I must admit that I bought this beer simply because I liked the shape of the bottle. Anyway, it comes out completely black, with a couple fingers of tan heading. The nose is of dark chocolate, chillies, and not much else. The chillies are not as much pronounced in the flavor, more aiding in the path of the dark chocolate. Body is medium to heavy, and luckily very drinkable. I tried Cigar City Hunahpu recently, and this is definitely the closest thing I have found to it. They really use the chillies to a point where they compliment the chocolate, and do not overwhelm at all. Verdi is an excellent stout that I recommend completely.

Reviewed blind as part of Blind BIF 7. This stuf pours a straight obsidian topped by a finger of staunch tan foam. The nose comprises cocoa, mild roasted malts, dark fruits in a Port vein, molasses, and a whisper of cinnamon. The taste brings in more of the same, though the cocoa is now more of a dark chocolate character, the Port-like fruit is now a darker berry-style thing, and some coffee makes an appearance. In addition, towards the finish, a lightly lingering pepper heat comes into play, but it remains fairly subtle for me until things warm up a bit. The body is a strong medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a lightly chewy feel. Overall, a damn nice stout, one that nails complexity without drowning your tongue in confusion. Good times, indeed.

Initial note: This beer is spiced with chili.

Presentation: 330 ml bottle with freshness date on the label (best before 2010-08-15). The bottle design is rather unique, and quite good looking - like a mini champagne bottle.

Appearance: The beer is basically black, or very dark brown. The 2 cm big head is light brown/beige, thick and creamy, and settles quickly leaving some lacings and a solid lid of foam on top of the beer.

Smell: Lots of coffee and cream hits the nose. Sweet licorice adds more sweet aromas. Some roasted malts and a light twang from the alcohol.

Taste: A prominent taste of milk chocolate together with coffee and vanilla up front. More roasted malts, and a faint fruity flavor. The taste is pleasant and quite complex, but not as big as some imperial stouts. The finish, however, have much more to offer and here the beer truly excels: Here, the chili reveals itself and provides a sharp punch of hot spiciness that blends really well with a considerable hop bitterness and a gentle warmth from the alcohol. The finish is also quite dry, and long.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with light carbonation. Quite smooth actually, in spite of the dry finish.

Drinkability: This is not the biggest imperial stout out there, but I most say I liked it quit a bit. Perhaps, the taste could have been somewhat bolder, but it's still rather complex and well balanced; a gentle sipping beer. The very interesting and pleasant finish gives the beer an edge, a characteristic feature that makes it stand out. The hotness from the chili blends really well with the dry bitterness, and makes the experience a little more interesting. However, please note that it's not a big, unpleasant and overpowering taste of chili, destroying the gentle stout subtleties, we're taking about here, but a well balanced hot spicy twang that results in an interesting and rather successful take at the style. Recommended.

NOTE: ABV is 8,2% according the the label.

No freshness on the bottle as I pour it into a pint glass.

A- A very dark but clean looking body with that fluffy head

S- Subtle and elegant aroma of chocolate and espresso

T- A middle of the road stout that is neither too heavy, nor light. The 8.2 is well hidden, and the taste of chili is on the back of your palate and throat.

M- Not so heavy to weight you down, but not thin.

O- I do enjoy this offering from Birrificio del Ducato. The balance of smell, taste, body, and appearance make this an absolute personal favorite and one I would suggest highly for those transitioning from your standard stouts.

Not always do two of my passions coincide, beer and opera. So I couldn't let it pass and had to try it.

A: Dark brown with hints of red brick with a big billowing creamy tan head. Not a common color but interesting. I would say it's the result of the peppers that were used.

S: Hazelnuts, leather, roasted barley, milk chocolate, vanilla, and a hint of spicy peppers. Really dig the smell. Some sweetness too but everything is very subtle and delicate.

T: Lots of hazelnut and only a little of the hot feeling of the peppers. I also get some minerals in the middle of the palate but then the sweetness and spiciness follow in the finish. Very interesting brew for sure. All the flavors are pretty balanced. Very well made. I also get some smokiness. Complex and more leaning towards the sweet side which is good in order to balance the peppers.

M: Feels very smooth and creamy. A little sticky and full bodied. Goes down really well and love the feeling of the peppers, probably because I am Mexican. It reminds me of chipotle chiles with the smoke profile or of spicy Mole with roasted nuts and chocolate flavors.

O: Wasn't expecting a great brew from this. I was mostly interested in the concept of being brewed in honor of G. Verdi, one of the best opera composers of all times. Happy to have tried it and will definitely seek out another bottle. More and more the Italian breweries are getting my attention. Try it if you can!

