Bitter, sharp, lightweight beer.

Nice amber color in the pint glass. Seemingly fragrance free. Decent but modest head, slight lacing. Thin and harsh. Flavors are really terse, no-nonsense. No body to speak of, but without the refreshing watery taste of many lighter beers. If this is an English bitter it's been blown up like a big ugly stucco McMansion. Kind of a dead end, flavor-wise.

Tasted at Toronado on 30th Street in San Diego since I hadn't tried the brewery before.

Served in a 16oz. nonic.

Appearance: Crystal clear, golden body with a creamy, sticky, white crown. Head shows decent retention and drags cobweb-like lace. Not quite as dark as I expected, but otherwise looks pretty damn good.

Smell: Cracker, lemon zest, and moist vegetation kick things off. Buttered toast and grass eventually emerge, and the overall aroma gets quite a bit sweeter as the beer warms. Smooth and mild overall.

Taste: The malt character isn't nearly as pronounced as it should be. Lemon and grass are the two most prominent flavors, and they combine for a rather sharp taste. Earthy bitterness also plays a large role, and leads to a lingering aftertaste. Faint graininess, sugar, and bread crust barely shine through. This drinks far more like a west coast pale ale than an ESB.

Mouthfeel: Light in body with fine carbonation and a lingering bitter finish. Far from clean and certainly more hop-forward than malt-forward. Far from ESB-like.

Drinkability: This isn't a bad beer, but it definitely misses the mark style-wise. That said, it isn't a good beer either. Whatever, it worked.
