring of white lace that you would think nothing to look at it. Looks can however be deceiving.

S: That fresh punnet of sweet cherries is predominant. However other aromas make themselves known such as; passion-fruit and melon esters which hide those classic wheat beer characters like banana, cloves and bubblegum, that are no doubt in the background as difficult as it is to get past those cherries.

T: Flavour is certainly not as exciting as the aroma and comes off quite flat with cherry, rosewater (actually tastes more like rosewater than anything else, weird huh?), melon, hint of clove and a long dry finish.

M: Mid to light body, dense carbonation, like a wheat beer but somehow missing that German Weizen finesse in the feel.

D: I'm still trying to figure out if this the Dr Moreau of the Moa line; a hideous, misshapen experiment in brewing. Dan at the bottle-shop has tried all the Moa's and this was his favourite, and he was right about the Methode being great so maybe I'm missing something? As it is I'm not impressed by the freak-show going on in my glass which is a shame because wheat beer and cherries sounded like a brilliant idea... perhaps Moa thought the same too?

Food match: There's no escaping that powerful lingering taste of rosewater which only makes it appropriate for Turkish Delight or other middle eastern desserts.

A-Pours a foggy straw yellow. Head is modest. Straight white. Head fizzles off a bit. Leaves soft webs of lacing along the glass.

S-Smells of lager yeast and of cocktail cherries. Definitely making the connection to cherry flavored cough syrup or cherry lozenges; maybe a bit closer to cherry flavored seltzer water. Long wheat notes in the middle after my nose becomes accustomed to the cherries.

T-The lozenge/cough syrup applies perfectly to the flavor. Wheaty and lager yeasty. I can faintly detect the Nelson Sauvin hops, as they show some light hoppy spice and herbal components. But the cherries steal the show and I am not sure I am all too enamored with it.

M-Light bodied. Sips very easily, but the artificial cherry clings to the palate and refuses to let go. Somewhat dry. Carbonation is aggressive. No bitterness.

O/D-For the price, this is not worth it. Not loving the cherries. Too medicinal. The bottle looks phenomenal. The beer looks quite attractive too, but the nose and the flavor are where all the money lies. And the flavor does not equate to the price tag. Sorry, Moa. No MOA for me.

Bottle pour at the BevMo Holiday Beerfest held at Golden Road Brewing in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours a clear light yellow with a foamy white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy patches of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt and some fruity cough medicine aromas. Taste is much the same with a medicinal flavor on the finish. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an average beer due to the medicinal aromas and flavors that aren't all that pleasant.

A: Pours a lightly hazy medium straw yellow in color with heavy amounts of visible carbonation and some golden yellow highlights. The beer has a half finger tall fizzy bright white head that slowly reduces to a mottled thick film covering the majority of the surface of the beer with a thick ring at the edges of the glass (this is actually pretty good retention considering how it initially poured).Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Upfront the aroma of this beer is a moderate strength cherry licorice. There are lighter notes of wheat and some floral/herbal/medicinal hop aromas.

T: Like the smell, upfront this beer has the flavors of cherry licorice candy with moderate amounts of sweetness that fades into some lighter wheat flavors and just a touch of floral, herbal, and slightly medicinal hops. Very light hints of bitterness that fade quickly.

M: Light to medium bodied with moderate to heavy amounts of carbonation. Moderate amounts of dryness in the finish.

O: This is definitely a very interesting beer and I'm glad I picked it up to try - not sure that I would get it again but it is worth trying.

No BB

Pours a sensational champagne-like apperance. Pillowy white head over hazy body.

Aromas of yeasty cherries, raspberries and ah-hem, cough medicine.

Taste is yeast driven, some sherbert, lemons, cherries, slighty funky, and tart. High astringency levels indicate maybe an off bottle. So do talcum powder hints. Too sharp for comfort on back palate.

Mouthfeel good and light, well carbonated, expect the burps over the next few minutes.

Odd beer. In a word,
