16 oz. served in a tulip at Max's Taphouse in Baltimore. From notes.

A: Pours a dark copper color with a finger's worth of white-colored head. The head on this is beautiful - it's extremely creamy, with fantastic retention to boot. A nice ring of lacing is left behind.

S: Holy. Friggen. Peat. While the peat is very strong - perhaps even too strong for some - the lesser notes of peat (like burnt rubber) are nicely hidden. Letting it open up will give it some additional notes of brett funk and tart lemon. It's hard to explain why, but it just works.

T: It starts off with some lemony tartness, which quickly transitions to an assload of peat flavors. A slight vinous characteristic appears on the back end. This is very very VERY peaty - somehow, everything stays balanced. It's the whole art of adding one extreme flavor to another extreme flavor, and hoping they somehow coexist. Usually that idea falls flat on its face; but in this one, Ducato pulled it off, and the end result is fantastic.

M: This has a tannic feel befitting a sour ale. It remains light on the palate, and could even be called refreshing. Wait, there's no "could be" about it, it IS refreshing. Carbonation is pretty much medium.

O: Not for everyone at all - I was with someone else who ordered this, and he absolutely hated it. Me, I absolutely loved the sour/peat interplay going on here. This is so deliciously unhinged in the best way, and you bet I'll be looking for this one again.

Orange red with a quickly fading head. Smells like smoky peat and funky blue cheese. Tastes like dried apricots, smoky peat and blue cheese. Very unique and delicious.

This beer is so sour I could hardly drink it. Not sure how long it will take for me to appreciate a beer like this.

I do not even remotely like this style, but let's be honest - it's crafted pretty well. Very aromatic with a decent roll of funk that leans towards wet leaves and band aid. Taste is immediately puckering and maintains that pucker while the funk floats in. The peat is hidden until the finish where it's less "Scotchy" and more earthy. Again, not a fan at all, but this deserves it's due.

Drinking a cellar temp bottle poured into a snifter. This beer is a gift from my mother-in-law. Im glad to have the opportunity to drink this beer.
The beer pours a clear golden color at first and then becomes very cloudy at the end of the pour. There is a lot of sediment suspended in the glass and a wispy island and a thin edge layer of bleached white foam rests on the surface.
The aroma is is dominated by musty blanket and farmhouse notes with a bit of a phenolic note and general sharp funkiness.
The first sip releases extremely prickly carbonation and tart acidic flavor that dominates my palate. Lemon juice and some hints of smoked malt. The smoked malt and a little ham or sausage note pushes the brett aside as the beer warms. this actually makes the beer much more approachable in my opinion. Hops get no showing and the booze is also hidden. I do also get a bit of sweet brown sugary malt in the back end, but this is covered by the tart sour note coming back on the finish. The finish also completely dries my palate after each swallow.
THis is a funky brew that I cant quite figure out if I like it or dont want to finish it.
Worth a try if you like funky stuff and especially if you like really tart or sour brews.
Im glad to have tried it but dont think I would make this a regular.

BOTTLE: 11.2 fl oz. Brown glass. Branded white and brown pry-off crown cap. No neck label. Purchased at a bottle shop in Torino, Italy.

"Ale with 16.50% havin been aged in Scotch whiskey [sic] barrel." "Brett Peat Daydream is a blend of three different beers: 1.a Peated Barley Wine Style Ale, 2. a Rauch Marzen with a part aged in Scotch Whiskey [sic] barrels, 3. a Brett ale which has inoculated [sic] with Brettanomyces before a six month maturation in a steel vessel." Imported by B. United International.

7.0% ABV.

HEAD: None. No lacing.

BODY: Hazy orange of average vibrance. No yeast particulate/lees/sediment is visible within. Plenty of turbidity.

Looks a bit like pulpy orange juice.

AROMA: Brettanomyces funkiness is evident. Really faint smoked malt. Biscuity (saccharomyces) yeast. Pulp. I don't find any whisky, but maybe some subtle peat. Funkiness dominates, and boy is it funky. Acid. Quite mild floral/fruity hop notes.

Aromatic intensity is average.

No off-notes are present.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Acidic. Peat is definitely present, as is the titular brettanomyces and its concomitant funkiness. No overt Scotch whisky here, but there is a touch of indistinct dampened wood.

Balanced in spite of being a blend, but not gestalt in spite of its impressive cohesion. Depth of flavour is nice.

It just doesn't deliver on the Scotch, which is disappointing. I'd like more peat, more wood, and more complexity in general. The funkiness is nice, though, and doesn't clash with the peat the way you might anticipate. The now-tired cliche of "sweaty gym sock" does come to mind.

Smooth, wet, medium to full-bodied, well carbonated, and oddly refreshing. Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough, or scratchy.

Sourness isn't pucker-inducing, maybe a 6/10 in terms of intensity. This will satisfy sour fans, and I'm unsure how they're accomplishing this level of sourness if all they're using is brettanomyces bruxellensis - though I guess brettanomyces lambicus is a possibility?

OVERALL: An interesting beer and a bold attempt at combining two flavour profiles you might think would clash. As innovative an offering as it is, it's not the glowing success I hoped for, but it is evidence Del Ducato has some talented blenders. Worth trying once, though its price point isn't really reasonable (in classic Italian microbrew fashion). Drinkable and enjoyable, and certainly a welcome change from the insipid-or-worse pale lagers ubiquitous in its country of origin.

Reviewing it from nonexistant notes so bear with me.

Excited to try it because it's bizarre, and because I love Ducato and Italian beers.

From the bottle:

"Brett Peat Daydream is a blend
of three different beers:
1. a Peated Barley Wine Style Ale, 2. a Rauch Märzen
with a part aged in Scotch Whiskey barrels, 3. a
Brett Ale wich (sic.) has inoculated with Brettanomyces
before a six month maturation in a steel vessel."

It smelled like burnt pencils, a little bit of old green tea leaves left outside in a shallow puddle of stagnant water, and a smidge of faint sourness.

The taste is very sour at the start, kind of mellows into a very faint smokiness, then you get the little sweetness of the "barleywine", but the strong irregular sour character lingers the entire time.

The aftertaste loses most of the sourness, hangs on to the smokiness for a bit and ends on a bit of a sweet note.

Overall, a truly bizarre beer, but what else do we expect from Birrificio del Ducato? Glad I tried it, just wish I was still in Italy so I didn't have to pay anywhere from $10 to $20 for each tiny bottle of these curiosities.

Good beer; although, it smells much better than it tastes. Aroma is smoke, vinegar, fruit, malt. Appearance is a hazy amber with some head. Flavor's like nose, but smoke is much stronger and clashes a bit with the tart. Decent body and finish.

Pours butterscotch color with a nice full tight white head that lingers for a bit. The nose smacks with that sour Brettanomyces smell that promises sour and wine-like. The first sip is truly overwhelming... The rauch / smoke, and the peat, and then the sour. My mouth went schizophrenic for about 60 seconds. Then it warms a bit and the Brett really dominates and the other flavors settle down in back like old school fans at a counting crows concert. I love Brettanomyces and so that makes this beer really interesting and a great sipper for me. Definitely not for everyone though. This one is different for sure. And I enjoyed it.
