Medium Amber pour (12) with off white head; good lace, carbonation, and clarity; some cap. Earthy pine and citrus/lemon nose. Caramel malt base with bitter lemon zest, earthy pine, and dank wet hop flavors. Medium lite mouthfeel with bitter tongue coating. Very good-I can taste the malt base under the hop flavors.

Format: enjoyed this at the Beervana Master Homebrewer Class. 250mL taster.
Appearance: pours into the glass orange-amber with a limited off-white head. Visible fine carbonation across the profile.
Aroma: sweet biscuit malts with plenty of grapefruit and pine hops.
Taste: intense grapefruit, pine, floral and earth hop flavours with sweet malts. Very complex and strong in flavour.
Aftertaste: plenty of bitterness from the variety of different hops. Still some malt, and some earth as well.
Mouth feel: moderate in feel with a moderate, sharp carbonation. The complex flavours seem to owe themselves in large part to the precision of the mouth feel.
Overall: definitely the best of the three Epic beers I tried at Beervana. They all had similar characteristics, but this one seems to be the 'daddy' - way more intense, complex and fuller in flavour. At AU$17 for a 500mL bottle (2014) it isn't cheap by any means, but I'll definitely advocate trying this one as you can afford it - I'll place it in the 'expensive but worth-while' category with Heretic and the Amager Bryghus Sinner Series.

Time to try the latest hyped NZ DIPA.
Pours a golden chrome with strong white head and great lacing.
Nose is fairly subtle NZ hops, I'm thinking Nelson. But there's lots of them. Lots of tangerine and orange. Slight chlorine. A bit of a candied quality.
Taste continues with similar fruity hop flavours- overripe orange, more (very sweet) tangerine. Quite a sweet beer, especially for only a 9% DIPA. There is also a decent dose of astringency in the mouth from hop or alcohol. This sweet-bitter dichotomy doesn't work too well for me.
Mouthfeel gets more boozy and sweet over time.
Definitely East-Coast in style, I'm afraid this beer doesn't really do it for me. It certainly looks the part, and smells of a pungent hoppiness, but the palate is marred by both too much sweetness and too much bitter booze (or possibly bitter hops, either way it's not a pleasant bitterness).
Not even close to Citra's league sadly.
