Scarecrow is a lusterless golden colour with a fall foliage kind of tone. Although perfectly transparent it lacks that truly sunny disposition of a summer quencher and looks better suited to autumn temperatures. Its head is certainly no bale of hay but does leave behind straws of lacing.

You'd expect a brand marketed on the basis of being organic to smell cleaner and more wholesome than this; an aroma of stale corn kernels doesn't conjure pristine images of golden grain fields the way that scents of lightly sweet and soft, fresh-baked bread can. The total lack of hoppiness also robs the bouquet the possibility of any kind of 'green' qualities either.

When attempting to brew a clean, approachable pale ale the answer is not to tone down the flavour - it's to up the quality of the ingredients. This is the mistake so many producers make. People like the softly sweet, subtly biscuity flavours of barley malt - what they don't enjoy is a bitter and bloating form of mineral water. What's the point of drinking that?

Scarecrow, unfortunately, has more of the latter than the former. There's very little malt flavour except for the most raw, rudimentary taste of cereal grain. Hops are entirely absent though a light but crude bitterness concludes each sip. And the hard water minerals make the ale feel especially dense but don't add any redeeming flavour qualities.

Like a real-life scarecrow, this may take the shape and appearance of a beer but it's all hollow inside. If the people at Wychwood had a brain they'd ditch this offering and put their reasonably talented brewer to better use - then again this is the same company that brought us Ginger Beard and Forest Fruits so I wouldn't bank on it.

Appearance: A hazy orange body with very slow carbonation with minimal head that did not lace and took mere minutes to dissolve.

Smell: There a slight mineral note with some bready malt and touches of hops. Warming helped bring out a bit more potency. Nothing offensive, but nothing stands out.

Taste: Bitter through the entire beer, as mineral and hops permeate the entire beer. The doughy malt starts the beer, and it amps up the hops and mineral as the beer end. It's alright, but it seems a bit out of place.

Mouthfeel: The mineral note dominates the aftertaste, which doesn't seem quite right. The carbonation seems a bit weak as well. However it does make a presence throughout the entire beer.

Drinkability: The carbonation seems to make itself known after it his your stomach as it's quite gassy. That still being said, it's an easy enough drinker I suppose.

Final Thoughts: Go catch the mill, because it's running here. This is pretty much an average pale ale. No bells and whistles, nothing special. It makes me mourn for the passing of Fiddler's Elbow in Ontario.

A - A light hazy orange with head.

S: Nose is quite faint, but there is some discernible orange/orange peel.

T: Citrus peel, fruity yeast esters, a decent malt backbone. Nice.

M: On the light side of medium bodied and smoothish.

O: Definitely recommended, as with all of their beers. It's nothing that's going to blow you away, but it's very tasty.

500ml Bottle from the Ottawa LCBO for 3 or 4 bucks

Appearance - Clear yellow colour with an average size white coloured head. There is an average amount of carbonation showing and there is some fair lacing. The head lasted for only a few minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Bread, corn, apples, grains, grass

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, corn and apples. There is also some bread and a some wet grass.

Overall - Not great by any means, but pretty refreshing and decent for the style. For the price I have no reason to pick this one up again, but it was worth a try.
