330ml Bottle from the Ottawa LCBO for around 4$

Appearance – Hazy amber colour with an above average size fizzy off-white coloured head. There is an average amount of carbonation and there is some decent lacing. The head lasted for around 4-5 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Grains/wheat, citrus, coriander/cloves, yeast

Taste & Mouth - The beer has a high amount of carbonation. I can taste grains/bread mixed with citrus and some faint yeast. There is also some clove and ginger flavour mixed with a peppery spiciness and some caramel. It finishes with a spicy and lightly sweet aftertaste.

Overall – Definitely an above average saison. There are some nice complex flavours that keep the beer interesting throughout the glass. Not something that I'd go out my way to have again, but still a beer that I'm glad I chance to try.

11.2oz bottle to wine glass. Beautiful orange body capped by white head. Lots of carbonation. Smells fresh AND refreshing. Cracked peppercorn, lemongrass, orange zest. Spicy ginger (perhaps thanks to the label), fresh cut grass. Very high carbonation, dry finish. Lingering spicy notes. Honey, spring blossoms, Key lime. Lovely. Refreshing. Warming after feel.

Great custom bottle design.

Nuova Mattina pours a bright yellow/orange color with some haze and a small but sturdy head. Nose of apricot, huskey grain, nutmeg, rye and multigrain cereal. Light in body with some fruity, bitter and herbal hop characteristics. No alcohol presence. Refreshing and very drinkable. A well made and very enjoyable twist on the style.

Pouring a bright orange-gold with a crazy 2.5 finger head that lingers for the entire glass, Nuova Mattina is bright and refreshing to the eyes, nose, and mouth. Floral aromas with lots of honey, clove, belgian yeasts, biscuit, and hints of hibiscus waft from the glass and greet the nose.

Is it unusual to equate the taste of a beer to sunshine? Well, this is that bright and forward. There are present flavors of honey and coriander, as well as a subtle spiciness of pepper and hops. And ever so vaguely in the background, one can taste a small amount of ginger.

Overall a well made beer that is balanced and fun to drink. Recommended.

This morning's weather calls for overcast skies: Nuova Mattina's honey-golden color is smoggy while a huge, cottony cloud looms overhead. But there is some sun in the forecast: the liquid brightens intensely when held into the light. Its body never quite rids itself of the mist enveloping it, but still somehow manages to look radiant.

Though Italian, this beer smells like it's been hanging out with a group of Belgians. It has an overpowering yeastiness that with it carries notes of oven-fresh bread, but also earthy herbals and spicy phenols. Although a bit musty, the bouquet has an invigorating and inescapable lemongrass-like zest. Biscuit-y malt is strongly noted too.

The beer contains a fruity persona that falls somewhere between an orange and lemon. The citrus (and acidity of) is blunted, however, by a huge presence of toasted, biscuity malts - four different grains (three malted) in all. It's really bready and biscuity, with an oatmeal-like flavor and thickness. Though hardly sweet, this is one malty son-of-a-gun.

In all this talk about grains, the spices (ginger, coriander, green peppercorns and chamomile) go largely unnoticed. Of all those ingredients, the only one I can honestly claim to have noticed (before knowing what exactly was in there) is the chamomile; there is a strong flavor of dried flowers. And maybe, on second thought, the coriander and ginger too, though they aren't appreciated with obviousness the way they tend to be.

With its barnyard mustiness and strong yeastiness - not to mention the use of barley, wheat, rye and oats - a more true example of a farmhouse ale is hard to find. Nevermind that it comes from Italy; they have farms there too. Besides, are you really surprised that the Italians - a nation of gastronomes - turned out so capable at crafting delicious beer?!

Enjoyed on tap at the Lion's Pride while on a beerventure.

A - Poured into a tulip a clear light gold with a two finger white head that leaves heavy side lacing.

S - LOTS of honey on the nose. It dominated with sweet malts, carmel, and honey. Light lemon too.

T - More honey overwhelms the taste. There are light belgian saison yeast notes, but for the most part the saison is wiped out by the honey.

M - Very underwhelming. The mouthfeel is rather thin and watery/flat.

