500mL bottle coded 3CJK 22:34 at 40 degrees into a goblet
Bought through vintage Cellar for $17.95/4 pk
Aroma woody
Head small (1.5 cm), light brown, fully diminishing
Lacing OK
Body clear, medium amber
Flavor starts with a light malt bitterness, slightly woody (phenols?), no hops evident, no diacetyl noted, no alcohol evident
Flavor ends about the same, short lived
Body medium, watery, carbonation lively

Overall, a nice, easy drinking clone of Hobgoblin. Small, rapidly diminishing head somewhat lowers the visual appeal for me, but still a reasonably priced reasonable ale.

Bottle: a standard 355mL brown bottle with a pretty decent hobgoblin label.

Appearance: pours a dark copper with ruby highlights, very limited fine carbonation. A lovely one-finger off-white head slowly drops to a solid ring, great lacing.

Aroma: big, one-dimensional notes of brown sugar and heavy dark malts. Being a British ale, I'm impressed with its intensity.

Taste: some yeasts but predominantly those big sweet malt and brown sugar notes coming through. Not terribly complex - no fruits, chocolate or coffee notes. Still very drinkable.

Aftertaste: just some lingering sweetness - no bitterness at all. A bit cloying, but still goes down pretty well.

Mouth feel: moderate in body with a moderate, fine carbonation. Fairly smooth in texture.

Overall: a decent English heavy, if a little one-dimensional. Still, a decent sessional beer. Not sure the price is worth it though. The massive import taxes in Australia really hurt, else I would have this one a bit more often.

From the 500 ml. fashionably embossed bottle stamped CJK-22(smudged). Sampled on February 28, 2014.

It pours very British with its medium to dark amber color and long lasting cream colored head. Constant carbonation and decent clarity. Lacing too.

The aroma is full of sweet malts and even a touch of dark fruit. There is also an absolute bitter hop profile merging with the overall sweetness.

The body is around medium and rather smooth.

The taste has the same malty character as the nose but also a bit of black licorice to enhance it. Mild to moderate bitterness at the end but definitely not floral or citrus. Just more bold earthy bitterness.

This is the regular Hobgoblin on steroids.

500 ml bottle purchased for about $4.50. Served fairly cold into a pint glass.

Appearance - Dark copper tones with very little visible carbonation which left a very thin lacing on pour.

Smell - Immediate sweetness detected - hard to place but definite fruity smell - like a Belgian Ale but not that strong

Taste - Sweet flavor instantly but then more complex tones of malts, fruity tones, with a very slight bitter. Alcohol comes through just a touch with the 6.6% ABV but masked well by the complexity of flavors. Not too sweet

Mouthfeel - Very smooth with low levels of carbonation - but nice drinkability.

Overall - I was not expecting a lot from this beer but I was very impressed and would buy this again. Great after-dinner beer that's not over-powering with the sweetness/fruitiness and just a solid showing from this brewery.
