Bottle, poured into tall pint glass. Nice head when poured. Dark black in appearance. Aroma of coffee and a dark chocolate. Some hops in smell, and you could tell this is a higher alcohol beer. Taste isn't as bold as others in this style. Roasted malts, light coffee, and chocolate tastes...not as strong as expected. Good beer, but not a great one.

the little relative of the hr frederiksen, some part of me likes this more, just a bit more drinkable, but still really intensely flavored. the danish seem to have this big stout style dialed in perfectly, especially on the grain front. this is a nice bit of special dark, roasted barley, and chocolate malt. more roast in the taste, more chocolate malt sweetness and caramel touch in the nose. the beer is ultra dark, intimidating almost, really really dense looking, with an inch of light brown head and visible carbonation when agitated. great bitterness and woody centennial hop character to this, coming out really vibrantly in the finish, which exacerbates and ramps up the bitterness of the roast. maybe oats in this thing too, just a touch of front end sweetness, with all the body in the world. it may be less alcoholic than the hr fred, but its not a smaller beer, extremely intensely flavored by both grain and hops, and its real bitter in the center of my tongue after the swallow. this beer is delicious, perfect for a chilly night any time of year, and honestly worthy of a bit more praise than it gets. full bodied, dry as a dessert, a real treat.

Pours a viscous dark chocolate brown color that appears pitch black and completely opaque in the glass with a two finger beige head that slowly settles into a lasting cap/ring. Streaks of soapy lacing left behind.

Surprisingly hop forward aroma for the style with a strong earthy pine presence that's countered by sweet and roasted dark malts. Prominent spicy, grassy hops with hints of pine needle and spruce tip followed by dark chocolate, caramel, coffee bean and toast. As it warms, the malt characteristics come to the forefront but it still has too strong of a hop presence for my preference.

On the fuller end of medium bodied with a strong earthy hop presence that slightly overpowers the complex malt profile. Dry and bitter with lots of resinous pine and spicy, grassy hops that linger over the sweet and roasted notes into a bone dry finish. As it warms, the malts become stronger with hints of burnt toast, dark chocolate, robust coffee bean, caramel, toffee and oatmeal but the hop bitterness still dominates. A bit one dimensional with lots of bitterness and almost acrid roasted malt. The ABV is well masked but it could use some sweetness for balance. This is supposed to be a toned down Hr. Frederiksen but I find it tougher to drink.

Simply one of the best looking and aromatic imperial stouts I've tasted in recent years. Appearance this good is rare. Deep black with dark brown ENORMOUS head. This isn't some pansy American attempt at an Imp stout that has little to no head. This thing is gorgeous. Nose is luxuriously rich in roasty notes, dark/bitter chocolate, and molasses from the jar. Palate is chocolately bitter with a roasty character that is savory. However, it's rather easy drinking for the style. Finish is long with molasses.

Short live head leaves a collar. Beer is a dark brown. Minimal lacing.

Big roasty aromas. Some coffee.

A lot of roast going on here. Slight mintiness. Pretty easy drinkig for 7%abv

Medium Mouthfeel, lower end of carbonation.

Good time roast in the one that i enjoyed. Recommended for stout fans.

A deep brown/black brew, a tan head that leaves little lacing. Good curtains though.

Smelling of Marzipan, figs, burned toast and milk chocolate.

Sweet, burnt sugar and bread, sweet licorice, chocolate and chocolate liqueur.

Little carbonation, soft and sticky, a big body, a long dry ashy finish.

Really good after dinner.

500 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Nearly pitch black body with a small, tan head. The bubbles are more Coca-Cola looking than beer looking, but when it settles it has a nice foamy ring that looks more familiar.

Smell - Roasty malts and some chocolate, but I swear I smell some lactose sweetness, which puts me off. Not an overwhelming aroma, but nice.

Taste - Roasty malts and some chocolate. Good flavors for what it has, but not a lot of complexity. The finish gets bitter and a little grassy. Combined is a sweetness that again I swear is lactose, but isn't off-putting the way it was in the aroma.

Mouthfeel - I like my bitter stouts to be thicker. This one has the bitterness of an RIS, but not the feel of it. Something to carry the stout flavors over the hop finish would be nice.

Overall - Not bad, not incredible. I'm looking forward to the Hr. Frederiksen.
