A beer with character, amber in colour and having a persistent head. Well-structured though very fresh, it gains its citrus and resinous scent with a clear bitter finish from the use of hops coming from both Europe and America. It is best with pork or fatty meats, dried meats and salamis or grilled meats.

IBU: 27; EBC: 21

The name: According to Hebrew cabalistic tradition Lilith was Adam’s first companion created, not like Eve from a rib, but from the earth. Because of her having chosen not to submit to her husband, she was repudiated and expelled, thereafter becoming a female demon. This name was chosen because Lilith was our very first beer, produced by the way, on the 6th, June 2006 (write the date in figures and you will understand!).

Poured cold into a tulip glass, sampled at approximate cellar temperature. Clear dark amber in color, with orange highlights. Not much head, minimal lacing. Very pleasant aromas of orange zest and rose petals up front which also obtain on the palate. Light malt character, medium-light in body, and an understated hoppy bitterness that lingers on the finish. Nicely balanced, not overpowering. I couldn't help but think that this would make a good table beer. I mean, why not?

It seems that I prematurely wrapped up my recent deep-delve into my backlog of foreign & imported beers! I had purchased several on clearance from the Country Garden Six-Pack & set them aside, only to run into the usual out-of-sight, out-of-mind problem. No time like the present!

From the Bottle (!): "Italian Amber Beer"; "Amber coloured beer produced with high fermentation and natural procedures at Brùton brewery. Our beer is not filtered, not pasteurized, it does not contain preservatives and refermentation in the bottle makes the beer, if stored in a fresh place and protected from light, acquire complexity and become more harmonic with time. Serving temperature: 10 - 12 degrees Celcius. Ingredients: water, malted barley, malted wheat, hops, yeast."

I gently removed the plastic wrapper from around the neck, Pop!ped the cap & started a very slow, gentle C-Line pour into the awaiting glass. I was heartened by the sturdy cap and the release of CO2 as I started in. It foamed nicely to form two fingers of foamy, soapy, rocky, light-tan head with decent retention. Color was a Coppery-Brown (SRM = > 17, < 22) with NE-quality clarity. Nose had a malty nuttiness with just a hint of citrusy resinousness, suggesting that the hops had faded.

No matter, since it may have been misidentified as an APA when the bottle mentioned it as an Amber. I have submitted a Change Request to have it identified as an American Amber / Red Ale, based on the Notes mentioning it as being "amber in colour" & the back label reading "Italian Amber Beer".

Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was very nutty, think (especially) walnuts & chestnuts, with a pleasant bitterness from the hops as well as a caramelized sweetness.

It was more aligned with a modern American Red / Amber Ale than in the early days of micro/craft brewing. I can remember being put off, in the late-1980s/early-1990s by cloyingly sweet Amber Ales. They were a standard in just about every brewpub, but I was not a fan. They kind of faded from the scene for ~ a decade & then return with a revamped vengeance when people discovered that they actually liked hops! The newer iterations are more bitter, but still with enough of a malty sweetness to differentiate them from APAs.

This beer was a great example of that phenomenon. It was bitter, yet not overly bitter. It was sweet without being cloyingly sweet. It really struck a nice balance throughout. Finish, then, was in that Twilight Zone between semi-sweet & semi-dry. It made for a very pleasant interlude. YMMV.

Appearance: Poured in to a Spiegelau IPA Glass. A novel muddy burnt orange, pours very nice carbonation, medium sized bubbles that form a generous tanned and fluffy head. Fairly good retention, takes a while for it to dissipate, and leaves a wonderful lace surface like one of my baba’s crocheted doilies.

Aromatics: Bright and fruity scents, a fair bit of sweeter citrus but with hints of berry. There are soft notes of yeasty sweet toffee/caramel malts at the bottom.

Taste: Very well balance between the malt and hops. A very nice hop profile which is a mild to moderate herbal-earthy grapefruit tart flavour. I get just a hint of crisp apple bobbing in an oak buck of fresh water. And not a lot of linger on the palate in the aftertaste.

Feel: A great carbonated crispness with a moderate body, and a super dry finish. The bitterness from the hops is tamed very nicely with the sweet malts.

Overall: Not overdone with the hops, and the choice of malt was extremely well matched. I do like a little bit of kick in my ales which this one kind of lacked... so I paired this with BBQ’s jalapenos stuffed with a swiss cheese - the cheese rounded out the body of the ale and the jalapeno gave it the spice. Really nice, so I’ll probably try it again

Pours a healthy two finger head of tan foam, generally even surface with some divots, dense, simmers down at a slow and steady pace, the lacing is mainly broad sheets with minimal stickiness. Clear and bright liquid, orange to brown in color, hyperactive maelstrom of bubbles zip about inside, visually inviting, does get cloudier with the final pours of the bottle. The nose has an erect bearing in the nostrils even as it mostly lays down the caramel, molasses sweetness, challah bread, golden raisin, date and apricot fruit, whisper of ripe oranges, good overall freshness, not much by way of any bittering hops until it starts to warm close to room temperature. Full-bodied, the mouth feel is on the creamy side with a bit of sour punctuation in the mid-palate. Upfront you get molasses, brown sugar, caramel yet not that sweet, candied orange peels, a few accents of bread and pie crust. Apricot, apple, pear, white grape fruit which bring with it cinnamon stick flavors. Carbonation comes off as on the sluggish side. Earthiness funk accelerates through the end and grows in stature near bottom of bottle. Its vision statement needs some reworking.

Bottle dated "best by 10/30/16". Poured into pint glass. Cloudy dark amber. Huge (3-finger at least) white head, which caused some carbonation trepidation but that turned out to be within reason. There is a consistent hint of grapes throughout - the smell, the taste, and the finish - that I find off-putting (probably because I'm not a fan of fruity beers). Yes, it has maltiness. Yes, it has a little bit of hops. But each is tinged with a grape/wine flavor that frankly detracts from the overall impression.
