Poured into Hill Farmstead Tulip glass.
Appearance: black bodied beer with 3 fingers of tan white head. Head has a lot of staying power and slowely drops down to an uneven cap leaving plenty of thick lacing on the glass.
Smell: pine and grapefruit rind hops. roasty malts that smell more ashen than roasty.
Taste: starts off with mild bitterness that has an increasing bitterness after each sip. The beer finishes with moderate bitterness; lots of resinous pine and grapefruit rinds. Maybe even some fruitness from the hops. The malts similiar to a liquid smoke or an ashen flavor. This beer smells simliar to how it tastes, but it tastes better than it smells.
Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer with almost moderate carbonation levels. The beer feels a little thin and watery. I like it when a black IPA has a creamy mouthfeel. This beer doesnt quite have that going for it.
Overall: Nice black black ale or black IPA whatever you want to call it! Nothing that stands out as unique, but this style seems to be a beer style that once you have tried one the rest taste the same. This reminds me of a less complex version of New Glarus Black Top; which to this point is the best example of this beer style that I have drank so far. A creamier mouthfeel would really do alot for this beer. I guess that I expected a little bit more from this beer with the Grassroots brand attached to this collaboration beer. This is my first Amager Bryghus brew that I have had, maybe Amager Bryghus had more of an influence on this beer than Grassroots did.

A - A beautiful black colored beer with a nice beige head that quickly disappears. If the beer is hold against the light it gives away its deep red color.
S - A nice smell of beer motor oil, heavy roasted malts, a thick sweet scent and the distant smell of piny hops, lemon and oranges.
T - The beer is quite dry in taste. The hop is prominent and gives a bitter taste what makes it also fresh. The taste is complex and it is definitely worth a compliment. Flavors of lemon and orange are pretty subtle present.
M - Thinner in body than the scent suggests. The carbonation is low and fits perfectly with the beer. The bitter aftertaste is long smoldering.
O - The beer drinks away easily but is much too bitter. Some more sweetness and a ticker body would have helped the beer. And some maturing in oak casks would have been tremendous.

Stout-like head from a turbulent pour. Tan head, tons of downward movement, huge in size. Brew is absolutely black as night and opaque to boot. Head retention is very solid. Lacing is thick and fluffy.
Aroma matches what I've come to expect from a black IPA: citrus and pine, balanced against cocoa. Strong, stale malty aroma, as well.
Flavor follows the nose, with big cocoa notes hitting first (and last), and in between, soft pine and citrus coming through. Some dry earthy hoppiness in there, as well.
Mouthfeel is medium; thickly flavorful, but on the slightly thin side. Comes in between a stout and an IPA.
This could easily pass for a hoppy stout a la Storm King or Founders Imperial Stout. In fact, I'm not sure it wouldn't be better served as such; the hoppiness is very present, but the malts are front and center.
IMO, that's the difference between a high IBU stout and a black IPA: what is front and center? In this case, I'd argue it's the malts, not the hops. Either way, it's a very tasty brew.

500 mL bottle poured into a snifter.
Appearance - Nearly black. Nice khaki head. Thick collar. Leggy on the swirl.
Smell - Bright grapefruit. Roasted malt. Coffee and caramel.
Taste - Lots of grapefruit, again. Roasted malt immediately. Gets very bitter. Coffee and burnt malt bitterness. Grassy hop flavor comes back and almost overpowers the roasted malt, but not quite.
Mouthfeel - Very burnt and bitter. Medium carbonation.
Overall - If you can get past the intense roast, it's really good. But it is really burnt.

A: Pours and dark brown with reddish edges under a half-inch thick off-white head which yields spotty lace.
N: Citrusy hops and dark malts.
T: Roasty, hoppy and malty. Fairly bland.
M: Moderate body and medium carbonation. Semi-dry and bitter roasty finish.
O: A Shawn influenced black ale. Not so much.

Thanks to hopdog for sharing this beer received from grassrootsVT, who was partially responsible for the beer.
Appears a hazy dark mahogany with a small tan head that never really fades away. Tons of scattered lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of cocoa, caramel, raisins, grapes, toasted nuts, bitter chocolate, and cream.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with mildly tart cherries, and gooseberries found in the background.
Mouthfeel is medium-full bodied, creamy, biter, and lip smacking.

Poured vigorously into a lost abbey teku.
A: Pitch black body with a large light brown head that recedes quickly.
S: Citrus and pine followed by potent cocoa. Less hop forward than I would have expected but inviting nonetheless.
T: Light citrusy hops upfront, with bitter chocolate and coffee notes dominating. Assertive bitterness.
M: Light/medium body with an oily, mouth coating texture. Medium carbonation. Very drinkable.
O: Decent example of a black ipa. Dark malt flavors are definitely more prevalent than other examples of the style with hops taking a back seat. Bitterness was a tick high for the amount of hop flavor present.

The beer is black, possibly with a hint of brown, the head rather light, tan. Receding slowly and leaving lots of lacing.
The smell is dark roasted bread, dried fruits, raisins and dates.
Not much sweetness in this, burnt caramel and bread crust, many bitter notes, roasted beans.
Rather high carbonation, a smooth body and a good dry finish.
A bit heavy on the bitter hops, could be balanced with some sweetness. Storing or an accompanying sweetness could and did improve this.
