Served in a 10oz glass, from cask, for $8 - and well worth the $8.
Eric, the mad genius brewer at Hollister, seems to be devoting some good effort to his barrel aging program. This big imperial stout was aged for quite a while in (I think) fresh Woodford Reserve bourbon barrels. I forgot to ask how long it was aged, but Eric mentioned that it actually ended up aging longer than he liked. Because of this, the bourbon character is rather pronounced..
Presented in its 10 ounce glass, this cask RIS has a beautiful, creamy, tan head that never dissipates. The aroma is dominated by bourbon - maybe some notes of chocolate in here too.
The taste is still relatively strong in the bourbon character and is nicely backed up by dark chocolate, vinous and berry aspects, a bit of roasted character and some alcohol heat.
The mouthfeel is surprisingly light - given the 12.5% ABV - and smooth. The cask presentation no doubt helps out with this.
For a 12.5%, bourbon barrel aged imperial stout, this is rather drinkable (unfortunately, you can't have much before you start feeling it).
I loved this. One of Eric's best, in my opinion. I love a barrel aged beer with a lot of barrel character, so this was truly a treat - especially with the cask treatment. If you find yourself up in Goleta in the next few days, give it a try. If not, he's got some more barrels back there so I am sure there are some more treats that will be coming out in the future.
