A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a deep, black color and a thick consistency. There was an inch of creamy, tan-colored, long-lasting head and very good lacing.

S: Smelled of dark chocolate, coffee, alcohol and roasted malt.

T: A subtle, underplayed taste. Consisted of coffee, dark chocolate and roasted malt. Doesn't have as boozy an alcohol taste as others of the style, but is still very tasty.

M: A well carbonated beer with a smooth, dry finish. Full-bodied.

D: This is a very drinkable, very likable beer. It's flavorful, well made and easy to drink.

Thanks to Bosse and his brother.

Bottle into a tulip.

Dark brown pour with a light tan head, ok retention and lacing, but nothing special...The aroma is super strong, tons of woody alcohol from start to finish, a touch of vanilla and coffee. Pretty decent over all, but I figure with more age this could smell really special once the wood dies down...The taste is also pretty strong, once again dominated by a lot of wood, alcohol has died down. Coffee becomes much more prevelant which is good to help balance out the wood. The coffee is a little roasty and bitter, I really liked the taste more the aroma, at the end too much alochol though...Feel is nothing special, decent drinkability as the wood hurts it.

Overall, a pretty tasty RIS. Nothing to go search out or trade for but if you see it, go with it.

A: This beer pours black, with a very brown large longlasting head with very small bubbles. Lots of lace.

S: Heavy roasted malt, bitter almonds. Surprisingly weak smell.

T: Heavy roasted chocolate malt with bitter hops and dried dark fruit. Dark bitter chocolate and coffee - very complex.

M: The aftertaste is both sweet and bitter/dry. And lasts all nigth! The body is powerful and the carbonation is moderate.

D: Very well tasting. I had the mrs. (Frederiksen) earlier to night, watching the world cup qualifires (soccer) between Denmark and Sweden. I poured this one in the last minutes of the game - Denmark won the game with 1-0 - and Sweden losts it's chances to go to the world cup...
But the beer is really nice...

500 ml bottle. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with a half inch tan head that sticks around for a little while, and there's also a decent amount of lacing. It smells like roasted malt, coffee, licorice, chocolate, and some dark fruit. The brew tastes like roasted malt, dark fruit, nuts, coffee, licorice and chocolate. There's a nice lingering bitter finish. Mouthfeel/body is medium, with low/moderate carbonation. I think this is a good brew, worth a try. $9.99 a bottle.

500ml Bottle from the Ottawa LCBO for $7

Appearance - Dark brown colour with an average size frothy beige head. I can't make out the amount of carbonation showing and there is some fair lacing. The head lasted for over 5 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, hops

Taste & Mouth - There is a below amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, chocolate, and coffee. There is also some vanilla, hops, and a bit of a dark fruit flavour.

Overall - The fruity notes remind me a bit of a baltic port, and the hops give it a american black ale kind of taste. A little something from everyone with this beer. It's amazing how well hidden the booze is too. It has a pretty well balanced flavour and it is very drinkable. Pricey but worth it.

Has a rich, oily, smoky aroma with undertones of unsweetened chocolate, fine roast coffee and molasses. It pour a deep, chocolaty sable with a thick, fine-bubbled, fluffy tan head. Rich flavor has strong unsweetened chocolate component along with tones of roast coffee and molasses plus a teensy bit of hop bitterness. Texture is smooth and oily, tingly and edgy.

Black as ink with a big, fluffy, tan head. Good head retention. There is nothing to say as this is close to a perfect appearance for a RIS.

Roasty, bitter chocolate and earthy hop aromas are all over this beer. A little hint of citrus is in the background along with a hint of smoke.

This is a bitter, roasty stout with enough malt to give it power and body but with sufficient attenuation and dryness to make it eminently drinkable and delicious. There are some bitter cacao notes and a hefty dose of hop bitterness to round out the flavours along with a moderate fruity ester in the finish that smoothes out the flavour profile. Very complex.

Incredibly dry with lots of almost astringent roast. Medium body with moderately-high carbonation. Good.

A solid RIS with lots going on and plenty of enjoyable flavours. The extreme roast dryness is possibly a little overbearing and a touch more sweetness and malt would do this beer some good. Overall though, a top beer.

16.9oz bottle

A- Poured into a snifter. Pours a dark black color with a tan head that leaves a good amount of lacing.

S- The aroma is fantastic. The malts are dark and roasted with a lot of chocolate in the aroma as well.

T- The taste like the aroma starts out with the dark roasted malts. Some sweet chocolate flavors start to come in around the middle. Finally the finish features a good amount of bitter chocolate flavors. Very nice progression of flavors from beginning to end.