O - I enjoyed this as a beer, but as a saison...not too sure. Really, really liked the honey notes, but it destroyed most of the good aspects of a saison.

Poured a cloudy gold with major head and lace with a fruity bouquet for an aroma along with some yeast and touch of sweet malt. Smooth, light, well carbonated and spicy so there's a crispness to this beer. Balances with the candi sugar sweetness that is in there. Not as strong or flavorful as some saisons, but a citric hop bite that is lowkey mixes with some sour pear/white grape and hint of tropical fruit tastes. An easy to drink session beer that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Poured from the bottle into a flute glass, a somewhat cloudy golden yellow, with a huge puff of frothy white head that renewed itself on every pour. Tons of Champagne-like fizzy carbonation. Aroma was grassy with hints of spice. Very crisp on the tongue, flavors of fresh grass, light yeast, peppercorns and ginger, and lemon zest, with an underlying earthiness. Very nice. Light, not quite medium-bodied, and quite an easy drinker overall.

A. Coppery golden hues of a moderately hazy liquid. Good foamy white head that lasts and laces.

S. Chammomile. Tart strawbwrries and unripe lemons. Vanilla, dry white wine, a little barnyard. Interesting aroma.

T. Just as interesting and intense. Spicy floral wild and tart.

M. Light bodied with a thinner carbonation. Slight astringent bite.

O. Always a pleasure to taste.a zymatore. Havent had the original, but this is wild in the stylistic and literal sense.

330ml elegant mini champagne bottle - just 'New Morning' around here, i miei amici.

This beer pours a hazy, pale golden yellow hue, with a teeming, overflowing cavalcade of foamy white head, which, upon eventually settling, leaves a pockmarked limestone profile of lace around the glass.

It smells like a cross between tropical fruit salad and mildly funky white Italian cheese, with a gritty pale malt sweetness, white pepper, and some mild earthy drying hoppiness. The taste is rather multifaceted - grainy malt, some savoury spice (nutmeg and cardamom, with a twinge of black pepper), a bit of musty, yeasty funk, and leafy, earthy hops rounding things out.

The carbonation is reserved in its fizzy and frothy bite, the body an adequate medium weight, and somewhat creamy in its otherwise undeniable smoothness. It finishes just a tad off-dry, the grain still overseeing a dance floor populated with sassy yeast, fruit, indistinct table pepper dust, and wallflower hops.

A decent saison, the Euro-feel is certainly there, but not gone too far south as the production origins would suggest. Funkier than usual, style-wise, but not exactly George Clinton territory, amirite? Lots going on, and a promising offering from this upstart brewery from la terra del vino.

Another of the summer offerings from the LCBO...

A - Pours a hazy pale golden colour, two solid fingers of soapy beige head with solid retention and nice thick lacing.

S - Peppery spice, earthy notes, leafy greens, hints of lemon citrus rind and an a touch of cloves.

T - The cloves come through off the top, though a bit muddled amongst the lemon citrus notes and the leafy hops. Hints of spicing linger alongside some refreshing sour orange.

M - Lighter bodied ale that goes down smooth and finishes surprisingly dry.

O - A tasty farmhouse with the slightest spicing to set it apart from the rest. The finish was a tad too dry for my liking, but its certainly worth a try. I hate to say it, but another win for the LCBO for this summer's seasonal release.

Explosively carbonated, this was a foamer. Pleasant aroma, yielding corriander, some yeast and malts. Good tasting saison,mostly pepper and chamomile,and spicier than your average saison. smooth drinker outside of the carbonation. Worth a try.

This beer pours fairly light gold color with very good head retention and considerable lacing. The nose is impressive, showing honey, white pepper and considerable clove. Flavors replicate the nose pretty close, though the beer is a bit lighter then I was expecting. Still, I appreciate how the modest sweetness is countered very nicely by the spice and hoppy bitterness. The finish is crisp, clean and dry. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied, with a fairly long finish. Drinkability is pretty good, though the amount of spice in this beer makes drinking it down rather slow going.

Nevertheless, this is a pretty impressive saison style beer from Del Ducato.

