Vintage 2010. Purchased at Nikki's in Providence for $20 after tax. Some of these are aged in Calvados barrels, others in Amarone casks. This one says "Reserve 2010 24 months in barrel". Looking around online leads me to believe that this one is the Amarone version. Bottle no. 0440.

Looks like I expected. Similar to the other oxidized barrel-aged Italian barleywines from Ducato, Borgo, and Baladin.

This one's more comparable to Birra Del Borgo's Seidici Gradi than to Baladin's Xyauyu series. Still, wave after wave of chocolatey and spirity goodness. Super sweet but not too much. I'll have to start trying some Amarone wines so I know what flavors the aging added to this beer.

You can taste the fact that this one has been aged extensively - 24 months is a long time. And the barrels were left only 2/3 filled with the beer so as to let it oxidate during the aging process.

I hate the price tags on these but I can't stray away. A great treat to share with someone as a nice after-dinner digestivo or a night cap. Great job as always Ducato.

hard not to be impressed with the spectrum of beers these guys produce, some of course better than others, but what a treat to get to drink something this far out, even if it ends up being not my favorite. murky apple cider color to this one, and its got a real meaty smell to it, not smokey necessarily, but more of cooked meat thing, like gourmet dog food, in a good way. its puzzling, and i am about positive mine was aged in amarone wine barrels, not calvados. you know, the raisin wine, its definitely got that dried fruit thing. its cool because you can definitely taste the barrel treatment, both in fruit complexion and in warming winey booziness. its crazy how hot this smells, like smelling salts it shoots the head back with a deep whiff, no attempt to hide it i dont think. the beer is super thick, and quite sweet, made heavier by a relative lack of carbonation. its sugary like molasses in the middle, but resolves by the finish. im not sure i would have called in a barleywine, but now it makes sense. this is the essence of long boil caramelized malt properties, and then some. its a beast on the grain, like sweet porridge or something, and the boozy woody finish only mellows it a little. i taste apple in here, and the crazy wine too. id like to compare it to calvados edition one day, but im not sure i am willing to pay 20 bucks to do that
