When poured into the glass you will instantly sense that Hr. Frederiksen is a gentleman with both potency and a huge personality. Dark as Hr. Frederiksen's humor, this imperial stout is inspired by the American imperial stouts with it's dense and creamy light brown head that leaves nice lacings in the glass while the head reluctantly dissipates. We are willing to admit that we went crazy with the malts in this beer. A massive 8 different types of malts were used, and it is the dark and heavily roasted ones that give the beer it's color and almost extreme full body - this is almost a meal in a bottle. The bitterness is also delivered by the heavily roasted malts backed up by the American Centennial hops. Oh yes, Hr. Frederiksen is an experience which should be enjoyed slowly, but in return he will last all night warming you with his alcohol and challenging charm. We have named this beer after a good friend, without whom, Amager Bryghus would not be what it is today.

Purchased at the BSF bar, GBBF 2010; bottle-conditioned in a long-neck, slim 500ml brown bottle, Batch No. 235, BB 04/2015, served cool in Gulden Draak's tulip-shaped sniffer.

A: pours a super dark hue, nearly black even, topped with a marvellously-lasting thick and tight tan froth, like brilliantly aerated milk froth, leaving even sheets of laces along the way. Black beauty.
S: absolutely enchanting... the aroma is like a melting pot of various kinds of malts - vanilla-ish semi-sweet chocolates, ground sweetened peanuts, hazel nuts, crushed calcium pills, oatmeal biscuits, cocoa powder, kidney bean mash, sweet coffee - laced with black date jam, a mild touch of musk (esp. following a swirl), an even milder touch of banana-oil like esters, flowery hops, a wedge of slightly burned leftover roast beef and salty-sweet Taiwanese soy sauce extract... Harmony. A sheer bliss. So well bottle-conditioned this is...
T: the full-bodied, silky-smooth and super-creamy swallow of black malts, coffee syrup, and complex chocolaty-nutty maltiness is followed closely by a restrained dose of black prune-ish, date-ish and even black cherry-skin-ish fruitiness, while the spicy hop bitterness mingles well with the smoky & charred aroma of black/roast malts. Lightly chewy comes the lingering mouthfeel of hop tannins and roast woodiness. Not as terribly bitter as an American RIS, the aftertaste is definitely a harmony and shows only a necessary level of bitterness to remind my tastebuds to yearn for yet another sip... The finish is quite interesting, like Chinese root-herbs mixed with the old tannic feel as of dried tangerine peels & sun-dried chillies, semi bitter-sweet, salty-sweet & semi-spicy. The wonderful charred aroma lingers in the finish, where the dry-ish mouthfeel knows no end.
M&D: the mouthfeel is consistently smooth & creamy, and the carbonation is definitely in its right place, lifting a fuller-than-full body that surprisingly never goes overly heavy. This ale surely tastes more like an American Strong Stout than anything else, but the drinkability is such that, it's so easy to overlook the alc. strength that I mindlessly treaded into the dangerously heavenly barley field with an empty stomach... ouch! A marvellous stout all in all.

Amager Bryghus “Mr. Fredericksen”
€8,20/44 cl can coded “Batch nr.: 2919 Bedst før: 6-2026” @ La Buena Cerveza, Madrid, ES

Look: Opaque black body beneath a creamy head of tan. The head retention and lacing are very good considering the strength. Sediment can be seen at the base of the glass.
Smell: Malty, and like cold black coffee with some resinous, piney, and citrusy hops (Tomahawk, Columbus and Centennial are listed).
Taste: As the aroma suggests with additional caramel, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, ashen roastiness, and a touch of coconut. The hops come through clearly as well and a solid bitterness anchors it and leads to a dry and hoppy finish. The alcohol has a presence and plays a part in the experience but it’s actually very well heeled for being 10.5% ABV.
Feel: Medium bodied on the fuller side and somewhat smooth with a moderate to median, fine-bubbled carbonation. It could be smoother but for the alcohol and “hop bite”, which is a fair trade-off.
Overall: Not knowing exactly what I had in my hands as the front of the label simply reads “IMPERIAL STOUT” I was pleasantly surprised to find that it reminds me of some of the American West Coast Imperial stouts that started showing up around 1998. Very nicely brewed.

Rerate, 500 ml bottle, batch #441, will soon be available at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 10.5%. Black colour, large to moderate tan head. Strong roasty aroma, notes of coffee, hints of vanilla and dark chocolate. Medium sweet and roasty flavour, same impression as upon first sample. No change of score.

Original rating: At Copenhagen Beer Festival. Pitch black colour. Aroma of vanilla and chocolate, also roasty coffee notes. Roasty flavour, again with notes of coffee, vanilla and chocolate. Jolly good stuff.

Picked up at Whole Foods at the Domain, North Austin. This beer was different than many of imperials in this category. First, it had a pretty foamy 1.5 finger head, many of these beers are pretty flat. Second, it was not jet black but has some amber hue to it. Most importantly the taste is much different. Far more heavy malt and toasted (vs. sweet) caramel came out in this beer. In some ways it drank more like a quad. I really enjoyed this hybrid quad/stout flavor profile. And as others have said, very full mouthfeel in this beer.

Black clear with reddish hue. Ivory foam, 3 finger tall. Moderate retention, frothy, leaving excellent lacing. Moderate aroma of dried fruits, plums, rich malty chocolate aroma, alcohol. High malty sweet, aggressively roasted coffee flavor. Chocolate, dry fruits, high bitterness - rather hoppy but also coming from roasted malt. Oily, chewy, full body. Medium bitter-sweet aftertaste. Bit warm. Harsh. But alcohol well covered.

Delicious, too roasty for my tongue.

From Cervezalandia. In Teku glass. Playing Costume Quest. It gives an initial impression of excellent balance. Then alcohol starts to be noticiable but not bothering. However, it ends affecting the head. Not sweet for a RIS but fairly bitter