Pours one shade from black with a two-finger brown head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving light lacing.

Smells of dark chocolate and roasted malts mostly with hints of earthy peppers. The pepper notes are very slight and I'm not sure I'd recognize it unless I knew it was an ingredient.

Tastes good. As with the smell dark and mildly bitter chocolate and roasted malt flavors dominate. Midway through the sip the peppers poke their heads out for a bit of earthiness before fading into the background before re-emerging for a bit of heat in the finish. The ending is solidly bitter.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a very smooth thickness with moderate carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I finished my glass and could have another without a problem.

Overall this was a tasty beer however I was hoping for a bit more influence from the peppers. Still, well worth a shot.

A- This beer pours a jet black body with a creamy tan head and a some floating lumps bumping against the glass then hiding back in the body. There are a few tiny bubbles stuck to the base of the glass.
S- This beer has a soft chocolate malt aroma with a dry roasted barley note to follow. Otherwise the aroma is pretty clean. There is a dark nougat and raw grain aroma that grows as the beer opens up.
T- The cream dark malt flavor is soft with a bigger roasted bitterness in the finish that has some capsicum heat to it. The heat grows and the bitterness fades as the beer opens up and the malt flavor starts to fade a bit aswell.
M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with no alcohol heat and a gentle fizz in the finish. There is a very light chili heat in the finish but it doesn't linker.
D- This beer has soft flavors with a big finish that could use a bit more malt support. The heat is subtle but all burn and not much chili flavor. My mouth wasn't hot but my lips started to burn just a bit after the last few sips.

330ml flared bottle. Made with an addition, beyond the usual suspects, of oats and spices (nature unspecified). Ol' Giuseppe appears quite melancholy in his depiction on the label.

This beer pours a solid black, with slight caramel edges at the base, and a voluminous amount of puffy, tightly foamy, and creamy mocha head, which settles rather slowly, eventually leaving some quick-melting curtains of drooping lace around the glass.

It smells of roasted caramel malt, chalky dark cocoa, sour black fruit, thin lactose, mild earthy spice, and weedy, leafy hops. The taste is lightly toasted bready caramel malt, bittersweet chocolate, fruity cherry, a touch of earthy yeast, still indistinct warming spices, and a sour lactic undercurrent, one swirling through a cup of cold, nutty espresso.

The carbonation is lively, but finely textured in its good to go frothiness, the body an aspiring medium weight, and fairly smooth, the oats registering here and there. It finishes off-dry, the sweet roasted malt meeting the challenge from the still active hops and spiciness.

With characteristics from FES, porter, and RIS alike, this is one healthy Euro-centric offering. Agreeable enough, overall, with virtually no hint of the well-integrated big ABV - and in reference to the label-maker's poetic leanings: my thirst (for big beer, anyway) is slaked, and my rancour, while not exactly bitter, is another issue altogether.

Mondiale 2009. A good aroma, bitter, even astringent. Moderate off-white head though lacey, bitter from coffee anmd additives, and a coffee story. Expresso, needs more balance. Interesting beer experiemnt, though not great RIS for my money. Not very drinkable.

Poured black with a tan head, and thicker in the foam than expected. Smelled like roasted coffee. Flavor was more complex with dark chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, and alcohol. Slight alcohol warming in the finish. Overall a fine beer, but very hearty. I'm no expert on the subject, but shouldn't this be a porter?

Serves a surprisingly robust head, very dark brown, with quite good retention. Brew is as black as a coffee bean. Lacing slides down the glass after each sip, but otherwise makes no appearance.

Heavy roasted grain notes; light cream; strong tart, dark fruit (specifically red grapes) on the finish. A slight floral note, as well.

Flavor is well represented by the nose, but with everything in very subtle proportions. There is a sharp, near-metallic sharpness up front; a light, creamy milk flavor; slight coffee bean and cacao notes; and roasted barley throughout, building to a very bitter and roasty finish.

The flavor note which stands out the most to me is the chile pepper finish, which is surprisingly sharp and hot, especially on the back-end. It makes a dry, grassy appearance up front and throughout, but it really comes through at the end.

Remarkably thin for an imperial stout. Slight foaming; lively, but almost no sting. Very strong heat down the throat from the peppers, which honestly isn't that pleasant. Fairly dry finish, with a milky stickiness that lingers in the mouth while the alcohol and pepper dry you out. An odd (but not unpleasant) juxtaposition.

As my first Italian craft beer, I can't say if the thin mouthfeel, relatively subdued flavors, and back-end burn are typical on their takes on stouts, but compared to an American Imperial Stout - arguably the benchmark - I can't really recommend this beer at the price point.

