Aged bottle shared with friends. Pours an opaque dark brown almost black color like oil with similar viscosity and khaki colored head. Chocolate, dark roasted malt, and some coffee on the nose; follows onto the palate. Full bodied. Finishes with plenty of roast and chocolate.

10.01% lol. Label reads 10%, will I taste the difference? Didn't know it was 'retired', but this one does have some some age on it. Let's say most likely... 24-30 months old.

A - 500ml pours blacker than black blacks with a thin tan head that dissipates rather quickly. A thin ring and wispy cap retain for most of the time. Quite a bit of visible sediment.

S - Nice chocolate and some good vanilla tones too, dark fruits, not much roast. Some aged-stout-cardboard things going on but good.

T - Some more roast+coffee grounds here but still very much a big ol malty chocolate bomb. Nice vanilla still coming through which adds alot. Definitely a little citrusy hop kick going on in there too.

M - Lightly carbonated, quite viscous, creamy and smooth. Light oxidized flavors come out but don't really detract. Alcohol is quite well-hidden.

O - Age definitely is taking its toll on the flavor and feel but perhaps it's done some smoothing out as well - quite drinkable (500ml was no problem solo) and overall a pretty nice malt profile. The big chocolate/vanilla malt interplay is great. That being said, I'll be drinking my other bottle sooner rather than later.

Appearance: dark brown, clear; mocha-coloured head, dense and fine, like a marshmallow

Aroma: vanilla, some spice, maybe nutmeg, clove

Taste & Mouthfeel: intense roasted malt, almost burning, which coupled with a surprisingly hoppy finish almost makes this feel like more of an imperial IPA; vanilla again, raisin, prune; the expected chocolate and coffee flavours aren't present at first, it's really all heavy and bitter roast malt and dark, macerated fruits; over time, balance establishes, sweet malts and bitter chocolate growing more assertive

Overall: always intense, but great balance in the end, if fairly straightforward flavours
