Well, this one looks interesting. Cool story on the label regarding its namesake (additionally, Frederiksen is the last name of a couple of my cousins...also of partial Danish heritage, so thought I'd see how this one turns out). Impy pint, 500 ml...whatever ya wanna call it. Decent pffft of the cap so it sounds nicely carbonated. Into the Portsmouth snifter it goes.

Inky-dark espresso brown on the pour with a fair amount of clarity - in the snifter it gets more opaque and looks a whole lot more viscous. Head is a full finger and then some of maple candy/banana nut bread. Stuff really looks exquisite. Head retention is decent, lacing is very good. Head at first has that doughy coagulation going on but this down a fair bit.

The deep, dark, chocolate roast on this is very subtle yet creamy. Patent tannins provide a good backbone but don't become husky and astringent. There is a quotient of dryish booze here - it's additive rather than a nuisance. It reminds me of other Scandinavian stouts in its attention to detail. Well-hopped yet not obnoxious...Warrior? Target? Who knows - quite grassy with a little pine in there for good measure.

Lighter in body than expected. Not clammy though. The hop profile and dryness emerge in spades here - mild sweetness of booze in the background and on the finish. Deep, dark roast and patent malt do very well in this setting. Again, the "coldness" of the Scandinavian impy prototype comes along but one must admire the craftsmanship.

Well-balanced and of moderate weight for the style. Drinks rather easily and provides a dry, slate-like char on the palate while warming you back up on the slightly boozy and quite hoppy finish.

Now look out, 'cause this deal packs a wallop at 10.5% ABV. The alcohol isn't exactly hidden, so best maybe with a big fat steak...or as a nightcap. Precision Scandinavian craftsmanship makes this one a nice change-up. Very well-constructed.

On tap at the Avenue Pub, NOLA

A: Obsidian black. A tight tan head with great retention. Curtain-y lacing.

S: Intense. Coffee, vanilla, chocolate and strong bourbon.

T: Damn! Sip and be awed. The coffee rolls in, then vanilla and chocolate pervade, followed by a wallop of bourbon. This is a commanding stout, that begs to be savored. Robust and rich.

M: Medium to heavy with medium carbonation.

O: Glad I got to try this one. One of the better RIS's I've had. Amager kicks ass .

just more proof that we dont need a barrel or vanilla beans to make a massive and truly mellow and delicious imperial stout. this is classic, but a little different than the american ones, tons of body but not with all the sappy sugary texture. i love that, its almost dry in the end, dark chocolate and chocolate malt team up with maybe even some dark wheat for a really interesting flavor and ingredient profile that is distinct to this beer. after trying the mikkeller collaborations, i had to have this. it almost has a coffee flavor on the front end, but there is also very little bitterness. just grain done right, and i admire the seemingly simplistic nature of this beer, as well as its well hidden alcohol content and its price point. full bodied but not sticky and palate coating, different in that way. i wish for perhaps just a bit more carbonation, or at least carbonation retention, it seems flat after just a few minutes. opens up with temperature, this is a beer for a big wide snifter and a couple of lazy yet contemplative hours.

On draft at Global Brew. Hefty aromas of dark chocolate, vanilla, roasted malt. Poured jet black with a thick tan head, some retention and good lacing. Deep, rich flavors-chocolate, coffee, roasted malt. Smooth on the palate. Long finish. Really nice stout.

Coal-black body with a rich, foamy, thick, light tan head. Roasted and charred grains, anise, tobacco, bitter chocolate and cocoa all wrapped up loosely together within the aroma. Rich malt sweetness emphasizing the highlights alluded to and reinforcing the characters noted in the smell. Heavy bodied; semi-sweet/dry finish.

Depth and nuanced aroma and flavor notes swirl about with this big beer. It really dances on the edge of decadence, perhaps not quite getting there, but good enough for me. Not quite at the 'world class' level for me, but without a doubt, luscious and sumptuous in all its dark glory.

500 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Reviewed from notes.

Appearance - Black, but opaque at the edges. Khaki head. Big discrete bubbles.

Smell - Heavily roasted malt, pushing burnt. Dark coffee. Some grassy aromas. Dark fruits and licorice.

Taste - Intense dark roasted malt. Bitter chocolate and coffee. Hop bitterness in the back end. Some lactose, maybe? Lends a creaminess.

Mouthfeel - Well carbonated and nicely bittered. The lactose lingers, though.

Overall - The lactose smooths it out, but I don't like the flavors it adds. Otherwise, really nice.

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a quarter finger high dark tan that quickly transitioned to lots of bubbles covering the surface and eventually only a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate chocolate malts, roasted malts and licorice are present in the nose.
T: The taste has initial flavors of licorice with strong notes of roasted malts that are most prominent towards the finish and linger through the aftertaste along with a light to moderate amount of bitterness. No alcohol is perceptible. Hints of chocolate malts become noticeable as the beer warms up.
M: It feels medium- to full-bodied and a little thin on the palate with a low to moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is quite easy to drink considering its strength because the alcohol is well hidden from the taste. It seemed like the taste might have tasted a little more complex if it had a little more carbonation.

Pours a black color. 1/2 inch head of a tan color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of alcohol, sweet malt, roasted malt, hint of cherry, hint of chocolate, hint of hops, and a hint of wood. Fits the style of a Russian Imperial Stout. Mouth feel is smooth and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of roasted malt, sweet malt, alcohol, hint of hop, hint of coffee, hint of chocolate, and a hint of wood. Overall, good appearance, blend, body, and complexity.