If this were marketed as a milk stout, clocking in around 4.2% instead of 8.2%, I'd likely be more generous in my ratings. The chile pepper is very well represented, but everything else just feels to subtle in its representation. Good, but far shy of greatness.

Pours black with a large tan head.
Nose shows cocoa, earthy coffee and chocolate syrup along with roasted malt underneath. Pretty delightful.
Similar rich flavours, lovely cocoa notes and roasted coffee. Perhaps a bit too sweet.
Nice creamy feel.

Appearance. Pours black with a small tan head that leaves a little lacing behind.

Smell. Molasses, light coffee, dark chocolate and a hint of vanilla, and spices.

Taste. Molasses, licorice, chocolate and a little coffee and pepper.

Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with below medium carbonation. Just a little alcohol warmth.

Overall. Nice flavours in this big stout. Everything just plays well together. I really liked it.

Bottle: Poured a deep pitch-black color stout with a large foamy head with deep dirty brown color head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of deep roasted malt with coffee notes. Taste has also loads of character with great roasted notes and some deep coffee notes with some dry black chocolate notes also noticeable. Body is quite full with great smooth texture with great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very well done with load of character though still easily drinkable. Nice mix between a cappuccino and an imperial stout.

Poured on tap at Barley Brother's into a shorty pilsner style glass. From notes.

A real nice dark walnut brown to black body, with very deep red ruby hues along the edges. A simple light tan collar is presented. Quite and impressive body color.

Great nose on this. Soft leafy like tobacco and mild light aromas of dark bitter chocolate. Powdery and also silky as well, with great earth like tones to match. Very nice aromas on this beer.

Palate follows the bouquet very nicely to match. Silky mouthfeel and palate translate the flavors wonderfully. Solid dark chocolate and soft coffee flavors wash everywhere. Aftertaste brings piping coffee warmth to match. Great simple roast character to boot, and nicely balanced.

While not explosive and huge or impressive, it's very well balanced and integrates two flavors real nicely. Excellent Imperial Stout.

Pitch black with 1/2 finger of mocha colored head. A little lacing

Smells a little like coffee, some chocolate, and roasted malt.

Intially I taste mostly coffee, chocolate, and roasted malts. The finish is roasty,hoppy, and then at the very end, spicy. The hot chilis add another dimension to this beer. Im diggin it.

Mouthfeel is thick, chewy, and creamy. Medium carbonation. Appropriate for the style.

Drinkability is good. The hot chilis definitely make this beer more interesting than your run of the mill stout. However, this beer is not worth the $10 I paid for the bottle.

Very cool looking bottle purchased at Nathaniel Square Corner Store in Rochester, NY.

Pours a dark black, with very little head, about a quarter of an inch, and not much of a head, either.

Smells like chocolate, roasted malt, and smoke. Not getting any pepper aromas on the nose.

The flavors starts out with bitter chocolate and roasted malt, with some smoky near the end. The heat from the chili peppers is not big at all, but you do eventually feel it- the heat sticks and lingers on your lips the more you drink of this 11.2 oz bottle. The alcohol is not all that present.

Medium bodied, but slightly thin and watery for an imperial stout. It strangely feels a bit more watery as it warms up, which seems against the typical. Thick creamy mouthfeel, light but present carbonation.

A very interesting stout, always cool to try a beer from a craft brewery in an atypical country. If the body was beefed up a bit, this would be amazing.

A: center pour into a snifter: obsidian pour yields opaque black beer with a fat firm chocolate mousse head

S: mellow aromas of roasty chocolate malt and espresso

T: I have to temper my enthusiasm here, because this beer is really good - the tastes and mouthfeel are a nice one-two combination - the flavors are of super mellow espresso, semisweet chocolate and hints of chili spice. Very drinkable - no hint of the 8.2 abv.

M: really creeps close to ideal - creamy smooth and easy-drinking, but the chili throws in sparks of tingliness that tantalize the tongue - leaves a little sting behind, perfectly contrasting this extremely creamy beer

O: no date on the bottle, but I've seen these sitting in the store for at least a couple of years, so they are at least that well-aged - a delightful first, recommended for stout and porter fans, chili beer fans, and advocates of good beer.

Actually my first encounter with an Italian beer. Quite expensive at my local store, but as there are only few Imperial stouts available here anyway, I decided to try it .
Coffee, roasted nuts, a little chocolate, a bit of ash even. Taste is bittersweet, as there is some caramel.
Very simlar to the guinness special export stout, but I'm searching for dark fruits. They're hard to find, unfortunately.
Smooth mouthfeel. This is a robust beer. Well balanced.
Overall i think it's a good beer, just it could be more complex and diverse.