11.2 oz. bottle, into a white wine glass,

A: Pours a cloudy medium orange with a frothy rocky white head, good retention, great lace, with almost a champagne like fizz look.

S: Green pepper dominates, very earthy (coriander), hint of flowers. Smells like a spring meadow really.

T: Ginger upfront, earthy center, and dominated by the green pepper on the back end. Definitely unique, a hard beer to describe.

M: Crisp, fairly light-bodied, medium earthy aftertaste, pretty smooth.

D: A weird beer, but once I got into it, I quite enjoyed it. I lowered the drinkablity, just because of its nature, something to contemplate on each sip. Pricey at $6, but it's definitely an experience from this Italian brewer.

An Offero glass contains this hazy, golden-orange (SRM 5-6) beer. The frothy, white head builds to one-half inch before dropping to a thin blanket.

Spices are herbal sweet with orange, light perfume, and musky yeast.

Flavors are subtle with a blend of sweet to sour to bitter in that order. Apple with ginger forms a spicy foreground, while coriander and lemon develop as it warms. The finish is long and bitter.

Carbonation is explosive from this medium bodied beer, while alcohol is light in the dry, scratchy texture.

This one is close to the style guidelines, however, just short on the character and depth one would expect. I would be pleased to try it again on a warm spring day, but, alas, that appears to be far into the future this year.

appearance: darkest of the saisons we had - murky dark straw body, thick beige head

smell: green peppercorns, ginger, chamomile and corriander. A strangely spiced saison for sure...

taste: green peppercorn provides a light amount of heat, chamomile evident in the finish. Ginger and corriander provide a nice flavor twist. Interesting, but after the fantome, thats about all it was

A very interesting beer...

Pours a cloudy, light orange with an ample foamy head that dissipates quickly. Small-bubbled carbonation continues for an impressive length of time. Complex aroma including a wide variety of herbs & spices, plus lime, tea and pepper. Unfortunately I can't distinguish the specific herbal elements (and didn't read other reviews before starting this one). The flavour starts sweets and then transitions into a surprisingly pleasant bitter finish. No sign of the Belgian yeast at all until near the very end, where it is paired with some tropical fruit tones.

Not a style I personally choose often, but a beer I’m glad to have tried - and my first foray into Italy's nascent craft beer movement.

A beauty. Had on tap at Brigantessa in South Philly. Pours a beautiful hazy yellow with hefty head that dies soon, leaving some lacing. Spring in a glass!

The smell is not as powerful as the looks- subdued nose with some funk, acidity, barn aromas, day-old milk and a rainy day in the country.

The taste is on point- all the brightness, acidity and weirdness you expect from a saison/sour. Perhaps a bit low-key, but oh-so-refreshing and delicious. Notes of pineapple and lemon peel plus some pomelo.

The mouthfeel is big on tartness and spice, could use a little more body but it is fine alright.

Overall, I love this brew. It may not have, as a previous reviewer said before, the depth or complexity yoy expect in this kind of ale, but it is so drinkable and gorgeous.

Were it not for the price ($13 a glass, minus $2 happy hour), I'd drink this all day.

A - poured into a tulip. Hazy medium orange. Not much head, but it's quite thick, with good retention.

S - pretty much like the label says: lots of ginger, some coriander, lemonade, bit of peppery yeast.

T - spices are still present, but the overall brew lacks backbone. Very pale malts, and not enough of them. Much closer to a white ale that happens to be yeasty than a typical Belgian-style saison. Still tasty, though. Well balanced throughout, finishing slightly sweet yet dry.

M - pleasant body for such a light tasting beer. not much in the way of fizz. what carbonation does remain adds to the creamy texture, which is nice, but I'd expect more action up front on the tongue with a light beer.

D - very drinkable. Not my favorite, but well worth a try if you have the chance.

Appearnace: Produced a good finger of cloudy head that produce a slight amount of lacing but retained very well. The body is cloudy like a hefe with ample a good amount of carbonation.

Smell: Fruity, as notes of lime and orange dominate the nose to a backing of caramel malt, yeast and a touch of gingerbread. It's quite potent, but it just seems a bit overdone for some reason.

