A - Dark chocolate with blueberry accents. No head or foam.

S - Blueberry pie, lactic acid, slight acetone. Tart nose to it.

T - Balsamic vinegar with a slight funky, almost gym sock presence to it. Barely any blueberry but lots of acetone.

MF - Tart with tons of carbonation to it. Good funk and dry finish

O -I didn't enjoy this one too much as the gym sock presence with the acetone threw it off.

This was one of our New Year's beers. The venue was Trappist Provisions in Oakland - the new satellite bar of the excellent Trappist, Oakland.

We did their list, beer by beer, from BFM to Black Hole, and it was varied and mostly marvelous.

The only loser on the list was this Italian fiasco. We ordered it for the sake of completion, to make sure we tried everything. We knew full well that anything called "My Blueberry Nightmare" is probably a mistake. But how big? Well read on...

So the beer was pretty enough. Trappist Provisions will provide a masterful pour no matter what. The Ducato had a good thick chocolaty head, a rich dark color, and was picture perfect. But take a whiff....that's where the problems begin.

The taste and the smell.... I'm reminded of the Violet Beauregarde scene in Willy Wonka. The blueberry is a giant swollen overpowering mass. Charlie and Grandpa could rip off all your shit while you aren't looking because all you can do is pay attention to the giant blueberry while the Oompa Loompas run around trying to mitigate the disaster.

And then when the blueberry has died down, there's the chili flavor. It's subtle. Not spicy. Just a touch of acrid bite at the back of your throat. And that's really not good. It's less of a flavor than just a feeling, like a touch of acid reflux much earlier in the evening than you were planning. Foreshadowing in literature = good. Foreshadowing in digestion = bad.

So, overall this beer is a gimmicky mix of overpowering elements. And not a very well considered mixture at that. In fact, there might be a beer under there, but I wouldn't know.

Sorry Italy, we gave this beer the boot.

Had this one on a past ticking trip to Asheville! Served from tap into a sampler snifter. Poured a massively dark brown (almost black) with a one finger tan head that subsided to a minimal amount very slowly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, fruit, blueberry, tart, sour, and subtle roasted malt. The flavor was of sweet malt, blueberry, blackberry, tart, sour, and fruit. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a fairly good brew. I really rather enjoyed the fruit aspect that was going on this one. As the name would suggest blueberry played a substantial role in this brew. Since blueberry is a very delicate flavor I was surprised at how well they were able to keep in forward in the brew throughout. I would definitely enjoy having this one again and would not hesitate to suggest it to others.

A: pours black with a finger of tan head that fades into a frothy ring with a little lacing.

S: acetic vinegar notes up front with blueberries, funk, sour fruit, peaty Scotch, smoke, and a myriad of other aromas. Very interesting.

T: acetic vinegar here as well with musty and funky flavors, smoke, sour and tart fruit, peaty Scotch, and medicinal flavors. Very interesting, though the medicinal flavors are a bit off-putting.

M: medium body with low carbonation, this beer just avoids being watery.

O: a very interesting beer that is is not quite successful. There's so much going on in this beer, but the strong medicinal and acetic flavors hold it back.

One of the most interesting sour stouts I've had. Blueberries, hot peppers, and aged in oak.

A: Deep purple/black. Looks like a stout with a small tan head accompanying the opaque body.

S: Tart berries, vinegar, smoke, and some spice from the peppers.

T: Everything hits at once. Sour berries, vinegar, smoke, oak, cocoa, and some faint ripe blueberries. This is then followed by a very pronounced hot pepper note that sticks around for a while.

M: medium-bodied, light carbonation

O: Definitely not for everyone, but certainly something everyone should try. A bit all over the place, but the chaos added to the intrigue. This is an extremely sour/funky/spicy stout. Every sip was more interesting which made it hard to put down.

Poured into wine glass.

A - Nice blue-black color, with blue around the edges. Small fizzy bubbles. Coke-like appearance.

S - Blueberries, some sourness. Has mellowed over time as it has aged several months in keg.

T - Blueberries, fairly substantial sourness, dark fruits. Mild sweetness. Very satisfying.

M - Medium body. Just a touch of creaminess to make it go down more slowly.

O - This beer purportedly ages well with less vinegary and acidic taste than when fresh. Smooth, fruity, delicious.

Cheers to Goblinmunkey7 for sharing this

Review from notes, 7/4/14

Appearance: Dark, deep brown, with some vague hints of purple and black - pours with a small, off-white head, fades to virtually nothing, leaves virtually no lacing

Smell: More like a bad dream than an actual nightmare - at first, kind of smells like a port - rich, berries, grapes, sugar - more of a generic "berry" than a blueberry aroma - some serious funk, sourness, bacterial weirdness, and tons of sharp, acidic vinegar - wood and whiskey, smells more boozy than the reported ABV - sweet, sour, bizarre

Taste: Weird to a remarkable degree - rich, rich berry flavor - old blueberry skins, grapes - chili peppers are far from obvious, with some heat that might actually just be the alcohol (or one of the other weird flavors in here) - sour and extremely funky - sharp, acidic sourness, straight-up vinegar, and some wet, damp, musty lactic funk - oak and whiskey, with some acetone and fusel alcohols - mild stout at the base with some chocolate and roast - boozy, weird finish with some lingering heat and sour - decidedly impressive in the way that this actually becomes increasingly unpleasant as I slowly drink the 6 ounces or so

Mouthfeel: Full body, thick and syrupy - finishes with some heat, sourness, and booze

Overall: My notes say, "I don't even know what to conclude"

This is a bizarre beer to say the least. The brewers apparently just decided to throw everything they could imagine into this beer and the result is a borderline hot mess. I thought it had some charm when I first tasted it, but it just kept getting worse.

I had this on-tap at Max's during Baltimore beer week. Served in a tasting glass.

Appearance: The beer pours a dark purple/brown color. More purple shows up when the light hits the beer. The head is a weird tan/purple/blue color. As the head fades it leaves a thick ring around the pour and some lacing on the glass.

Smell: Reminds me a lot of blueberry vinegar. I'm getting a bunch of that dark sour/red berry type smell. There is also a hint of red wine. Very aggressive.

Taste: This one is very sour. I'm not picking up much alcohol at all. The blueberries show up more than I thought they would. I'm also getting some red wine and sour vinegar. The finish has an acidic burn to it like vinegar.

Mouthfeel: The body is on the thick side with tons of tingly carbonation that manages to ve quite smooth. The finish is dry.

Overall: This is super sour and there was no hint of the high abv. The finish burns quite a bit. Overall I liked this and would have more.
