I had a pint with lunch today at the Red Lion at Eaton nr. Norwich. Maybe it's been 'reformulated' since it's original listing here, as my experience varies vs the 'Beer Info' above. I thought it tasted like a very good pint of bitter; I really didn't notice anything that would have made me consider it a 'winter warmer'. The wasn't notable spicing, richness, or fruitiness. It's listed at 5.0% here, the beer pump lable and Wychwood website list it at 4.3%

Not quite as advertised. Would have liked a bit more of the hops and cinnamon or fruit tones to make it more festive. Below average from what I've come to like for Christmas beers. Nice presentation however. Suckered me in.

I am continuing my 2017 Christmas in July celebration, inspired by the good peeps at The FGBS who held Christmas in July on Tuesday. I had meant to drink these on Christmas day 2016, but I got rather blotto early on & set them aside as part of The Bottle Backlog at Chez Woody. Today is my series of entries for New Elf Christmas Beer in July Sunday (Week 649). I have just been informed that I need to wrap things up in order to be ready for 2nd shift. Bah Humbug!

From the bottle: "Brewers of Character"; "Bah Humbug is a rich, full bodied, Christmas ale, brewed from the choicest hops & malts. To those who say the Spirit of Christmas is a thing of the past - we say Bah Humbug! Don't be a misery ... go on, enjoy yourself!"

I Pop!ped the cap on my first Wychwood bottle in quite some time to commence a gentle pour. I used to really love their beers, but I just kind of slowly fell away from Hobgoblin et al. Once decanted, an in-glass swirl raised just under two fingers of dense, foamy, light-tan head with decent retention. Color was Coppery-Brown (SRM = > 17, < 22) with NE-quality clarity. Nose had a bready, malty sweetness with notes of dried dark fruits, kind of evocative of fruitcake. Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium, not watery, but not much beyond it, either. The taste was definitely bready, but also kind of nutty, not as fruity as the nose had led me to expect. I was put more in mind of brown nut bread or something along those lines. There was also a light spiciness to it that was properly restrained so as not to be overdone or to overwhelm. Finish was lightly dry, not as dry as it might have been, given the inclusion of spices. I thought that it was a very pleasant beer & had I been a bit less non compus mentus that day, it would have gone well with my Christmas pot roast. Oh well.

From elcervecero. In Ikea's pint glass. Playing Blackwell Epiphany. Nice spicy touch with reminiscences to gumdrop that makes it very interesting and different from other wychwood offerings

Appearance - Pours a copper red/brown with two big fingers of creamy tan head.

Smell - Cinnamon, nutmeg, earthy and leafy hops, bready malts, dried fruits (apple, raisin).

Taste - Warm winter spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger), followed up by bready malts. Hops are nearly non-existent. Flavours of dried fruits also permeate.

Mouthfeel - Light-to-medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes with lingering spicy notes.

Overall - A traditional English style winter warmer. Malts, seasonal spices, and dried fruit are on point. A little heavy handed on the malts, but I sort of expect it from Wychwood.