M- The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation. The body is a little thinner than expected.

D- Overall, this is a really tasty Imperial Stout that is very drinkable considering the high ABV. Definitely worth a try!

Pours a beautiful viscous black with a big thick tan head that recedes very slowly and leaves thick clumps of lacing on the sides, maintaining a large cap throughout.

The aroma dark roasted malts, bitter espresso and some licorice sweetness. There is also a slight smokiness underneath.

Man, this is textbook RIS and in the best way possible. It's supported by the huge roasted, almost smoked, black malts. Throw in some cocoa, coffee and anise and you've got yourself one tasty stout.

The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied and, like the look, very viscous, smooth and highly carbonated for the style.

I've been looking forward to trying this one and it didn't disappoint at all. It's a big, seriously toasty RIS that is spot-on for the style.

Dark black with slightly brown corners and a small but dense tan head. Roasty chocolate/coffee aroma, typical. Flavor is extremely roasted, tending toward burnt, with ashes and coffee and dark chocolate galore. Once the palate acclimates to the crushing roasted bitterness, some complex caramel, chocolate and alcohol notes come through. Big and bruising on the tongue, slick at times.

Mmmm, dark and rich like my daddy. Poured at a good temperature with an average size, foamy, tan head that soon settles and some lace. Color is a clear, very dark, almost opaque black red. Aroma is roast, dark ripe fruit, malt, cocoa. Flavor's like nose, sweet on top, followed by bitter. Body is very rich with som bitter high points. Finish is like flavor, long, and very boozy.

Dark black which probably won't come as a surprise to anyone. It smells roasty, very malty, almost smoky, not bad. The flavor is dead on American style RIS, roasty, fruity, vinous but somehow not spectacular. This could easily have come out of an American brewery but for the price I'll have to choose the American alternative.

The man known as Gunhaver reached deep into the cellar to pull this one for our weekly tasting. Wonderful hard to get treat thanks!

A: Pours a dark dark black hue with a 1/2 finger head. The retention is as good as it gets with hints of lace teeming down the glass.

S: Booze, booze, and more booze. Is this beer? They swung for the fences with this one and knocked it out of the park like Big Poppi did last night against my Rays. Behind the booze is a very dark roasted malt, burnt coffee, and a touch of smoke.

T: The booze really carries over to the taste as well. This is one big beer. Hints of chocolate show thru though along with very bitter coffee. A touch of bittering hops can be detected as well.

M: Rather thin considering the style and boldness of this beer.

D: If you like booze, you will like this. Not the most drinkable, but still rather enjoyable.

Thanks Haver for this rare gem! Glad you were kind enough to share.

Bottle. Pours inky black with a thick chocolate head. Aroma of bitter chocolate, rich sweet malt, and alcohol. Flavor is a nice blend of chocolate and rich sweet roasted malt. Alcohol is well hidden. Very smooth palate. Definitely a very good impy. Not very complex, but very smooth so it wins points there.

A very chocolate-forward Russian Imperial Stout, with all the heft associated with the style. Dark and semi-sweet chocolate, laced with espresso notes. Some lightly charred notes lurk in the background. Alcohol is a bit warming, but no boozy notes. Overall a very well done RIS.

Thanks to Phyl21ca for this bottle

Well I liked this RIS a lot but something kept me from ranking it in my top tier and as I sipped the jet black brew it occured to me that the beer is almost too full of flavour with some sharp notes on the finish( maybe a few years in the cellar would soften it). The best Impys are big complex but also smooth and luscious. This beer had all the right notes but lacked some of the true melding of flavours that really make this style amazing

The brew pours a dark cola hue with beautiful carbonation that leaves behind a creamy mocha laced two finger head and some very sporadic lacing, the smell is a combination of bitter chocolate, dark coffee ,dark fruits and boozy alcohol,it has an above medium bodied mouthfeel which feels silky smooth with average carbonation and has tastes of dark bitter chocolate, alcohol laced dark expresso and finishes with a dark berry, dark swiss chocolate bitterness and overall its a very decent intriging drop that i will finish but could not consume all night, definately a dessert drop thats for sure.

An opaque black pour, a brown head that fades to a ring around the edge. Roasted malt, coffee with a good amount of dark chocolate in the aroma. Tastes of burnt malt, coffee and anise. Hints of chocolate increase slightly as it warms. Not quite creamy mouthfeel. Just not quite a 4.5 in the taste department because it was a bit hot and a bit too bitter. Drinks quite well, as it is not overly heavy, like many from this region of the world. I think this would mellow out into an excellent RIS, but for the money I probably won't buy another one to age and find out. This will have to just remain a very good imperial for me.
