Rich dark red/burgundy appearance. Faint aroma of dried fruit, mouthfeel as with other Hatherwoods is sticky and tastes remarkably like the Golden ale, i.e. little of anything. Appearance is all it has going for it.

Created by a brewery under a pseudonym (that covers multiple breweries) for the discount chain LIDL.
L- Looks ok, quite dark chestnut brown. Thin white head, heading to lacing.
S- Better than expected, toasty grain and malts.
T- Pretty toasty, balanced, clean; you know this is actually a lot better than expected!
F- Quite a crisp flavoursome ale (and I've served it chilled). A lot more flavour than the 3.8% ABV suggests.
O- Could make an affordable session beer. I wonder who brews this, nothing 'sticks up out of place', it's actually a pretty decent offering. I would buy this again. BB: don't know, can't see one.

Bottled
and taking into account this is from a budgert supermarket not too shoddy
nice red coloured body with white head that does have some retention
good malty nutty aroma
slightly toffee flavour
above average and certainly drinkable

500ml bottle from Lidl:
Good sweetness on top of some earthy & nutty flavours with it going down easily. I'm not a huge fan of bitters in general so probably wouldn't go for this one again but it was fairly enjoyable considering it is a beer contract brewed for a budget supermarket.

From a 500ml bottle. Pours a copperish brown colour with a light head with low retention and some lacing. Smell is of sweet malts and caramel. Taste is just as sweet with some bitterness towards the end. Medium mouthfeel. Overall a good beer.

Decent beer when you consider the bargain basement price, not strong enough at 3.8% abv though.

Given that this is a bargain basement beer in Lidl, it's not bad.
SRM around 28, it's been brewed with Pale, Crystal and Chocolate Malts, and flavoured with "Fuggle Golding Styrian and Cascade hops".
The SRM is clear evidence of the Chocolate Malt, and there seems to be a reasonable amount of hops in there. Less than an IPA, but still not bad at all.

From bottle with freshness date two and a half months away. The beer definitely has a reddish hue and a slightly offwhite head which sticks around for a little while. The nose is not distinctive: a litle dried fruit and a rather metallic smell.
Very little flavour to start and on the watery side, but eventually a warm, malty flavour becomes apparent. Eventually some hops go through the motions taking the taste through red wine with very moderate spiciness to a very slight herbal and caramel aftertaste. This is OK, but it needs to be a lot bigger to capture my attention (which alas is not what you expect for 99p or less a bottle).

Purchased at the Lidl supermarket, coming in a 500ml brown bottle; BB 31/07/14, served cool in a straight imperial pint glass. Note: The back label specifies the ingredients include Pale, Crystal and Chocolate malts, plus Fuggle, Golding, Cascade and Styrian hops. The Head Brewer is Jeff Drew, although the label doesn’t specify which brewery makes this beer for the Lidl supermarket chain.
A: pours a dark russet brown colour with good clarity, coming with a dark beige foamy head with o.k. retention, on top of moderate carbonation.
S: caramely and brown-bread-ish malts abound, gristy chocolate malts, mashed chestnuts and Chinese/Taiwanese black grass jelly lag behind. Malty as the theme, added with a light acidic yeastiness, while hops come rather limited on the nose.
T: quite effervescent, weak-flavoured and slightly acidic comes the foretaste, but always with a pleasant brown-bread-ish and lightly nutty maltiness on the side, going drier towards the finish, where the residual elements of light sulphuric notes, plummy fruitiness, and sweet black-tea-ish aroma linger, pretty well attenuated overall. Interestingly, the beer is not so much different in terms of quality then the Hatherwood Golden Goose, but the dry-ish palate goes rather well with this supposedly malty brew, rendering a slightly better drinkability all in all.
M&O: medium-plus level on the carbonation, light-bodied, well-attenuated but dull in terms of flavour, this brown-coloured ale is like a much watered-down version of Hobgoblin, really, for the likeliness in terms of the acidity, yeasty flavours, and the level of attenuation. But so many different ingredients are used… really? I can’t quite pick them up, esp. the hops.

Brown 500ml bottle for 99 pence: BBD 30 Jun 2014, poured into a UK pint sleeve during July 2013 in my back garden.
As the name suggests this has a red hue to it's look, more copper than ruby though: off-white too cream coloured head.
Sweet malty nose and taste: caramel/toffee mainly. The hop content gives it a balance but this leans greatly towards a malt laden brew.
OK body wise, not rich or creamy, but not watery either. Cheap supermarket beer and it shows really.