A - Lots of bubbles, dark brown-black color.

S - Sourness, chili.

T - Mild sourness that builds as it warms. A little light tasting at first but improves as it warms.

M - Light body that could stand more feel.

O - A good beer that could use more sourness and/or chocolate tastes. Still pretty interesting. I think this would do well to age.

A: Essentially black, with a little hint of brown around the edges... a little more cola-coloured, really, with a sandy brown head that pulls back to leave a little collar of lace that lasts throughout. Lacing is quite minimal, but there are little spots of it here and there.

S + T: Chocolate is quite heavy, both on the nose and in flavour. There is a cookie-like taste that I pick up on, kind of reminding me of an experience had with Terrapin's Wake'n'Bake once upon a time. There appears to be a very soft smokiness in the aroma which I do not detect so much on the palate. Rather sweet, really... the chocolate notes aren't really the standard unsweetened dark chocolate, but rather like a chocolate chip or something a little lighter. There's a smooth scent of malts floating around, as well, which make for a nice touch. I had forgotten that this beer was brewed with chilis until I started to note the mouthfeel and noticed the little kick right on the finish. It doesn't really stand out at all, and most certainly not until it has some time to breathe and warm to an appropriate temperature. Once it comes out, though, it's a very nice touch. The more it sits, the more notable that becomes.

M + D: Smooth and somewhat creamy feeling, followed by just a little bit of a spicy kick as it finishes. Nothing intense... it's modest and pleasant. Quite a tasty stout, really, and nothing out the roof in terms of alcohol - at least as far as big stouts go. An enjoyable beer that I would look forward to again.

Pours between black and ruby brown, light brown head with a few arcs of lacing. Aroma is of milk, strangely, not lactose but milk, cocoa, umami, sugary espresso, and unsweetened cocoa. Tastes of dark malts, prunes, coffee, cookie, slight spice from the chiles, finish has cookielike malts, acidity, bready yeast, and licorice. Quite complex, I kept going back to break down the flavors again in my mind. Body is full, silky and oily, as a good stout should be. One of the best Italian craft beers I have yet to have.

Not sure why this is listed as a Foreign/Export Stout when the name clearly says Imperial Stout. It is a bit on the lower side, but it is actually pretty impressive that it is so rich for something with a relatively low ABV. The complexity and body are typically something I would expect from a higher alcohol beer. This is one Italian craft beer I would recommend trying, quite enjoyable.

Smart champagne-shaped 330ml bottle. Palm Snifter glass. Enjoyed on may´12. Pours dark brown in color with light brown, small bubbled, creamy crown. Intense chocolate malts & hints of dark fruits to the nose. Toasted malt sweet upfront. Bitter cocoa & slightly ripe fruit flavors. Full body, medium to high carbonation. Subtle warming & dry hoppy finish. Mildy toasted grains of coffee on the aftertaste. Pretty well balanced beer.

Presentation: Poured from a pry-top bottle into a tulip glass. This bottle was purchased in Italy and brought back in March of 2010 so it has a little over 6 months of aging on it.

A: Dark black liquid with a one-finger thick tan head. Reasonable lacing with respectable head retention.

S: Roasted malts with notes of cocoa and some slight sweet berry notes. Very little hop presence. Fairly decent for a stout, though the berry notes are a bit odd in my opinion.

T: This one has definitely mellowed out a bit due to the age. There is quite a bit of dark roasted malts with a pleasant amount of bitterness. There are some slight notes of unsweetened cocoa. There is a noticeable heat after you swallow which is due to the cayan peppers added in this beer.

M: While rolling the liquid around in my mouth there is a very nice silky feel in the mouth. As you swallow there is a significant dryness in the mouth.

D: This one can be enjoyed slowly but this is not what I would consider a session beer. Its enjoyable but certainly not as drinkable as some other stouts.

Notes: I really enjoyed this beer when I had it Italy and it was pretty decent now. I don't think having age on this one is a good idea; it should be drank fresh in my opnion.

I had this on-tap at Max's, served in a goblet.

Appearance: Pours a very dark brown with some red at the edges. There is a half finger of fluffy cocoa colored head that fades to a ring around the edge of the glass.

Smell: I'm picking up some chocolate, with dark fruit, chili peppers, and some roasted malt.

Taste: Slightly sweet up front with some dark chocolate and bitter roast. There is some dark fruit with a spicy pepper finish along with the roasty bitterness.

Mouthfeel: The body is thick with smooth carbonation and a mildly dry finish.

Overall: This is a really good chili stout. NIce balance and I would have another. Just enough spice to be pleasant with out dominating.
