Collaboration with Grassroots Brewing
At Amager Bryghus, we have always and with great pleasure opened our doors to guest brewers from all around the world. Black Nitro is a collaboration with the American grassroots beer hippie Shaun E. Hill.
For Black Nitro, Shaun dug out a recipe from his early years as a brewer. Dark (or Black or Cascadian) IPA is now a trend in the USA, and this beer was also a hit in Denmark when it was first brewed in 2009. The color is a dark brown towards the black. We used a special technique to avoid the burnt notes that usually come from dark malt. The aroma is a broad spectrum of hops thanks to a big dosage of many American varieties.
A warm thank you to Shaun who has moved on to his own successful brewery in the US. Be well.

A: Pours deep black color with a tan colored head. Good volume on it, retention is alright but not amazing. Lacing is alright too.
S: Smell is pretty light overall. Light coffee, chocolate milk, some light citrus notes.
T: Just like the nose but everything is much stronger than I expected. The coffee and chocolate milk notes are front and center. Then, there is a lot of citrus zest notes with orange zest. The flavors don't blend together very well though. They're all good flavors though.
M: Pretty heavy and a lively carbonation.
O: This is an alright beer. I expected better from it though.

Decanted from a 16.9 oz bottle into a conical pint glass; no production information.
A: Pours a mahogany to black color with a foamy, tan one inch head, but limited Belgian lacing. Mid-glass to top clearing of effervescence with strong head retention, like many nitros.
S: Opens with a citrus to floral aroma, but distinct coffee, toffee, and cane sugar notes evident over time.
T: Very sweet opening, like a milk stout, with a sarsaparilla/sugar cane flavor offset by peppery bitterness.
M: Medium to full bodied; very persistent effervescence.
O: Interesting and enjoyable.

Aroma is dark malts and sugary/citrus/fruit. The flavor is pine needles, citrus/fruit, dark malts and a mix of sugar and spices in the finish. Bought on a five dollar markdown, probably was old, but was pretty good for its age.

poured from a bottle -black with a tan head.
nose is roasty with dark and sweet malts... also some earthy pine coming from the hops. taste is similar, liking how the hops bring a nice bitterness which compliments the malt bill .. only complaint would be that the malts seem like theyre more what you would expect from an imperial IPA than a black IPA. feels light/medium.

Pours deep black with a tall, creamy tan head with good retention and lots of lacing. The nose is mostly IPA with lots of citrus and spicy hops but with some chocolate malt in the background. The taste is a great blend of bold, bitter hops (citrus and lots of American bittering hops) with h some nice roasted grain and dark chocolate. The body is big and round with good carbonation with a long dry finish. A really nice beer.
