poured from the bottle into a pint glass

A - Pours a very dark black with just the tiniest of ruby highlights when held to the light. Creamy, tan, two-finger head. Head stays intact until the bottom of the glass, leaves behind a nice webbing of lacing.

S - Nice aroma of chocolate, toffee and dark fruits upon opening the bottle and continues in the glass, although a bit diminished.

T - Burnt chocolate upfront. The body is more burnt chocolate malt with a slight amount of toffee balanced by a fair dose earthy hops to combat the malt onslaught. Quick flash of hop bitterness as the beer passes over the back of the tongue before everything shuts off. Bitter burnt dark chocolate and hops reappear a second later in the finish.

M - Medium bodied with enough carbonation to give a slightly creaminess. I was really expecting something with a bit more heft to it, but given the flavor profile and low ABV, this works fine.

I picked this up a few years back in New Zealand on my way down to Antarctica. I remember thinking it was much better than the light lagers we had access to down at McMurdo Station. I still think it is a solid beer, though by no means an Import Stout. Really this falls somewhere between a stout and a black ale with the simpler flavor profile and lighter mouthfeel compared to a traditional stout. Still, it hits the spot and is highly drinkable. I would get a few sixes (about $10 each) of this if I get the chance to go back to the ice.

Black with lace in glass. Appropriate carbonation and medium mouthfeel. More bitterness than roast, some coffee, caramel malt and syruppy sweetness chunk in the middle. Bittersweet finish. Drinkable reasonable stout. Thanks DouglasD for bringing back.

Pours a very thick dark black/brown. I can't see any light through it at all. There's also about an inch and a half of creamy tan head that fades away to leave a nice layer that clings to the glass. Smells very chocolatey and coffeeish.. A nice roast aroma. The taste also has a lot of chocolate and coffee in it, and some hop bitterness. The mouthfeel is fairly watery and a little harsh. All in all, it's a really drinkable stout. The price is right, I'd probably get this again.

A - Pours a very dark brown, with nice creamy tanned head that retains well.

S - Very nice dark chocolate/cocoa aromas with expresso with somne roastyness.

T - Nice sweetish chocolate taste with some balalnced coffee flavours. It is a litlle watery but the overall flavour profile is quite nice. The finish is a little bitter.

M - Medium to full body with low to medium carbonation.

O - This stout suprised me a lot and is probably just behind Southwarks and Coopers Best Extra as the best off the shelf mass produced stout in Australia.

hmm, no head at all. a few dark tan bubbles while pouring, but they vanished as soon as the beer was poured.
black as night. no light shining through this at all.
slight tartness (licorice?) in the flavor at first sip but that was gone before you even swallow. finishes very smooth.
this would be a bit better than the export stout, but only just.

A- Pours a very dark ruby red colour with a chocolate brown 2 finger head which fizzles away quickly to a light film. Certainly not a bad appearance but I've seen better looking stouts. I can already see some quite heavy carbonation.

S- Typical stout smell. Roasted malts and a toffee/dark chocolate aroma. Enticing sweetness.

T- Follows through from the nose. That toffee sweetness is quite prevalent on the front and back with a distinct coffee aftertaste. The alcohol is barely noticeable on the palatte at 5.8% and only gives a slight warmth to the taste.

M- This is my only complaint with this beer. Quite abrasive carbonation for the style and a little light bodied. Not too bad though.

O- I like it. Easy to drink and nicely warming on a cold winters night. It's nothing exceptional but honestly, I really didn't expect a whole lot. That being said, this is a fine effort from cascade.

A: Reddish black, solid dark color with cream foam head that wilts quickly into a ring of large bubbles

S: Coffee with roasted malts and light sweetness, rather nice on the nose

T: Metallic and flat cold coffee with some abstract sweetness that jumps out at the end like unstirred sugar on the bottom of a coffee mug. There is also a feel of burnt something, burnt malt maybe or simply a fake smoked flavor.

M: Light cream but very dry, dry, dry on a medium to heavy body.

O: An example of what an average Australian thinks a “stout” should be. Coffee, roasted malt and a milky mouth feel that completely confuses with a super dryness sucking your face off. Going in for another drink is the only way to remove the barren milk scum feel, followed swiftly by the cold coffee and burnt malt. Desperate times call for desperate measures it seems.

This pours black with beige head. Slight retention.

The aromas on this are fantastic, well they are if you like your beer smelling like milk chocolate. Luckily I do. Somroasty maltiness as well and maybe faint touch of coffee.

As I find a lot of the time the coffee flavours dominate the choc notes on the palate. Not sure why. A bit of fruity sourness at the back.

It's a bit too spritzy for my liking. I find the mouthfeel really detracts from the good flavours.

Poured into a SA Perfect Pint

A-- Pretty aggressive pour got a near jet black pour, just some tinges of red at the bottom of the glass. Medium carbonated but did get a large dark brown head the quickly disappeared into just film.It did leave a good amount of lacing. Maybe too over carbonated as head retention is pretty good in a few swirls

S-- Dark roasted malts being most evident and then a slight bit of a coffee finish. Has a bit of a peat smell in this as wood is evident in the smell. No sweet smell to this at all and pretty much has looked and smelled like a classic stout.

T-- The coffee taste seriously helps the beer out as it is on the thin side. Roasted malts are there but need to be kicked up a bunch more. Lacks thickness but is smooth.

M-- A tad bit over carbonated and could use a lot more malt and coffee to back a thin side but it is still smooth and balanced for what it has. Does have some coffee bitterness but needs more for a really good punch.

D-- At 5.8% it is very drinkable. It is a bit hard to find as Coopers Stout really dominates the market in Australia. Still, this is a good stout. It has some weak points but this is an enjoyable stout. A workable offering from one of the big breweries in Australia. With a little more body this would be very good.

A: Pours a dark brown color with a good frothy tan head that fades to some lacing.

S: Aroma of roasted malt and some chocolate and bit of nut in the background.

T: Taste of roasted malt with chocolate and nut. Mild bitterness and a clean finish.

F: Fairly medium body, but a bit light for a stout. Smooth with a decent balance.

O: Nice stout but seems to be a bit lacking in richness and character.

Appearance: A solid black, but not oil thick. Two inch rich coffee coloured foam formed on the top and stayed for the practically the whole beer. Low to moderate lacing.

Aroma: Light chocolate and coffee smells. A thick roasted barley smell also. Wafts off the top. The coffee and chocolate only intensified as the beer warmed.

Taste: The taste follows the aroma pretty closely, but then ends with a noticeable bitter finish that cuts the flavour abruptly and also oddly enough kills any aftertaste. No coffee, no chocolate, just a fairly sharp bitter.

Mouthfeel: Medium to heavy bodied with moderate carbonation. Not as creamy as you would think. Smooth but the bitter finish really disrupts it.

Overall: The finish is kind of a deal breaker for me. I like the aroma, appearance, and the first 2/3rds of the taste.

Pours a dark brown/black, with light brown head and lots of lace. Smells roasty and bitter. Tastes like roasted malts with a little bit of a bitter finish.
Very smooth, good carbonation, decent brew, I'd try it again as it goes down smooth. Thanks sammy.

A: Black body with shoots of bubbles running up the sides. Small, bubbly beige head.

S: Very roasty and a bit smokey. Petrol, hmm.

T: Dry, a bit papery with some not too subtle notes of petrol and chlorine. There's milk chocolate but it's dry and too fizzy. Despite these negative properties, it's not wholly unsatisfying.

O: Beautiful Tassie, one of my favourite places on the planet but not for the beer.