Taste: There is certainly a lime undertone to the entire beer, which is a little bit strange, given no lime was added. That being said, this is a flavour explosion. Initial notes of sour apples and pears give way to a blend of spices as pepper, corriander, ginger and a floral undertone I can't place with a fruity yeast backing which ends with some out of place earthy hops.

Mouthfeel: The carbonation is good, the transistioning is good, the head is good, why the average low score? The aftertaste on this one builds and cloys like crazy. The earthy hops blend in all the wrong ways with the spicing leaving an awful aftertaste.

Drinkability: Well that aftertaste has been struggling near the end of the beer, but apart from that it's pretty good. The sour lime note I particularly enjoyed, but then again I like the taste of lime so it might put off some people. Silky carbonation that knows to stay out of the way.

Final Thoughts: I would say change what hops your are using, because that seems (I think) that is bringing the only negatives to the brew. Then again, as my first Siason maybe I'm judging something wrong. This is a strange one, but I enjoyed it. It tastes like a Beligan that's been given steroids with how fruity and spicy it tastes. Thumbs up though.

Italian brewers give me the impression that they love spices. Nuovo Mattina, made with ginger, coriander, green pepper, and chamomile, examplifies that. The cap is off, so on to the beer:

Hazy tangerine color with whispy lace and head give the first impression of the beer. The second impression is the smell; what will that give? It's interesting, but mind you, the same could be said for other saisons. There's a little bubblegum and green pepper (which at first I though I smelled roasted peanuts), and finally a trace of corinader. That's half the spices; I guess that's okay. I'm hoping there's more in the taste.

Part saison, part spiced beer. Sure, saisons can be spicy, but the added spices are giving this beer a mind of its own. A sweet citrus flavor and faint gum create the canvas which the spices will paint on. I'm definately picking up the first three spices listed, all subtle, with the green pepper being most distinct. The one chink in the armor is its mouthfeel; very light and almost watery. On the other hand, it does seem to help the drinkability.

Do you like spiced beer? If not, then Novo Mattina may not be for you. If so, then give this four spice beer a try. Imagine the food pairings that are possible.

This is a golden colored beer with light amber hues. It has an amazingly stable and firm white head. The liquid is a little cloudy with lots of 'floaties'. Nice aroma...lots of fresh fruity (peach, pear, apple) and spice. There's some yeast and very pale malt in the backdrop. Moderately sweet with some herbal hop character (as well as bitterness) in the mid-taste through the finish. Not exceptional for the style, but the beer was nonetheless enjoyable.

The colour of an orange sunset with a thin light beige head. Very little lacing and no retention.

A complex aroma of spices, citrus and yeast.

A tart, dry, almost chalky taste. The taste is a disappointment after the enjoying the aroma. Eventually a biscuit malt taste comes through with some hops in the aftertaste.

A dry feel with carbonation.

This was just OK for me.

Pours orangey amber with a massive, growing head that is threatening to turn into a mushroom cloud.
Nose shows ginger, citrus fruits, floral characters, tea and doughy yeasty notes. Also some green herbal notes.
Flavours focus on ginger but also show herbal, spicy hops.Some soft malt underneath. Pretty easy drinking stuff.
Too much carbonation.

After drinking countless beers, I figured I would give reviewing a shot. Here goes:

My bulbous bottle from Italy, as opposed to the photo, says "Nuova Mattina" across the label.

Dingy orange, cloudy, no head really, only a few translucent bubbles around the perimeter of the glass after an aggressive pour. I smell herbs, spice, fruit, tartness, and a touch of honey.

A complex saison with different layers of flavor, so I wouldn't recommend quenching your thirst with this beer as the label suggests. Also with a price tag of $8.99 for 11.2 oz., you'll want to enjoy it. I sense the ginger and green pepper, but it must be the chamomile that gives it the slickness after the spice. Some tart cherry and it all ends with dry bitterness.

Nice medium body, but carbonation was very low. Kept craving a little more prickliness.

Overall enjoyable. I wouldn't hesitate to drink this again, though the price tag will more than likely prohibit that.
